ORIGINAL: xssve We took an informal poll in here once and intuitive types (who tend to be introverted), appeared way overrepresented in here compared to the general population (I''m an INFJ) - at least in the sample who responded to the poll, and it was subs as well as dom's. Part of it is, Americans don't really respect intelligence, and flaunting it generlaly gets you nowhere - the opposite assumption is often made, if you're intelligent, you're a "wimp", and athletic ability/physical strength/beauty is much more likley to be openly admired and rewarded. I'm very competitive intellectually, which put's a lot of people off, like Woody Allen said, intellectuals eat their dead - but I try not to go around lording it over others, that would just be anti-social - if you challenge me however, you better bring a lunch, I've done the homework. Having said that however, admitting ignorance is often an excellent indicator of intelligence, only a fool will continue to argue about something they clearly know nothing about. Intelligence itself isn't so much about what you already know, it's more about having the ability to keep learning - and you can't learn nothin' if you think you know it all already. And informal poll is just that, informal. It relys on people to state what they think they are, rather than what they likely are. I would be very interested to know where you get the impression that the introverts are more often "intuitive" than the extroverts. In my experience, I have found that intuitiveness is not more radically obvious in either the introverts or the extroverts. I also disagree that Americans have no respect for intelligence. Yes, we do tend to be a more visually stimulated type of group, both men and women. Beauty, athleticism is definately noticed, but I don't believe that intelligence goes unrewarded or doesn't get noticed. It's like listening to the news. You rarely hear reports about good things people do, but the news is full of all the horrible things people do to each other. Not really sure what you mean by being competitive intellectually. Appearing on Jeopardy maybe? Or always looking to get into discussions with people where you can show your intelligence. However, kind of seems like being "competitive intellectually" is actually looking for opportunities to "lord it over others." Whatever floats your boat. As for fools who will continue to argue even when they are wrong and proven to be so....have you looked around these boards? Seems to happen quite often. I find the first thing I do is look to see if English is not the person's first language, as that will sometimes mix up what they say. However, there are some here who profess to be expertly knowledgeable about so many things, I find it entertaining.
