OK folks, lets at least attempt to keep this thread on topic and not turn it into yet another partisan pissing match.
Thank you.

I wonder what could possibly make someone so callous.

Yeah. Being honest enough to face up to the fact that some parents are too lazy to make a lunch for the young'uns, or would rather buy drugs than food.

How dare he! Only the politically correct ugly realities should have any place in an emotion based discussion of vital government services!

Once again, why exactly should the children suffer because their parents are worthless?

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 8:35:40 PM)

This program is for ALL kids, not only for those who can't afford it. The only kids that will suffer are the ones that are not allowed to bring a lunch that their parents gave them. These parents are not smart enough to feed their kids.

But when would that segment of the population have learned it, Serv? It's a multi-generational condition. It needs to be discussed, not denied, but it is not the end of the story.

Are you saying it not right and proper that a country such as ours should put out a safety net? Not should it be a comfy hammock instead mind you, but should there be one at all? If so, then what have we got that is more appropriate than providing a food option in the schools?

One) it is not the gov'tit is the school and the school district .

Agreed.
quote:

Two )Adults coming here and telling horror stories about their own memories of school lunches is totally besides the point. We are talking about the here and now....nutrition and the value of healthy eating are given far more weight than they were in years past.

I disagree. Per the article, at least some of the kids forced to eat this 'healthy' food find it completely repellent and throw most of it away. Those of us who remember doing the same thing have experience with the way it affects a school child when lunch, no matter how healthy or unhealthy, winds up in the trash bin instead of the child.
quote:

But I have choices...for most of the kids that these programs reach.....these are the only nutritionally rich meals they eat in a given day.

Most? Is there data available on that? It  would be interesting to know how many kids need this program vs how many are forced into it by the school policy.
quote:

Maybe this principal is over reaching, hell perhaps there is even a profit margin involved...though I tend to doubt that....the fact of the matter, the shame of it all is ,that these programs are necessary....too many parents are overwhelmed, too many parents are children themselves....and yes too many are just damm irresponsible.

Yes, but this policy takes responsibility away from the parents, and punishes the children of responsible parents, does it not? In fact, parents whose children do not qualify for free or reduced cost lunches are forced to pay for school lunches that their children may not even eat. Result? A nice fat bill for the parents ($40-$50 per month) and a hungry kid. Not really stellar in my book.
quote:

None of which alters the fact that there are hungry children in this country....and that these programs strive to alleviate that problem.

The programs existing are not the issue. The issues are parents being told that they have no say in what their children eat at school and some being forced to pay for food that is wasted because the kids won't eat it.

C'mon, Mike, how would you as a (justifiably proud) Dad have reacted if your son's school had such a policy and you found out that the lunches you were paying for were winding up in the trash and your son was going hungry rather than eat them?

If this principal is really that concerned about healthy eating and confident in the quality of the food being served, I think that she should not only eat the cafeteria food herself, every day, but the rest of the staff should be required to do so as well. Having read some of the comments, I noticed one from a student at the school in question stating that the staff often eats McDonalds in the teachers' lounge rather than eating the excellent food served in the cafeteria.
Hypocrisy is fun!

Hillwilliam -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 9:59:23 PM)

I was a teacher for 3 years. One thing that pissed Me off was the expectations that the school would "raise your children for you because you were too fucking lazy".

Now, I see that the school has decided that parents (even the ones with their shit together) are not capable of deciding what junior will have for lunch.

DAYUMMMMMMMMMMMMM

If I had a kid in school, there would be 3 possibilities.

1. Rescind the rule.

2. That dipshit principal's (wanna bet he or she has never had a kid) head on a spike.

3. Transfer.

Walk through any public school in a rich or poor district. These kids all have cells. In Milwaukee they use them to get reinforcements when there is a fight in the school.

I love watching obese adults fighting over the idea that children may not be eating healthy meals.

Laughable.

Are there some kids that need a school lunch, certainly. Are there just as many just feeding off the taxpayer trough, literally, yes there are. Most of these parents are just to damn lazy to fix the kids a lunch.

And you know this how?

BTW, FDD, Kindles are nothing like iPads.  Trust me, I have a Kindle.

The newer generations of Kindles will be fully internet capable, withith printer options and eventually calling/video ones too. I am not talking about operational systems, I am talking about function. but that's another thread.

outhere69 -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/12/2011 10:11:57 AM)

That's way, way off in the future.  They'd also need a large color touchscreen.

But!  I loves the battery life of a Kindle.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/12/2011 1:15:15 PM)

What's way off in the future? Five Years? Maybe Three?

It's likely a child born in 2011 will spend their twelve years of primary and secondary education without textbooks as we know them today.

I-Pads, Kindles, Nooks and others will compete for that business

Indeed, no point helping kids eat some decent food, when we can spend more on nuclear missiles and stuff.

Hey one trick pony

Tell me... what do nuclear missiles have to do with now allowing parents decide what they will let their kids eat and not eat?

And like a missile, any pertinent points zoom right over your head.  I could explain it (Slowly) to you while you grab another burger, if you wish.

4. How do children qualify for free and reduced price meals?
Any child at a participating school may purchase a meal through the National School Lunch Program. Children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals. Those with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible for reduced‐price meals, for which students can be charged no more than 40 cents. (For the period July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2011, 130 percent of the poverty level is $28,665 for a family of four; 185 percent is $40,793.)

Might I be allowed to jump in here....
There are those amongst us who wonder why others who constantly carp about expenditures of tax dollars never, ever do so when the subject is sexy things that go bang.
That the target of belt tightening is restricted solely to "entitlement" programs, always excluding the defense budget.A budget that some feel should be sufficient to protect us should all the other nations of the world suddenly turn on us [:)]
Of course I'm just guessing as to what Polite was getting at....but I think it's a pretty good guess [:)]

So you dont think the idea of how we spend taxes should be related ? I`d rather that we spent more on health and education than on an inflated war machine, thats for sure.

I have to say Polite...that I did a much better job of explaining what you were thinking than you did.
And I used more words,in some case biggerer words too.[:D]

Back when I was a kid the rich kids had 2 sets of books-  one for school one at home.    Of course they also got rides to school in new Cadillacs and Lincolns-  and when they hit a certain age-  daddy would buy them  a sports car-- and those hard to get parking spaces would somehow get reserved parking too.

PS-  I had 1 set of books....
