Other than the grievances of her immediate family, I don't see anything 'sad' about this at all. The woman did exactly what she wanted to do, start to finish. The fact that she did not view the world or "deal with" the world in the same way that the rest of us are trained to see it does not mean that she 'could not overcome her struggles,' etc., just that she chose her own way about it.
