It's well worth it, I think, as you can tell. I can taste a difference in the quality from supermarket. Another plus for me besides being hormone free is that it's local.

We've got a place here called the Common Crow, and it's got great organic milk. Runs about $0.50 a gallon... but it's like the difference between a bud and a good micro brew.

I'm sure you're pleased with the price.

I don't use or buy too much of either, especially milk so that is a moot point.

BUT........how many people that are fickle about their milk and chicken, etc.........are as fickle about the products they buy that have milk and other 'dirty foods' in them...hmmmmmmmmmm.........?

Like........ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!

That always gets me, bread that's made with battery hen eggs.... I don't buy milk anyway due to a slight lactose problem but I only buy bread from a place that only uses free ranged eggs, eggs only from the farmer where I know the chickens do run around and scratch about happily.

What gets me is that people eat too much meat anyway, but they always want more and want it even cheaper, so the best way to raise profits for farmers is to get animals that put on weight quick, which usually means not a lot of exercise, cheap but calorific food, antibiotics regularly (also helps to increase the weight), animals that are raised in unnatural conditions suffer from a lot of stress and illnesses, so they have to get more medication, people consume all of that when they eat the meat and then they wonder that they get sick, who would have thought? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out. Nobody would put bad petrol into an engine and expect it to perform at an optimum and last long, why people eat shit food and expect to stay healthy is beyond me.

I actually caught myself doing a mini-dance in my chair while I was eating a rib-eye the other day.

You dont happen to have a video of that mini-dance, do you?

I grew up on a farm and we did things as naturally as possible & my mother would spoil the cows & critters.
My first boyfriend had it soooo good, my parents would come to visit and bring a whole bunch of home grown food, and lots of amazingly HUGE thick steaks, bacon, ground beef, sausages, etc, since i didnt eat meat my boyfriend got to eat it all.

I don't remember how the food tasted when I was younger. It probably was very similar to the good food I'm eating now. I guess you forget once the good stuff stops at an early age and you get used to the corporate taste.

I think that's why we all were so healthy when we were young because we ate well. Large garden with plenty of fresh veggies and meat. Not that we enjoyed many steak nights!

Having grown up as an AG Geek, I won't knowingly touch milk where the cows were fed hormones. I don't care how many studies the dairy promoters put out there to claim it is safe. The farmers not utilizing the hormone realize it's better for their livestock not to do so.

Ditto for the beef/chicken/etc. I'll pay the extra because I don't choose to put that residue in my body. If I have the freezer space and the cash, I purchase my meat either from a butcher I trust or pay the "live weight" price for a market animal raised by someone I trust then have my portion cut and wrapped to order. I might still get poisoned but at least I know who I was poisoned by.

Anything we didnt grow was rare to get, mandarin oranges were like striking gold when we were lucky enough to get a few at Christmas, and fish and seafood too, rarely got to eat that.

Mmmm, I remember the taste of fresh juicy green peas! Sitting in the garden eating them right there in between the rows... I could spend all day eating peas... and little tiny wild strawberries that grew in the meadows.. very tiny, the size of the end of your little pinky but soooooo good
I cant wait to have a huge garden again!

I buy as much as possible from local vendors because I can visit and or talk to the supplier/producer. They even invite you to come and see their operation.. That seems to be a theme with a few people I've talked with. They come off as proud of their products and methods and are available to show them off. It's nice to see people taking a little pride in what they do, being responsible in their production and quality and also standing readily by their work.

The odd thing is- I live in a farm area.  But it also has a plant for the grocer chain- so I think it goes in the plant- when they process it.  Milk can now keep for it seems like 12 days- instead of 4 days.

Any chance of getting it directly from farmers you trust?

Gosh-  that could be worth looking into.  I was disspointed tho with the farmers market.  I bought some fresh eggs- and they were great- so I went back and bought 4 more dozen- HOWEVER they were nothing like the fresh ones.  I dont really even know if I would like raw milk- tho.

Me too. I really hope I can find some good blueberry patches in Alaska I can share with the bears. I'm sure I'll enjoy making my first blueberry pie from fresh picked berries. If I can learn how to make ice cream from fresh goats milk I'll have something then!

Well, since i dont drink milk/cream, I dont eat ice cream ... but... i do want to learn to make soy yogurt and "ice cream" from organic soy milk, not like the store bought stuff full of additives and "stuff" I cant pronounce.

We never had blueberry bushes, we did find a few saskatoon bushes on the farm tho. I love blueberries too, just as much as peas! I used to go out to the organic U pick farms for those, a certain variety that was big and juicy and lots of flavor! Yup, there will be a big section for those in my garden.
And blackberries and gooseberries (mmmm jam!), and raspberries and elderberries and currants (mmmm more jam!) and... grapes and figs and kiwis and anything else my tummy can think of!

I love blackberries too. During season as kids, me and my brothers/sisters would strip the local bushes bare. Usually to my moms dismay. Our teeth would be stained and our clothes would be covered with juice from head to toe.

We also collected palm berries, grapes (My dad grew the hell out of them for one season and couldn't get them to grow again), mango's and a few other local foods depending on the place we were living.  Including a local honeysuckle plant that was a nice treat on the way to school. Good memories.

Strange that your grapes wouldnt grow again. My mother was in there picking blackberries with a vengence, she was funny to watch when she attacked those bushes. I can still see her in my mind.

My mother would freeze veggies, can fruit and veggies, make jam, pickles, pies from scratch, bread too so i know how to do all that, except for making bread, i am a total failure with yeast. Oh well, thats why they invented breadmakers. I have never made beer bread so I would like to try that and see if at least that works for me.

I was 7 at the time and he didn't know so I surely didn't know. All I remember is we only got one good year out of the plant. If I'm not mistaken grapes are finicky anyway.

Here's a recipe for soda bread. Pretty good stuff and easy to make.

"I buy whole raw milk from a farmer that hits the local farmers markets. I pay $4.00 for a half gal. and in the winter I buy it (raw whole milk) at my local health store/co-op for about the same price. "

That is illegal here, and for sure in at least ten states. No shit.

T^T

Yes it is, hence my problem in buying unpasterized milk to make yogurt or cheese.

In so many areas, it is against the law to buy what is healthy for you.

Hellooooo people wake the fuck up. We have to, as a group, say no to that crap.

Please? Just say no to processed food.

I typically don't drink milk anymore, but when I do, it's always organic, hormone-free.  One of my cousins used to suffer from migraines due to dairy products. As soon as she switched to organic, hormone-free, the migraines stopped.

I buy organic, cage-free eggs, and have no problem paying more.

Same with chicken.

I rarely buy beef, and I've never tried grass fed, although my sister says that's the only way to go. I'll have to try it.

In my severely limited budget days, I just bought whatever was cheapest, and I hated it.  It's been nice being able to go back to mostly organic food.  As for the question of shelling out $$ for the good stuff, only to eat the crappy stuff in other prepared foods, I can only say I do what I can (although I don't eat ice cream anymore).  At least some support to the organic industry is better than none, and gradually I'd like to make my way back to only whole, organic foods.

The Mister, on the other hand - whoa boy.  He's a work in progress.

As much as possible, I make my own stuff. So I don't have to worry too much about ingredients. I can't do that all the time, even I get tired of cooking, but I think having your radar set on what is bad for you is going to improve what you eat.

You don't have to be a great cook...just watch.

Remember why Pasteur is a hero: say no to thousands of deaths by tuberculosis and other diseases, and say no to unpasteurised milk.
Most 'green' products are just a gullibility tax: remember, hormones used on cattles can't affect humans; imagine a large square block [bovine growth hormone] trying to get into a small round hole [human growth hormone receptor]: literally impossible.
So if you like the taste of Jersey milk better than Holstein [small producer vs large producer], fine, and by the way, I agree. But there is no taste variation with 'hormone' milk.
