I don't think it is, as long as you don't chew the guy out. You're being reasonable, you sleep at abnormal times but you don't require that the world conform to your schedule. I never said you had to talk to them, just hanging up is perfectly fine.

I'm not a chewing out kind of person, so no, I don't chew them out.

I also don't sleep at odd hours, though, except for the very rare nap (in which I always seem to get woken up).

I've struggled with severe insomnia most of my life and only recently got a handle on it.  If I'm awakened by a call, I rarely fall back to sleep easily, if at all.  So when friends/family call and wake me, I get annoyed.  When telemarketers call and wake me, I consider it an intrusion.  It pisses me off, and I sometimes tell them, but I don't do the game playing thing or the chewing out thing.  And I do laugh at telemarketing jokes as linked in the OP because it's something I think about doing but would not do myself.  Like how I'd laugh at something silly in a sit-com.

In all seriousness, though, it's not a major issue in my life, just an annoyance.  It's not like I'm awakened daily by these calls.  Then again, because I don't use a land line, I receive far fewer calls now than the average joe.

I don't know about the states, but in Canada they don't call during normal sleeping hours. I think they are allowed to call between 9 AM and 9 PM, so if you're sleeping then, that sort of counts as odd hours.

I have no idea why, but this really annoys me. It just seems inexcusable, like kicking a hobo or something.

In the US they can call between 8AM and 9PM.

I don't know the hours for collections calls, but I've received those calls in the past as early as 7AM on a Sunday before.

I'm annoyed (actually more than annoyed) at any abusive behavior towards others - be they towards hobos, marketers, or people in general.

Way prior to the do not call list, we had a company who wouldnt' stop calling for my dad, no matter how many times we asked them to remove him from their list. We finally told him he died. That did the trick.

I only get annoyed with them when they keep trying to talk after I tell them "no thanks" - if they say "thanks for your time" or even just "ok, good bye" or whatever ... then all is well. If they start in with "but ..." or "if you'd just take a moment ..." that's when I get rude (depending on your definition). When we still had a land line, we would get calls - and if they kept trying to sell crap after I told them no, then I did one of 2 things - 1 - set the phone down and let them waste their time (one time the cat found it and was purring into it and meowing - not exactly sure when the guy hung up, but I'm sure he heard at least some of it), or 2 - tell them they are being an ass, I already said no, and then hang up.

why do you have to tell them they are an ass? Just hanging up isn't good enough? I truly don't understand why people go out of their way to be rude to those people who are simply doing their jobs.

It's like the guy in the mall who sells from the kiosks who constantly approach you to try out the lotion or perfume or whatever. I say no thanks. They continue to ask me each time I pass. Eventually I don't even say no thanks anymore..I just keep on walking and simply ignore him. Should I yell and scream at him and tell him he's bothering me and he's an idiot? Why? He's doing his job.

I agree with littlewonder, why not just say "I'm not interested" and hang up?

Hey what's wrong with kicking hobos?

I get calls all the time, but nowadays they are all automated recordings so i just hang up. Cant mess with a recording :( I used to mess with them though. I was in the middle of a family dinner a few years back when one called at like 8 at night, i was very polite and friendly, talked to the guy, got to know him, got his number. he was nice. After two or three minutes he had forgotten what he had called for. Finally i told him i had to feed my slave and hung up.

When i was younger and had a land line we all of a sudden started getting a rash of calls by couriers wanting to know where their next pick up was. The company musta found an box of old business cards or something and were handing them out to their employees. I got tired of telling them no they had the wrong number and being treated like it was my fault somehow. So i started telling them there were no more pick ups and to come back in.. Eventually the calls stopped...

You will still get some calls:

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt107.shtm

If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls?

No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most telemarketing calls, but not all. Because of limitations in the jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. However, if you ask a company with which you have an existing business relationship to place your number on its own do-not-call list, it must honor your request. You should keep a record of the date you make the request.

https://www.donotcall.gov/faq/faqdefault.aspx

The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website.

quote:

Just this week, vonage has called me every frigging day. The cruise ship has been a constant. Insurance companies, cable companies, do this to save our officers they need vests shit. They will stop calling from one state when I ask them to stop and will call from another state the next day

This would drive me insane! Can't you just call the companies you want to talk with?

ps - I've registered business numbers. Database does not seem to know the difference. I'm thinking of getting a new cell number before the 2012 elections and won't make the mistake of giving that out to political orgs again!

Well, if they keep talking after you have said "no thanks" you are perfectly justified in hanging up.  No further conversation need take place.  Why get rude?

So you are saying its okay for the telemarketers to call and take advantage of the Elderly? To switch their medicare plan and drug coverage so some insurance company can make more money just because someone had to make a living? Most of the time when you steel from a person this is a punishment. But the wonderful world of telemarketing allows unscrupulous people to take advantage of this who are not mentally capable of making secure financial decisions.

Telemarketers do not respect me. They do not remove my number when I ask them to and not to call back. The lovely Cincinnati Enquirer has called over 30 times this year. And because I have subscription to thier Sunday edition for Dad, they do not have to abide by the DNC list as they "technically" do business with me.

So I am sticking with my original statement that telemarkers have no moral compass. Taking advantage of the sick and Elderly is just plain wrong. And if they persist on calling me even after being requested not to do so, I have every right to abuse the hell out of them.

Oh for pete's sake, it's just a little fun over the phone! Get the f*ck over yourselves thinking you're holier than thou.  Noone's kicking hobo's or doing anything physical.

If teasing telemarketer's is the worst thing we ever do in life then I'd say we're pretty fantastic people.

I don't get many telemarketer calls but what pisses me off most about telemarketer's is what I call "the pause". The phone rings, I answer "Hello?" then there is "the pause..." followed by a "Hello?" from the telemarketer. He's got a hundred telephone numbers plugged into his auto-dialer waiting for a hit. Hence "the pause" and then "Hello?". If they call and answer immediately I politely tell them I am not interested and hang up. If I get "the pause..." then I rip them a new one with the same language that Hannah chick uses in the forums. That must be acceptable, right Heather?

Mummyman....you'd be surprised how quickly they might respond when you tell them (and again, go with a higher level manager) that you want to cancel due to the calls.  It's what stopped my endless calls from the Baltimore Sun.

Cursing out the voice on the other end of the phone has no impact on the people you've deemed unscrupulous.  Just don't answer the phone, delete the voicemail.  Or take some steps further to try to make it stop.

When you get salesmen/solicitors at your door, do you tell them to fuck off with the same  fierceness or do you just not answer the door?  same concept.

Why don't you simply hang up either way? If anything "the pause" makes it easier.
