All of this is academic, because there will be big changes after the 2012 elections.

Quite, but that is part of the problem. America has huge debts,no one can argue that but the things that interests polititions most is getting re-elected.So nothing will happen and the situation will get worse,no president is going to raise taxes near an election as it's political suicide.
Over here Gordon Brown knew we were in deep shit but didn't do a damn thing because he wanted another term and now we are in even deeper shit. The same thing is going to happen to you

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL holy shit!!!  Great post.  Yes, it is a country about to explode, no doubt about it.  Hey...I know...let's raise taxes!!!!  If you look at the box marked "U.S. Total Debt" it equals $176,271.00 per U.S. citizen!  But those poor fuckers that Joether talks about that do not pay a dime in federal income tax...well...they need protection!  Of course, the $176,271.00 takes into account the entire U.S. population where approximately 47% pay no income tax so the real figure for the evil tax payers that should pay more tax is really over $350,000.00 apiece.  Way to go, Joether, good thinking.

Not only that but every election the politicians try to buy votes by spending tax $ they will control once they are elected, thus actually compounding the problem every 4 years by adding to spending & debt as soon as they come into power...

I would support a tax that put a 75% tax on all conspiracy theory followers.

You are making the assumption that conspiracy theory followers actually have something worth taxing!

FR:

I specifically requested the non-US people to reply too.   So dont jump on them.

State sales tax is - varies-  a few states have none.   Many exempt some things or have 2-3 rates.

Coming from a country that levies 20 % value added tax on everything we buy except food and the gas taxation issue is a complete farce, tax upon tax, anyone thinking that VAT is a good idea in my oppinion, has got to be fucking crackers ! I mean, why pay more to get little in return, what is it, you think you pay more tax you will get more in return, get real, it does not happen that way. Indicating you want more taxation is a slippery slope, do not go there, besides I thought the idea of freedom was to pay as little as possible to the mindless faceless bureacrats to fuck up your lives.

well it breaches right to life and enjoy ones own property and the fruits of ones labor.

Taxing labor gives them a license to tax all "ESSENTIAL" items required to live.

really this shit is taxes upon taxes and if you get a refund for paying to many taxes you need to pay taxes on the refund!

Just fucking incredible. Tax is used to subidise just about everything. Roads, railways, transport, polices, NHS services, schools ect ect. One minute you are moaning about services being cut, the next you are complaining about paying for them. How does that work out ?

The roads are full of potholes, the railways expensive, same as the bus service if you can call it that, NHS has long waiting lists and incompetant bureacracy and the schools are turning out what, tell me how the tax I pay is paying for everything as you say, methinks it is diverted elsewhere mostly, the crumbling infrastructure indicates as much, as with these times of austerity, surely the services should be kept up despite the debt problem, as VAT has toss to do with the debt, it's for the infrastructure as you say, therefore it should be in good condition, but it's not, why ?

I will tell you how it works.  Paying workers $35.00 per hour to shovel asphalt is insane.  Are we receiving what we are being taxed for?  No.  We are also being taxed to support an illegal population that is larger than the total population of some countries, is that fair?  No.  We are also being taxed for incursions into countries where we do not have a vital national interest at stake.  Is that fair?  No. We are also being taxed to provide HUD housing, food stamps, utility credits, free bus passes and more for a population in this country that does not work, not even donning uniforms and picking up trash.  Is that fair?  No.  We pay lifetime pensions for people that worked 25 years.  Is that fair?  No. (Debate it all you like but 25 years of service should result in 25 years of pension.  Or perhaps there should be no pensions and only matching 401k's.  It is not my intention to cause this thread to jack knife into this tangent.)

Look...taxation is used to buy votes.  Is that fair?  No.

We pay taxes in a myriad of different ways.  You libs can call for all of the taxation you like but it isn't going to slow down the debt clock that was posted in this thread.  In my little city alone, there are 60 positions that receive full salaries that could be eliminated.  But that won't happen.  Nope...we will all continue to pay taxes to support the fraud, the corruption, the nepotism and to indemnify failure just like we have been doing since FDR was president.  The only difference now is that we ALL know that the United States is on the brink of financial ruin.
