Are you aware of all of the people who noticed he was sick and did nothing, or could do nothing? His teachers, the dean at his college, his friends, etc etc etc...

Locking people up in prison where they become victimized is not a good answer. Our jails and prisons are filled with the nonviolent mentally ill.
Jailing the mentally ill search on google

I am not saying that people who are a danger to themselves or others should be freed. I am saying that imprisoning such people is inhumane. It is cruel. I am saying that our mental health system in this country SUCKS. I am saying that many of these sorts of things could be avoided if we treated mental illness differently

Yeah, just treat human beings like rabid dogs[8|]

I don't think it is appropriate to equate the people we execute for committing such heinous crimes, with animals, Julia. It's important to squarely face that they are humans.

juliaoceania -> RE: Judge: Ariz. shooting suspect mentally incompetent (5/25/2011 9:45:06 PM)

Only you could think executing people that are mentally ill because they are mentally ill is okay....well, I suppose the Nazis thought it was cool too.

TheHeretic -> RE: Judge: Ariz. shooting suspect mentally incompetent (5/25/2011 9:51:55 PM)

So straight from the strawman to the nazi comparison, huh, Julia?

Such a fine example of the modern model liberal, aren't you? [8|]

juliaoceania -> RE: Judge: Ariz. shooting suspect mentally incompetent (5/25/2011 9:56:35 PM)

Well, you are the one that suggested executing people who do violent things because they are not aware of what they are doing. It does not mitigate their guilt... put them out of their misery like a horse with a broken leg. I think those arguments were made by Nazis... they were doing the mentally ill and the mentally challenged a favor, at least that was the propaganda...

Your statement really dovetailed nicely... congratulations!

So your response to being called on your "put them down like animals" strawman, and calling nazi, is to rephrase the strawman, and compare me to a nazi again.

So typical. So childish.

How did this guy get so well armed?

Marini -> RE: Judge: Ariz. shooting suspect mentally incompetent (5/25/2011 10:14:25 PM)

How many people think that he really is mentally ill?

Aren't there levels of mental illness?

I bet 20% of most people walking this earth have some form of "mental illness", mental disturbance, severe untreated depression, manic/depression, "serious issues", etc.

Dude wasn't too mentally ill to attend school, obtain weapons, and plan and than plot out what he was going to do was he?

Mentally ill or evil?

CNN news shooter evil or mentally ill?

Did you know he was constantly disruptive in class? He was so disruptive that his teacher reported it to administration because he was noticeably a disturbed person. His friends say that he withdrew from them and became weirder and weirder.

Schizophrenia often does not exhibit itself until the late teens, early 20s. That is when my brother became mentally ill. He used to be normal. I cannot begin to tell you how hard it is to have someone you love diagnosed with this problem. It feels like they died because they are not the person you knew.

Great point!
How many of us know several people that could probably be considered mentally ill?

I have always said, many people won't be treated or get the help they need, until they go "off" or do something terrible.

How many people in prison, ARE mentally ill?
I would think MANY people that have been put to death are mentally ill, wouldn't you?

Number of mentally ill in prisons has quadrupled

........starts looking at screen names on the message boards.....

Most mentally ill people are convinced they are completely sane...

See, now here we are in complete accord, Julia. But since you'd rather distort what I say, and toss slander, it's a bit late now.

I am not sure how I feel about the Arizona shooting suspect.
I am not saying I am in favor of jailing or putting to death those that are mentally ill, but
if almost 40% of those in jail are mentally ill, why should he not go to jail?

Why should he be able to plead "mental" illness and so many others have that are also "mentally ill" have to serve life sentences in prison and/or get the death penalty.

What is the number of people that have been given the death penalty that I am sure, would be considered mentally ill?

I am really not sure about this at all, if he doesn't belong in jail and belongs in a psychiatric hospital, why should the millions of other people in JAIL not be released and let them all go to psychiatric hospitals?

I bet you damn skippy, we could all go to the nearest prison, and find 100 people at least as crazy as this dude, what about them?

The system is many different things, but most can agree, it is rarely ever FAIR.

juliaoceania -> RE: Judge: Ariz. shooting suspect mentally incompetent (5/25/2011 10:37:43 PM)

I think that your post is an example of how our system is completely broken... we use jails as mental wards so we do not have to deal with crazy people. Most of those people didn't do anything all that wrong (the ones in jail at least)

I saw this documentary about treating mentally ill in prison.. medicating these people in jail. It was unreal the amount of psychotropic medication they are handing out. They are not really equipped to deal with it.

Yes Marini, there are levels. And many have attempted to use the "Im insane" excuse to get out of going to prison.

Time will tell with Laughner. Its easier to fool a few local Drs then it is to fool a hospital designed to care for these types of patients.

He was barking when in court. Well, when he is in court ordered psychiatric care, its harder to keep up any facade. Not saying he is, just that the possibility is there.
