Ok...so given the fact that no one (damn it why not!?) has the power to insist people engage in intellegent, stimulating, and thought provoking conversations on a regular basis allowing for a constant influx of new ideas and topics.......

yea, I got nothing.

Really people. This is free. If you dont enjoy the entertainment value of your fellow posters, hit block or go find another website.

My only suggestion would involve the other side. Profiles. I would LOVE to see more categories available. Dom/Switch/Sub/Slave. Even if you only added a "none of the above" option it would still help. But what about "Top" "Bottom" or "Just Plain Kinky".

I personally like the fact that the Moderators occasionally enter into a thread in a less than official capacity. Our Moderators are regular forum members who VOLUNTEER their time (ive moderated other boards...damn suck ass job if you ask me). Why the hell should they be asked to lose all opinion and personality just because they choose to help out something that they feel is worth it. They wouldnt volunteer if they didnt truly believe that this forum and website is a valid/resourceful/important venture. I like that they each have an independant personality.

I understand that certain threads, certain sub-forums occasionally have different mod standards. I think sometimes that leads to some confusion and some assumptions of  "favoritism".

For example: if ~sub1~ only posts in the off topic threads, she might get to get away with some snarkyness and bad language. Everytime she types "fuck you" she never gets mod spanked. People start to think the mods "favor her" because ~sub2~ decided to venture OUT of the off topic threads and typed "fuck you" in a thread in "Ask a Master".

then youve got all sorts of folks with panties in a bunch going "why'd you sensor ~sub2~? You always let ~sub1~ say the exact same thing!?"

So, either even out the boards with the same standards in all...OR: even better in my opnion, Make it public knowledge in a sticky or in the rules of each forum, that different topics get different leniancy.

It came up on another thread, I don't think Mods should be participating in discussions under their Mod accounts. If they want to participate, they should switch to their normal accounts and dive right in, but it is a little off putting trying to dispute a question of opinion with a Mod. They especially shouldn't be expressing opinions on posters openly under their Mod profile, that is really not acceptable.

i agree. People accept what the mods say as truth, more than other posters. For example, if a mod calls somebody a sock puppet, people assume they know that for a fact, that they have some way of knowing. If it's just an opinion, it's most unfair to say it as a mod, because it influences other peoples' opinions about that poster.

i don't mind mods participating in threads, except where they might unduly influence other people's opinions about a poster or an issue.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: This is your chance, speak now or forever hold your peace! :) (9/9/2011 1:53:08 PM)

Since this thread started, Hanners and I have hammered out what we think should be done with the forums to improve them.

GENERAL
1. A better search function, this one really is bad.
2. More orientation/ethnicity options on the other side I guess, even though that one doesn't really make any difference to us, a lot of people have asked for it, so it must matter to them.

MODERATION.

1. Get rid of the whole Awaiting Approval business, just ban the person from the forums altogether for the requisite amount of time and be done with it. It will be less annoying for the members and less work for the Mods. A win/win.
2. Allow different levels or degrees of moderation in different forums, but have a Forum Rules sticky that clearly spells out what will and won't be tolerated in that particular forum or sub-forum. For example, racial slurs shouldn't be allowed except in the jokes section, some jokes just need them.
3. Have the moderator on duty show up at the top of the forum page so you know who is on duty for that particular forum and who to go to if you need a Mod right away for some reason.

FORUMS
We suggest rearranging the forums in the following manner. First of all, in the Community Discussions section scrap all the Ask a X forums altogether and replace them with the following categories.
BDSM Basics <This is the "newbie" forum, where the "what is a slave type questions should go>
Theory & practice <For whatever doesn't fit into the other sections>
Relationship Issues <This is for the "Is he being reasonable" type questions go>
Technical questions <This is for the How to questions>
Toys and Apparel <Obvious>
Polyamorous Lifestyles <Obvious>
Gorean Lifestyles <Also obvious. We really don't think there should be one at all, but we really want to keep the poly section so we'll make a deal with the Goreans on this issue - you get yours and we get ours>

The Casual Banter section should have the following forums
Off topic
Humour <Yes, spelled correctly! We dare you to do it, think of how much fun it will be to see the US newbies pointing out the "spelling error" all the time [:D]It might also serve to remind them that this is an international site.>
Games
Random Stupidity <Bring back Stupidity!>
Politics & Religion

We really do like the idea of a special low moderation forum for non political or religious topics, it probably won't garner a lot of participants but its worth a try.

Also maybe a Personals or Seeking forum down by professional services for those people who just have to post their ads on the boards.

Oh yeah, they should also drop the whole no personal attacks rule, because that would make the Mods' job so much easier. [;)] <j/k>

I love Heather/Hanners' ideas....oh and the idea of allowing polls in each section rather than having to post it in the Polls section.

Uhm yeahhhhhhhh! If I see a mod type it I assume, perhaps wrongly, that they have ways of KNOWING it is FACT.

I agree, if they don't know for a fact, then they should keep their pie hole shut.

~FR~

why do folks seem to think that mods with the access that someoine like, say,Alpha, have DO NOT have access to the info that allows them to make the determinations of who is a sock and who isnt?

serioiusly?>

VAA has said that she doesn't. Some of the mods, however, act like they do have access to that info. i don't know whether they really do or not. But if they do, they should keep their mouths shut. It's just as shameful to use priviledged information like that to out posters, for the sake of looking hip and snarky, as it would be for them to lead others to believe that they know who is a sock puppet, when they really don't.

IrishMist -> RE: This is your chance, speak now or forever hold your peace! :) (9/9/2011 2:44:46 PM)

Side note...I have not read any responses; only the original OP.

I like the forums. I have been here long enough that I know what it's like to be 'mod slapped' lol. And yes, I deserved it. Of course, that has not stopped me from doing the same thing again. [8D]

I like these forums. I like the Mods. I think they do a wonderful job. Personally, I would not want their job. I enjoy telling people to fuck off too much [:)]

The longer I have been on the forums, the bolder I have got. Probably because others have gotten used to me and they way I communicate. On that same note, I go through 'spots' where I am more vocal in telling people to grow up; other times I just sit back and try to be a voice of reason. [8|]

As for making them better? Oh hell; let's see. I think the biggest complaint that many of us have here is the fact that some questions are asked over, and over, and over, and over...to the point that we get frustrated and tell people to read back posts. I think someone should be appointed to go through all the posts, compile a list of the most asked questions, and prepare a section that is just that...MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...and then sticky it at the top of every section.

*shrug*

I think it would help

I stand corrected, there was one suggestion in those pages.....better at about 30 posts a page lol. You are right though, you did make it, and I did note it.

Ok Im back out of the thread.

Actually, I thought that the suggestion that I made back on post #150 to perhaps add a person to the Mod team who covers the place during what seems to be the 'off hours' (meaning you guys actually sleep) was a decent suggestion.  I don't know if it's an option to you due to the available volunteer pool, but that doesn't make it an invalid suggestion.

FR: I think the forums rock. I do wish the games and random stupidity (yes stupidity) were still in the same place though. I now never go to the games section, where I used to join in once in a while.

The mods do their best to keep everyone happy, and I don't see what CM could possibly change.

Oooh! I just thought of something! I would like a "like" button or a "thanks" button. (and a this post is stupid button would be awesome too!)

M4S73R -> RE: This is your chance, speak now or forever hold your peace! :) (9/9/2011 3:15:53 PM)

I would like for when a mod sends me a email telling my my post is been removed to tell me what the post was and where it was at. I got a email saying that i had something removed due to commenting about the hijack on the hijacked thread, just wanting to see where its at for future reference.

Then there is no reason for the mods to say anything.  Frankly, it looks unprofessional, and gives posters the idea that mods can access their personal information.  If that is NOT true, then the mods shouldn't lead people to believe that it is, and lead people to believe that their OPINION about a poster is a FACT.  If it IS true, then the mods have a responsibility to keep that private information private.  Either way, it makes the mods look bad.

Nor should they be openly accusing people of being behind an account they think is a sockpuppet. Just saying.

I'm genuinely puzzled about this. Maybe I missed it but I've never seen a Mod post someone's personal info.
