So here's a few thoughts. First--telemarketing agencies aren't free, meaning they pay for the lists, pay for the computer/software systems (most of these agencies now run on autodialers), rent for the building and phone lines, and of course....the salaries of the staff who are the voice on the other end. Yet so many of these agencies exist because....it works! People buy their services. If it wasn't successful, these businesses would not continue to fund those expenses. So keep in mind while it annoys you (and for that matter....me) obviously there are people out there buying the goods. Being mean to the telemarketer will not stop the calls. It just demeans the employee, who has no control over who he or she dials. Turnover for telemarketers is probably huge. Yes....you hate them.... they hate it too, I can almost guarantee. My ex-wife did it for a month. She wasn't selling a product, she was actually taking a gallup poll, which was remarkably interesting to her, but she grew tired of the abuse. (political polls are exempt, by the way) So if the "Do Not Call" registry isn't working.... I suggest the following instead of yelling at the employee. 1. Make sure you have a written record of your DNC register...it can take up to a month to take effect. 2. Annoying as it is, keep a detailed log by the phone. Record the date, time and number that called you. Inform the agent you wish to be placed on the DNC list, and ask how long it will take to become effective. Then ask for their operator identification number and the name of their company. They rarely will give you their name--even the first name is often not real. But they all have an operator number to give them their anonymity. IF POSSIBLE, DO NOT DELETE THE NUMBERS FROM CALLER ID. This will help with your case. 3. If the calls continue, ask to be transferred (politely) to a Customer Service manager, explain you've asked to be placed on the DNC list, and if happens again, you can report them to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) there is also a quick complaint link on the DNC website. The fines levied against companies who violate the DNC are quite hefty. Here's some light reading...it's the FTC code on telemarketing. http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus27-complying-telemarketing-sales-rule#DNCprovisions
