I feel sorry for any telemarketer that calls my dads house. He's an old man with 'issues' and he doesn't want to yell at telemarketers or anything like that.. he wants to make friends and I've explained the no call list and he refuses to let me put him on it. He wants those phone calls. Day or night.. holidays, weekends.. he just doesn't care. Those poor guys on the other end of the phone just don't know what they are in for when they get him on the phone. He gets personal with them.. asking about their home life - spouse, kids .. stuff like that. He tells ANYONE who calls about the fact that he's looking for a new house, that he was in the hospital for whatever reason he was last in the hospital for.. he goes into details that would make a zombie blush.

I really do feel sorry for those guys trying to make any sort of buck off him because he can squeeze nickles till they bleed but he really loves to chat it up with anyone on the other end of the line.

Anyone want his number? I'm sure he would love to hear from you!

We have a huge family so there is always someone to talk to him but he's told all his stories to the family (several hundred times!) and random strangers on the phone are fresh meat. At this time, he's not housebound, but I'm probably going to have his drivers license yanked in the very near future so that will be harder for him to get around but we are looking for a live-in nurse for him so he'll still be able to get to his poker tourney's, go grocery shopping and stuff like that. He's to the point where I just don't trust him on the road anymore. He has zero filters and is doing some really stupid shit that's going to land him back in jail if I can't get it curtailed. My brothers are not being very helpful in dealing with all that's going on either so it's pretty much all on me and I'm not going to be around much longer so need to get 'er done as they say.

Mummyman....you'd be surprised how quickly they might respond when you tell them (and again, go with a higher level manager) that you want to cancel due to the calls.  It's what stopped my endless calls from the Baltimore Sun.

Cursing out the voice on the other end of the phone has no impact on the people you've deemed unscrupulous.  Just don't answer the phone, delete the voicemail.  Or take some steps further to try to make it stop.

When you get salesmen/solicitors at your door, do you tell them to fuck off with the same  fierceness or do you just not answer the door?  same concept.

I just laugh when people say if you be nice or have you asked to talk to their manager. Been there and done that. Talked to the manager sent letters and tried other diplomatic approaches. I am actually pretty nice and it takes a lot to get my temper going but they are still calling. I am on the DNC. I have call blocking on most of their numbers. But they rotate to a fresh set numbers every month. You can only block 7 numbers at a time. Oh and they do get upset from time to time. I was joyous when I had a newbie in tears. The chewing out if for my personal satisfaction and to eat up as much as there time as possible so that cannot be bugging someone else.

For the Home salesmen, the distinct sound of a Smith & Wesson 1911 45 ACP loading one in the chamber as I open the door and say what do you want? works extremely well.

When I was a telemarketer I would sometimes get some elderly that wanted to tell me their life stories. Sometimes it was cute and they were funny and it took off the edge from all the rude people and threats that were made on us. Sometimes I would take a few minutes to listen to them and talk to them, at least bring a little laugh to their day and make them feel a little better. Sometimes all they wanted was for someone to hear them.

And then you have some telemarketers who have been extremely nice when they have called me. I had one woman who called me about a subscription to a woman's magazine. When I said I wasn't interested she started cracking jokes about how it was full of helpful advice for getting laid rofl....she was hilarious and we must have had about a 10 minute conversation about sex and men.

Another time I had a man call about a subscription to a newspaper. Before he even tried to pitch me he started out with telling me how lovely my voice was, asked me if I had a boyfriend <at the time I didn't>. I just started laughing and asked me if he had made my day a little cheerier. I admit because he made me laugh that he did and when I said I wasn't interested in the newspaper he just simply said he understood, we joked some more and we hung up.

So no, not all telemarketers are cold and mean and rude. If you're nice to them, they're nice to you. They can tell if you're going to be difficult simply from the tone of your voice when you say "hello"....so try being a little nicer and you may find your calls a little easier.

well, I actually do believe that you are very nice.  and I can't claim that I wouldn't get pissed off too if all else was exhausted.  Do you have one of those news station "consumer on your side" bits?  Sometimes, bad publicity from the press could shame them into stopping.

why do you have to tell them they are an ass? Just hanging up isn't good enough? I truly don't understand why people go out of their way to be rude to those people who are simply doing their jobs.

It's like the guy in the mall who sells from the kiosks who constantly approach you to try out the lotion or perfume or whatever. I say no thanks. They continue to ask me each time I pass. Eventually I don't even say no thanks anymore..I just keep on walking and simply ignore him. Should I yell and scream at him and tell him he's bothering me and he's an idiot? Why? He's doing his job.

And I don't understand why people have to be rude after you've said "not interested." I don't yell, I don't scream. I say pretty much these exact words "I already said no, now you're just being an ass, goodbye" and then hang up. Job or not, there is no need to be pushy. And yes, I will tell the people at kiosks that they are being rude - no yelling, no screaming ... not sure where you got that out of my post. Telling someone that they are being an ass does not require raised voices. However, like so many other things, if no one ever says "you know what, that behavior is not acceptable" then they will just keep on doing it. So I say something.

Edited to add: at no point did I say that I called the person an ass, I said I told them they were being one. There is a difference - the difference between making a judgment about the person, and making a statement about their current behavior. I understand they are doing a job, that they are people - that does not make the behavior some of them exhibit acceptable.

Oooh, edited again because I missed the wording of what you said ...

With the kiosks, I only tell them they are being rude like if they continue to follow me, or yell down the mall at me - I do understand that they don't memorize faces as people walk around, so if they ask me as I go in, and then again as I go out - I don't care. Only if they are being rude do I say anything.

Sometimes you don't even know that they are being rude. My girlfriend and I were shopping at the mall and she was looking for a new cover for her cell phone. We stopped at one of the kiosks and while she was shopping the two guys running the kiosk were complaining to one another in Arabic about how long she was taking. The thing is that she is half Lebanese and understands enough Arabic to get by. Of course, she did not tell me about this until we had left the mall because she knows I would have started an international incident right then and there and she didn't have bail money. Ignorant motherfuckers.

Burying it is a better idea. Bodies start to smell after a while...not that I would know that of course.

3.  Politely and quickly say you are not interested.

The only thing that gets me peeved is having to repeat the above. And then being harangued with "why, what's stopping you?" I hate hanging up on people, but really do not like arguing about why I do not want the insurance/new gas company/credit card. I know they're only doing their job but having to say no repeatedly is taking the piss.

The most recent call from a telemarketer was offering details on a low interest loan, I was looking so thought 'yeah, why not'.
Then he passed me onto a debt management agency with the instructions "Tell them you're struggling to meet your debts". Pissed me off no end, told the debt management company to lodge an official complaint with the telemarketers.

I took a job as a telemarketer, and not because I couldn't find any other job either. I took it because the job promised 13 dollars an hour, and a 1k bonous once you completed training. Turns out they misrepresented themselves, but I'd happily be a telemarketer again, if the pay was that high with a great bonus and not mis represented.

Or you could do what I do "Sorry, I'm not interested, good luck on your next call. Bye" and then hang up.

It really isn't necessary to be an asshole to some poor Joe or Jane  who is just trying to make a living doing the only job they could find. You don't think they really want to be doing that do you? Have you ever spoken to somebody who does telemarketing, asked them how fast they would take another job if they found one?

I didn't think so.

People who do this sort of thing are selfish and ignorant. I don't often get really annoyed at people, but I'm sorry, this mindset is simply revolting. They should be ashamed of them selves. I sincerely hope they all loose their jobs and can find no way to pay their bills or feed themselves other than an endless string of telemarketing jobs. Maybe then they'll learn a little empathy.

People like this disgust me, especially since they can get their number put on a no-call list with no real effort. People are always telling me I'm too young and naive, that I don't have an adult's attitude or experience, well if this is the way adults behave, then I don't ever want to be one. I'll stick with young and naive, thank you very much.

to assume they know what time it is at the persons house they're calling is sometimes incorrect. Many of them are from out of state and are not in the same timezone as the person they are calling, therefor, they don't know it's your dinner time and are not purpously calling to interup your dinner.

And if it's dinner time don't answer the phone. It's very rare probably that it's a call that couldn't wait till you're done eating. If you can't ignore it get an answering machine and screen your calls. Telemarketers will usually hang up once the answering machine picks up..
