Does it make me sappy that I cry every time that Sam tells Frodo "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!"

I could NEVER get into the LOTR books...

I found Tolkeins writing tedious. I've only seen bits and pieces of the movies (hell, for all I know, it was bits and pieces of only ONE of the movies....)

I was in my mid 30s before I could get at all interested in the Dune books, and lost interest when they started the 'offshoots'.

with todays SFX, I'd love to see at least one or two of the Pern books done in 3D...

Tolkein was at his best as a kids' writer, imo: the style and mannerisms that made The Hobbit work so perfectly aren't anything like as effective on the broader and more adult canvas of LOTR (and don't even get me started on the pissing Silmarillion...)

Also, while he's good on the "Feudalism and Catholicism are great! Industrialisation and the working classes who don't know their place are vile and should be disposed of!" subtexts, his characterisation is woeful. All of the female characters in LOTR are thinner than Callista Flockhart on a crash diet. Fritz Leiber has observed that his biggest problem with Tolkein's trilogy is that its author had no interest in women or the bad guys, which makes the book a bit of a slog for lot of people.

As for "Fantasy films with today's SFX", I'd love to see a decent Fafhrd and Grey Mouser flick (The Swords Of Lankhmar in particular would film up nicely) or a film of Robert Holdstock's wonderful Mythago Wood. I'm hoping this threatened Elric film turns out to be as good as the wonderful film of The Final programme from the '70s, as well.

A Texas thing, actually: Moorcock's been blathering for a while now about having sold the film rights for Elric. It's still in development hell as yet, though.

Moon.. Ithink I have only read one of Moorcocks books (my books are still in boxes, so I am not CERTAIN that he was the author: The Skrayling Tree).

Pam.. love the pic, btw

the TC books lost appeal for me after the 3rd, I think..

too much whining in them (kinda like the twilight books... )

Orson Scott Card has two GREAT series (IMO) that I'd love to see put on film: the Ender series, and the Alvin Maker series...

Ender, especially, would lend itself to 3D

I understand what drivel means. I was feigning horror at your dislike for the Twilight series, and referencing a scene from the movie that is popular among women. It was a somewhat comical (I thought) response to your posting, indirectly aimed at other women who also have an appreciate for that scene in the movie.

The odd thing is I love the books but the movies leaves me somewhat disappointed, I like my vampires dark, moody and sexy (think Mitchell in Being Human) but not sparkly teenage boys.

Saw HP7 on Friday and came out disappointed. The trend of the more recent movies continued where elements of the books plot were simply ignored apparently to make the movie more accessible to the 2 people who were going to see the movie without having already read the book. The fact that one of these elements was the one the book was named for didn't seem to matter. My favorite scene from the book was poorly done and amost seemed forced into the movie (Mrs' Weasley and Bellatrix).

Also the 2d show was sold out so I had to watch it in 3d and there simply wasn't enough 3d effects to make wearing those stupid glasses over my prescription eyeglasses worth while.

As to SF and Fantasy movies I'm looking forward to, I had high hopes for John Carter until I saw the trailer Friday (I should have known Disney would screw it up). Captain America next Friday is a film I've been looking forward to all year.

I'd love to see the Pern novels (DragonQuest would be best) as a movie with good special effects.
