hey what now???

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/06/17/romney-team-explains-refusal-to-sign-anti-abortion-pledge/

New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) – Mitt Romney's presidential campaign is explaining his decision not to sign a tough anti-abortion pledge supported by most of the candidates in the Republican field.

The anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List announced Friday that Republican candidates Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul have signed its Pro-Life Leadership Presidential Pledge.

The group, though, made a point of highlighting Romney’s refusal to sign the pledge.

The pledge would require the candidates, if elected, to "permanently end all taxpayer funding of abortion," defund Planned Parenthood, and appoint abortion opponents to the federal bench and Cabinet positions.

Romney’s campaign re-affirmed his opposition to abortion rights and called the pledge “well-intentioned.”

But Gail Gitcho, a spokeswoman for the former Massachusetts governor, said the document has “some potentially unforeseen consequences and he does not feel he could in good conscience sign it.”

“The pledge calls for legislation to strip taxpayer funding from thousands of health care facilities, including VA hospitals around the country, and strictly limits the choices a President would have to appoint federal officials,” Gitcho told CNN in an email.

She added, “Mitt Romney will appoint judges who will faithfully interpret the constitution and not legislate from the bench.”

“The bottom line is that Governor Romney is firmly pro-life,” Gitcho said.

The Reps were hijacked long ago by extreme christians, and the anti-abortion part of the platform was inserted because of them. The faster any political group can distance themselves from religious zealots, the better off they will be.

As far as this specific action by Romney, I would have to look at various factors of how it may help him become more electable, rather than it just being good ethics. Anyone that is a career politician, does not have good ethics.

hey what now???

Shit and mirrors...

"Mitt Romney supports the Pence amendment," spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom told the National Review Monday. It makes Romney the ninth rumored 2012 contender to back the proposal by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) to eliminate all Title X grants for the health care provider, a hot topic in the budget negotiations that the two parties have four days left to strike.

In supporting the effort, Romney joins fellow 2012 Republican hopefuls, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and radio host Herman Cain.

One of the reasons Im not buying it Kirata, because of his previous stance, his appearance on the debate earlier this week, etc etc, but I just read it on CNN and thought I would offer it up for discussion. That you two gents have had pretty much the same doubt as I, is more than I need:)

Lucy, I keep meaning to ask, but then forget, but this time I remembered:

Have you got the phone number of the girl whose ass is in your pic?

Only I've considered it carefully, and I think I want to marry her :)

His personal views on abortion notwithstanding, my understanding of his political position (open to correction) is that the federal government has no business involving itself in the matter at all.

If he signed that pledge with all that is entailed it would be complete opposite of my thoughts on what he stood for....I wonder if the old boy is becoming apolitical whore like the rest?

It is a very calculated position.....the downside is the issue is one of importance during the primaries.....yet by not stooping to sign it he has made himself that much more electable in the general.
Those who have signed it have announced to intelligent Republicans that they have no chance to win in a general against Obama.....this hard right pledge will be a millstone around any candidates neck come the election.Romney is not an idiot...congratulations Republican......you just might have someone who can make a good show of it.

Yeah, I was disappointed too. I think Romney's decision will be the one that plays best in the long run.

A question ...or two.How could the American voter elect a candidate who had already entered into a fealty pact with a special interest group ?
How could such a President-elect take the inauguration oath while already bound by a previous oath?
One would think the oath of office supersedes ...but can a man serve two masters ?

Ok.

Orion, I have much respect for you as a poster, but this one threw me a bit for a loop.

Why is it "extreme" and "religious zealotry" to oppose abortion?
