I heard a rumor that she's writing a prequel to the HP series.
That would be great.

Moon.. Ithink I have only read one of Moorcocks books (my books are still in boxes, so I am not CERTAIN that he was the author: The Skrayling Tree).

Pam.. love the pic, btw

I don't think the Skrayling Tree is Moorcock, though I admit that I have no idea who that one's by.
Moorcock's best known for a number of series. The Elric one deals with a stroppy albino with a magic sword, who as well as the worst complexion in fantasy fiction, also has one of the nastiest tempers and least pleasant senses of humour as well.

Given the vampire talk elsewhere in the thread, I've always found the shift from vampirism being something deeply unpleasant to a signifier for pervy sex appeal pathetic, and hysterically funny. I'd much rather read something like Kim Newman's Anno Dracula, Anne Bilsson's Suckers or Richard Matheson's I Am Legend than some heap of arse like Poppy Z Brite's Lost Souls or anything at all by Stephanie "True love waits" Meyer.

It'd be great for her bank balance. Whether it'd be a great book, or just more reheated dumbing downs of the worst bits of Tolkein, E Nesbitt and Neil Gaiman remains to be seen.

True, glittering and sparkling more than an explosion in a sequin factory is kinda scary, but not in a moody, sexy way!

Should anything bite me, suck my blood and make me immortal, I demand that he's dark, sexy and dangerous, not a freaking 70's disco ball!

If your boyfriend is all pouty and sparkly and refuses to have sex with you then he's not a vampire: he's gay.

Dearie me, you'll be making excuses for The Book Of Lost Tales, next.

Go read The Worm Ourobourous by ER Eddisson and some Lord Dunsany and William Morris for examples of people who can actually get away with the sort of overdone high style Tolkein used for the Silmarillion and make it work. The very great William Hope Hodgson used a similar style for his dullest book (The Night Land), and even he couldn't quite make it work...

Given how much the later Potter books improve on the first three, she might have blown her vast fortune on ghostwriters...

You're thinking of the Dragon In The Sword.
Apart from a couple of contemporary set novels where he's doing Angela Carter impersonations (extremely well in the case of Mother London), I don't think there are any of his protagonists who aren't an aspect of the Eternal Champion. Even Jerry Cornelius and Professor Faustaff have that feather in their cap...

I enjoyed the Harry Potter series although the epilogue never happened. There are only three Star Wars movies. Twilight on the other hand tells young girls that they need to be whiny and insecure and a guy will come along and fix them someday.

Anyone here ever read the Wheel of Time books?

Yep. And it seems like I have been reading them forever and forever. LOL

I have not picked up Towers of Midnight, yet. I will likely do that soon.

I bought that for my son, we both have read the series. I was going to reread the entire series before reading the last one, but, alas, it seems like a monumental thing to accomplish... what is it now, book 12 or some such?

I have all the books, as well in English as in Dutch.... :)  and read them 2 times now... and a third time can be also.
Great books are worthwile reading over and over again.

And my imagination is that big, I do not need a movie.

Is that what you got out of the books? I didn't, but I guess then it depends on your perspective and what you want to see, I thought the books were quite well written and the female hero wasn't all that whiny or insecure, in fact she went for what she wants against family and everything... Not quite the damsel in distress in my book.

Now if you want to go for a strong heroine, I suggest you go for Jean M Auel's Earth Children novels, if you don't mind boring, repetitive and tedious writing, really bad poetry camouflaged as "mother song" and a rather unbelievable story line, with dreadful sex scenes and all that...

I agree with LadyC, I didn't get that out of the Twilight books at all. I think at the end Bella turned out to be a very strong woman, not hyperdependent on Edward at all.

Loved the books btw, the one movie I saw not so much.

I love those books too... Got to have the new part also!!
Read them also in Dutch AND English :)

But you are right about Hermione... she is not a whining brat, nor a whining woman.. she is a strong person, who takes the lead when nescessary!!

In a moment of insanity I bought the last one, Land Of Painted Caves, I thought her last few books in the series were (trying to put this politely) incredible, tedious tripe... The last one is almost unbearable, I got it next to the bed and the only thing I can say in its favour is, that it does put me to sleep easily because it's THAT boring.

The odd thing is I love the books but the movies leaves me somewhat disappointed, I like my vampires dark, moody and sexy (think Mitchell in Being Human) but not sparkly teenage boys.

I agree. I read all the books first (very late in the game) one right after another in about a one month span, on the advice of a friend.

I can certainly understand this. But I was actually very, very moved by the first book. I saw so much in how she felt toward him that reflected how deeply I feel about someone. There was a lot I identified with as far as how it feels to be completely overtaken by someone.
