I agree completely that things should be better. I think it would take a lot of changes in this country, on an individual, personal level from each citizen, to say that things could be better. We wouldn't have these sorts of farcical elections if the majority of people just rolled their eyes and shut the tv off when some story about terror mosques or how much Sarah Palin's shoes cost came on. Have a look at this thread. With a democracy like this, what reasonable or intelligent person would even want to run? Sure the thread's just in good fun, but there's no clever wit about a particular candidate's policy....just who sucks, who's dumb, who's "ruining the country," who's really to "blame" etc. Half the time reading this forum is like listening to Beavis and Butthead take over the debate team. Heh heh, your candidate sucks. Shut up dill weed, your candidate is like, ruining America and stuff. So no, I don't think things could be better...you can find a lot of ways to cook Spam but you're not going to turn it into filet mignon. I'd argue that things ARE better---complaining is an American cottage industry. When things suck, there's no individual responsibility. Nothing improves because it's "their" fault. But things DON'T suck. We live amid plenty...as my students and clients learn. But to share in it, you have to look at it. Many just don't want to do that. Being happy is too great a price. Human nature, perhaps. But it just doesn't have to be that way.
