I don't apologize for my comments at all. These schools make by money signing up students for lunch programs that they don't need or want. It is a huge waste of money.

My mother would have had a note from the doctor the next day.

Get real, this is Chicago, most kids in public school get free breakfast and lunch. But again, I have to state, the question of a parents' inability to have some basic responsibilities for their children is a separate point from the school MANDATING what a child will eat.

And if you think the fact that both parents have to work and have little time to spare to for their kids is not a real issue, I highly suspect you are not a parent.

I don't think anyone expected you to.It would be completely out of character for you [:)]

I was a parent that worked 60 hours a week to provide for my kids. We also had very busy lives but still had a little time to pack some lunches and get our daughters off to school. Both working and not enough time to make lunch ? Not in our house.

She would much rather starve all day than eat food she doesn't like.

From what the article said, that is exactly what is happening. So not only do the parents have to pay for the lunch, but their kid isn't getting anything. So the kids comes home from school starving and fills up on junk so he isn't hungry when dinner is ready. I guess knowing anything about kids isn't a requirement to work at that school.

This.
As a child, I absolutely would not eat most of the 'food' served in the cafeteria at school. On the (rare) days when I had to buy my lunch, it was largely a waste of money because most of it wound up in the trash. I can also say from personal experience that kids who don't eat lunch aren't paying much attention in their afternoon classes, as being hungry isn't really conducive to concentrating on a lesson.

While I'm all for providing healthy meals in the school's breakfast/lunch program, what good does 'healthy' do if the food tastes so nasty that the kids won't eat it? Seriously, did anyone look at the pic of that 'enchilada'? *shudder*

I'm also fairly certain that my parents would have had an absolute shit fit if a school tried to tell them that us kids could not bring our own lunches, let alone that they had to pay for school lunches that would inevitably wind up in the trash. To their way of thinking, parents are responsible for their children, and that includes what said children are and are not allowed to eat. The fact that some parents seem willing to abdicate that responsibility to the school should not give the school the right to decide for all parents what is best for their children.

Funny thing is I just read the same story...I'm thinking if I had clipped some quotes out of it they would have been different ones.
So the Principal has not been able to line up 100 % agreement on her plan....does that surprise you....does that in any way excuse servant for trying to raise the specter of children unnecessarily feeding at the public trough....yes his words,I didn't bother to do the whole quotey thing because what the fuck they are on page 2 of this thread.
Let the parents and the principal in conjunction with the school district trash this out...servant tried to use this story to indict free lunches in their entirety....going so far as to complain that one district in his area was now....*gasp* also serving the children breakfast, servant voiced his fear that dinner was next.
So if you found some of my responses to him a little harsh.....sorry he has only himself to blame. His idiocy turned this into a larger debate involving budgets and deficits...and children stealing his tax money.

He brought up an issue that he feels is important. It's not up to me to decide if it worthy of being on a cm thread. Having personally met several parents who spent all their money on drugs and then sent their kids to school for a free breakfast, I can almost understand it. Though I don't think it is as widespread as he is claiming and I don't think it is something we should pursue. The whole point of the program is to feed kids, who would otherwise not have a decent meal. It's inhumane to starve a child in order to teach the parents responsibility and my guess is they would still spend the money on drugs and the kids would just go hungry.

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 7:23:11 PM)

Wyldhrt, It's a good thing that you are not in the school that the OP's thread mentions. You would be forced to eat what the government wants to feed you.

Not bloody likely, servantforuse. As a child, I had a rather.... err... technicolor gastric reaction to being forced to eat certain things. I don't think that would go over too well in the school caf.

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 7:36:53 PM)

That won't matter to the feds. Rules are rules, and federal money for school systems are all that matters.

Don't preach to me, I made my kids babyfood.

But, lets face it, not all parents do. Some parents are less than ideal. It is the way of the world, this thread won't change that one iota.

And in a population the size of Chicago, you will find all kinds of drug doing (or just plain ignorant)  people who don't care what their kids eat. But you don't change that by rules, you change it by education.

Oh Shesh, I think I said that already.

One) it is not the gov'tit is the school and the school district .
Two )Adults coming here and telling horror stories about their own memories of school lunches is totally besides the point. We are talking about the here and now....nutrition and the value of healthy eating are given far more weight than they were in years past.
I ,myself still can not eat hospital food, something about institutional cooking just turns my stomach, perhaps it is the memory of what they would serve in my own school. But I have choices...for most of the kids that these programs reach.....these are the only nutritionally rich meals they eat in a given day.
Maybe this principal is over reaching, hell perhaps there is even a profit margin involved...though I tend to doubt that....the fact of the matter, the shame of it all is ,that these programs are necessary....too many parents are overwhelmed, too many parents are children themselves....and yes too many are just damm irresponsible.
None of which alters the fact that there are hungry children in this country....and that these programs strive to alleviate that problem.
With that in mind, and simply that...how many of us would now like to move the conversation to servants personal choice,,,,,that of tax burden [8|]

How is this story about the feds?

pahunkboy -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 7:43:11 PM)

FR-  this is centralized control.   Bummer.

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 7:43:27 PM)

Because servant needs it to be.The Fed is the one big boogie man under which all problems can be laid/blamed.....or at least for some folks it is.

FR

I was quite capable of putting my own lunch together in first grade. Assuming, of course, there was some food in the house to do it with. That was not always a safe assumption.

Now this school has an issue. "Thou shalt only eat and drink what we approve of," is nanny-state totalitarianism. Fuck that, fuck them.

On the larger issue, it is right and proper that a nation such as ours should have a safety net. School lunches are a fine example. If there is corruption (and in Chicago, when isn't there?) then deal with that too.

Indeed, no point helping kids eat some decent food, when we can spend more on nuclear missiles and stuff.

Hey one trick pony

Tell me... what do nuclear missiles have to do with now allowing parents decide what they will let their kids eat and not eat?
