Thanks for that tip, Kirata.

FR:

I strongly disagree with returning the name "Stupidity" to the "Random" forum.

Regular members give their OPINIONS about who is a sock puppet all the time.  In reality, they cannot possibly know for sure, and the forum members know that they can't.  It's clear that when a forum member accuses someone of being a sock puppet, that they are merely expressing their opinion about it. When a mod does it, it makes it look like a FACT.  If it IS a fact, then the mods shouldn't be disclosing that personal information about users.  If it is NOT a fact, then they still shouldn't say anything, because many forum members assume that it's a fact simply because a mod said it.  i think that's an unethical and unfair use of power.

I have to back Pam on this one.  I'm not new here, yet I was reading a thread earlier today where a mod came in and called a poster a "sock puppet".  I have to be honest, I just assumed that moderators have the ability to see IP addresses and if they called someone a sock puppet, then it must be true.

Just call me naive and trusting when it comes to authority figures.  [:)]

Epytropos -> RE: This is your chance, speak now or forever hold your peace! :) (9/9/2011 8:48:30 PM)

Most of the things I have issue with are not things the staff should or could deal with, so I'm going to avoid bitching about them for the sake of hearing myself bitch. I will come out strongly against the idea of increased moderation to prevent so-called personal attacks. The abridgment of free speech is not the answer. The answer is simply to employ old-fashioned social censure on people who behave badly. I can rank my favorite forums (kink or otherwise) in my head and they are my favorite in inverse proportion to the level of moderation they receive. More moderation means less willingness to speak your mind, which means less real discussion. If anything, shoot for less moderation, not more. I would say limit yourselves to 'out'ing people's real identities (IE if someone gets pissed off because person x stood them up and decides to start naming names all over the forums) and moving threads to the proper section.

One thing, though: Stop feeding the trolls. I have never seen a forum more willing to semi-reasonably engage with people who are clearly dicking with them than you lot. It's like baby's first internets in this shit.

EDIT: No, that last bit isn't a suggestion to the mgmt and staff, I'm just saying ;)

GENERAL
1. A better search function, this one really is bad.
<-----

FORUMS
BDSM Basics <This is the "newbie" forum, where the "what is a slave type questions should go>
Theory & practice <For whatever doesn't fit into the other sections>
Relationship Issues <This is for the "Is he being reasonable" type questions go>
Technical questions <This is for the How to questions>
Toys and Apparel <Obvious>
Polyamorous Lifestyles <Obvious>
Gorean Lifestyles <Also obvious. We really don't think there should be one at all, but we really want to keep the poly section so we'll make a deal with the Goreans on this issue - you get yours and we get ours>

The Casual Banter section should have the following forums
Off topic
Humour <Yes, spelled correctly! We dare you to do it, think of how much fun it will be to see the US newbies pointing out the "spelling error" all the time [:D]It might also serve to remind them that this is an international site.>
Games
Random Stupidity <Bring back Stupidity!>
Politics & Religion

<j/k>

This. With one stipulation, upon further discussion and review, keep the Ask a .... sections as they are now. There are too many topics to be discussed among differing dynamics that this would bloat that section and constantly push threads around. If no other reason than to make it more orderly and easier to navigate particular discussions, keep this as it is. The idea I believe is to make the forums better, and clumping four sections into one will just make for a clusterfuck.

People of differing roles post in each section as they deem fit; putting them into one large pot will just cause clutter, and discussions to be pushed to the bottom, creating a moderation nightmare. Especially if you allow polls to be created in each section. The last thing we need is someone making several nonsensical polls for the purpose of being an annoyance and make navigating such a section more detrimental than beneficial.

If you do allow polling in each section, limit it to one poll per person, per day. Just look at the polls flooding the current section.

What I do like about their idea is that it divides up the thread based on the topic, rather than on the gender. In all honesty, a lesbian Domme has more in common with a straight Dom than with a straight Domme. We both deal with female subs, and straight or lez, a female sub is pretty much a female sub.

I'm going to quibble with this "stop feeding the trolls" meme.

First of all, it is not infrequently the case that one person's "troll" is another person's hero. Who gets to decide who the "trolls" are? You? No thanks. And what's this "baby's first Internet" crap? Who gets to decide what posters another person may "semi-reasonably engage with," and who deserves to be insulted for not bowing to that wisdom? Seems to me there's a bit of trollishness right there.

Secondly, the theory behind the advice (I keep hearing) is that the troll will go away if it doesn't get any attention. But a little attention goes a long way, and it is simply unrealistic to imagine that everyone will agree on who is a troll completely worthy of being uniformly ignored by all concerned. So let's stick with reality, shall we? This whole "don't feed the trolls" theme is a sanctimonious waste of breath.

More seriously, however, the theory is wrong.

I once belonged to a Theology Forum that became infested by Fundie trolls. The membership consisted of priests, theologians, Buddhist monks, university professors, etc., who quietly ignored the trolls after failing in their attempts to engage them in a civil and substantive way. The trolls stayed. They disrupted every discussion, and were proud to announce (rather frequently, I might add) that the absence of argumentative responses simply proved that everyone knew they were right.

In my experience, there are only two ways to deal with trolls. Ban them, or squash them like the pestilent little pricks that they are. Given the unlikelihood of there being universal agreement on who is a troll sufficiently worthy of being banned, and given my deep dislike for censorship, I am not sanguine about banning as a solution. That leaves squashing them, exposing their idiocy and hubris at every turn (assuming you can, of course, which is always a detail worth considering when branding people trolls).

Simply put, peer pressure works. It may not work fast, and it may not work completely, but it is the only thing I have ever seen have any noticeable effect. Understandably, many people will prefer not to engage with the more trollish sorts. But there are always some who will take them on, and give them a nice lunch for their trouble. That's the important thing when dealing with trolls, feeding them the right diet.

How about one forum specifically for polls?

No, no, please no. Put the polls where they belong according to topic, having them buried away in a poll forum will just make them disappear in obscurity.

I just spotted the thread VAA (since the "last one to post" died, I don't make it through here so much), but I am calling this a night.  I hope you don't end it before I get a chance to reflect over coffee.

This thread, and to a lesser extent, the other thread, is to solicit the ideas and opinions of the users. It is not to solicit the opinion of a user and one or more of their alternate accounts to artificially skew the discussion of those same ideas and opinions.

This is not the first time we have told someone to stop using another account to bolster the numbers in their fanbase.

That's what I'm missing - a fanbase.  I'm gonna have to git me one of those.

I would also appreciate a "go to first unread" for longer threads such as this.

That already exists. There is a little graphic of an arrow pointing to a page at the very beginning of each topic title with posts that are newer than the last one you read. If you hover your mouse over the graphic, a tool-tip will pop up that reads: "Go to first unread post." Just click and go. If you've already read the last post in a topic, the graphic won't appear. And the feature seems only to be available for the first dozen topic titles.

OMG, loving this! Thanks Kirata!

Agree a better search function would make everyone's life easier, esp. for newbies.
Agree I don't participate as often because of some sociopaths' [including a couple who are posting here and are on my 'hide' list ;-)] pissing contests, esp. on 'Ask a Mistress' and 'Ask a Master'.
Agree that when the bullying of someone else escalates and I and others report on their behalf, the mods ride swiftly to the rescue :-)
Would like the 'posted at' timesign changed from numerals (which differ from country to country) to writing out Sept 10, 2011, i.e., we Canucks write as day/month/year as 10/09/11 which is written here as month/day/year, 09/10/11. This disambiguation would also help in rapidly identifying zombiethreads.

Maybe something in BIG BRIGHT RED LETTERS at the top f the intro forum: If you wouldnt say it to introduce yourself in a face to face meeting, don't say it HERE!! Thats what your PROFILE is for!

I know, but if it is in BIG RED LETTERS, MAYBE a few would rethink their intros... maybe...

or FAQ threads. It's so much easier to just post and then say "oops" when they get it wrong. People are incredibly unobservant. I've seen people waiting for a bus at a stop where there is a sign saying the stop has been removed. I've also seen people look past a sign directing them to where they want to go. Dumbasses abound!
