Sanity -> EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 3:52:14 AM)

I am posting this in mind of the way so many Leftists on these discussion boards repeatedly deny that the president has anything to do with Americas ability to obtain cheap, plentiful fuel.

Beside Americas energy independence, also at stake are the trade imbalance as well as the Alaskan economy.

Shell Oil Company has announced it must scrap efforts to drill for oil this summer in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coast of Alaska. The decision comes following a ruling by the EPA’s Environmental Appeals Board to withhold critical air permits. The move has angered some in Congress and triggered a flurry of legislation aimed at stripping the EPA of its oil drilling oversight.

Shell has spent five years and nearly $4 billion dollars on plans to explore for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The leases alone cost $2.2 billion. Shell Vice President Pete Slaiby says obtaining similar air permits for a drilling operation in the Gulf of Mexico would take about 45 days. He’s especially frustrated over the appeal board’s suggestion that the Arctic drill would somehow be hazardous for the people who live in the area. “We think the issues were really not major,” Slaiby said, “and clearly not impactful for the communities we work in.”

The closest village to where Shell proposed to drill is Kaktovik, Alaska. It is one of the most remote places in the United States. According to the latest census, the population is 245 and nearly all of the residents are Alaska natives. The village, which is 1 square mile, sits right along the shores of the Beaufort Sea, 70 miles away from the proposed off-shore drill site. The EPA’s appeals board ruled that Shell had not taken into consideration emissions from an ice-breaking vessel when calculating overall greenhouse gas emissions from the project. Environmental groups were thrilled by the ruling.

“What the modeling showed was in communities like Kaktovik, Shell’s drilling would increase air pollution levels close to air quality standards,” said Eric Grafe, Earthjustice’s lead attorney on the case. Earthjustice was joined by Center for Biological Diversity and the Alaska Wilderness League in challenging the air permits.

At stake is an estimated 27 billion barrels of oil.

They'll "find a way" to fix that little problem once they get you used to paying six bucks a gallon for gasoline.

T^T

Right - "they" will vote the radical environmentalists out of office. [;)]

Mezrem -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 2:29:27 PM)

Do you really expect him (Obama ) to offer more the lip service about energy independence? Entire segments of our population really believe the EPA is a good thing 100% of the time. That because I run my a/c I'm killing a polar bear... all hope is not lost but this is just another sign that either Obama is telling us lies to try and keep us happy while gas goes to 6$ a gallon or he can't control his appointees. I for one am willing to drill through the head of one of Santa's reindeer if it means energy independence. We keep hearing as well that people all over the country need jobs.. here is an idea... build some new damn refineries and if there is oil some were drill!

We can sit by and let others do it of course and buy oil from them.. we can help other countries build new refineries or build them here. Seems kind of simple to me, but what do I know. I'm a right wing kind of guy and every one knows people like me love dirty air and water.

Ron.

He doesn't want to see any of that.

Wow, Ron.  Thanks for posting that article.  In this particular topic I'm as left as left could be (according to some on the right, I suppose).  I am dead set against drilling in deep water ANYWHERE that can effect American people because those decadently rich oil companies won't spend the R&D to develop a better way.  If its deep water drilling vs $6 a gallon, I'd pay $6 a gallon in a heartbeat.  There are other ways to supplement our energy, but everyone has a negative attitude about how to get there, which means we enslave ourselves to the need for oil.  We enslave ourselves.  But I'll be damned if I cave in to the fear-mongering, depressing, negative right.  The real politicians will have to change that if they so deem it fit.  The ones who only bitch and moan on here....well, they're just people who bitch and moan here.

jlf1961 -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 4:14:21 PM)

Considering that there are two schools of though about how much oil is under the United States, meaning that there may or may not be enough oil to make us independent. There are some known oil deposits that we simply do not have the technology to drill into.

Since the Ixtoc I was an exploratory oil well being drilled by the semi-submersible drilling rig Sedco 135-F in the Bay of Campeche of the Gulf of Mexico, the technology on how to deal with SHALLOW well blow outs has not advanced, and they tried the same ideas on the recent spill in the Gulf and all of those failed.

Why drill in water where we have no clue as to how to treat a blow out. That is irresponsible at best, criminally negligent at worst.

You want to talk hysterical, just post more press releases from Democrats as if theyre news articles [:D]

The minute you see the word "Big Oil" you know its a partisan hit piece, and nothing to be taken seriously

Legislation introduced in the Senate is a hit piece.  You've gone even further over the edge than you used to be the last few days.

I am sure you have a few facts to bring to the table to dispute what is in the legislation?

Having grown up right in the middle of the oil patch, this crap has been going on for ages.

Sanity -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 4:40:45 PM)

No one on the left cares about Americas decay and our dependence on foreign oil is a huge part of that, and its preposterous for you to say the oil companies havent spent  money on R&D, theyve spent billions and theyre absolutely the best in the world

A press release from a Democrat demagoging against "big oil" is absolutely a partisan hit piece [:D]

The Dems are spinning fast and furious because they know these high oil prices may well crash the economy, just as they also know that they fully deserve all the credit if and when that happens

As things stand the high gas prices are hurting people badly and its Democrats who dont care, its Democrats who are railing against and are handicapping the businesses whose very business it is to deliver the goods

Dems want to have it both ways, theyre going to save the planet, their Earth Goddess Gaia by making the fuel we need inaccessible for the poor but theyre not to blame for carbon fuels becoming more and more inaccessible as planned thus driving the price of food and everything else up, they really think people are that stupid

hardcybermaster -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 4:51:55 PM)

the real problem is population. there are 3 times as many people living on the planet now than there was 50 years ago and the number is rising, and rising.....and rising.
The western/developed world demands a huge percentage of the world's resources and there will not be enough to go round soon.It really doesn't matter how much oil you get or from where as there won't be enough of everything we view as important to go round before long and then things will really start to get interesting

flcouple2009 -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 4:54:46 PM)

Can we get back to the question.  You do have some evidence that they just made up the things in the legislation?

You seem to fail at grasping the difference between a press release and announcing a bill.  What are you suggesting the 2 Senators were just sitting around smoking a bong and hit upon this idea they made up?

There are blocks in the gulf that have been leased for years and never drilled.

There are vast oil, coal and natural gas reserves throughout North America, and we can burn them cleaner and safer than practically anyone, especially China. The only way we can suffer any kind of hardship is if the radical environmentalists hold sway over all the bureaucracies which are charged with running our lives, and which are fast becoming political footballs as opposed to what we were told they would be

vast does not mean infinite and being better than someone else at using them is not a good reason to waste them

After this fiasco with BP? And that isnt gonna go away any time soon since BP is suing to recover their losses, its gonna be in the media for years. I cant see any offshore oil drilling happening for a very long, long, long time... no politician will risk it.

Sanity -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 5:12:17 PM)

If its generating power that families need to live and move around...  that farmers need to grow food, and that businesses need to do the things they do... then its not being wasted.

No one purposely wastes energy

flcouple2009 -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 5:15:27 PM)

tj,

They have already issued permits.  All that took was the filing of an actual working plan for disaster response.

Unfortunately no such plan ever existed before the BP spill.

hardcybermaster -> RE: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans (4/26/2011 5:16:36 PM)

have you ever been in a car during rush hour?
have you ever....enter a millions things here that people do that wastes resources.....
