I work in a gym. All over the place we have HUGE signs that have written in BIG GIANT RED LETTERS the instructions

"FAILURE TO RETURN WEIGHTS TO RACK AFTER USE WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION OF GYM MEMBERSHIP"

It doesnt work. No one puts things away. Ever. People dont read. People do what they want. People in general live life with a "fuck you" attitude to the rest of the world. Its just the way people are. The more instructions you post, the more signs you make, the worse behavior people will exhibit. Because those rules couldnt POSSIBLY mean them.

I wish the search function was a bit more user friendly, with a time range function, or a way to list all threads started by a specific user.

Sometimes threads go bad (or are born that way), and are removed by the mods.  Instead of that, perhaps the threads could be locked, and tossed into a "view only" section that could be searched.  Maybe install a cooling off period, before they can be seen.  Often, there is good stuff that goes out with the bad, and is lost.  It would also serve as an educational tool, on how not to participate.

In all honesty I don't think anything needs to be changed. The layout of the forums and threads is great and easy to navigate, so please don't change it! Another kink site I am on took a leaf out of Fetlife's books and now there is a menagerie of discussion groups that are impossible to follow...

I like the ideas of a "New to the Forum" section and a Terminology section.

I also like the idea of merging the "Ask a Mistress" and "Ask a Master" sections into "Ask a Dominant"

I think the search bar should be more prominent, perhaps at the top of the screen rather than the bottom of the thread, one on the main page when you enter the message boards would be nice too (a search button and bar that is, rather than just a link).

In terms of moderation it seems a reasonable balance is going :) - some of the flame wars seem to go on a bit long, though as of yet one hasn't annoyed me enough to use the report button... When I moderated on a game forum a few years back one of our jobs was to welcome new members and try and engage them into being active on the forums, through competitions for icons/picture signatures, daft games etc. Bit more difficult here granted, but may be something to think on if you feel there are more flames than fun and interest going on.

GreedyTop -> RE: This is your chance, speak now or forever hold your peace! :) (9/10/2011 7:55:11 AM)

the only problem with the terminology thing is (as has been proven over and over and over and over, etc on here) is that getting universal agreement is NOT going to happen...

It is not to solicit the opinion of a user and one or more of their alternate accounts to artificially skew the discussion of those same ideas and opinions.
Nor is it the place to solicit the opinion of the moderators as to who is and is not a real poster. For any Moderator to openly accuse any account of being a sockpuppet is wrong, and for a Moderator to accuse any other poster of being behind a sockpuppet is even moreso.

You stuck your foot in your mouth and screwed up, admit it. Swallow your pride and do what Pi had the guts to do.

You can't have it both ways. You are a moderator or a poster, you can't be both at the same time. You have your regular account, use that to "out" or accuse other members and keep your Moderator account for the purposes for which it was intended.

If not, then as far as I am concerned you are just another poster, and I will treat you and your statements from here on out as simply the opinion of one more member, with no more validity or weight than those of anybody else.

You actually already have one, it's just not the 'Oh he's so brilliant" sort of fan base, more the "Oh let's see what idiocy he's posted today" fanbase. I for one will always read your stuff for its tremendous comedic value.

Why? Either way they have the info they have. I would think calling someone a troll -period - would be the more important issue.

True, but you can trim it down to the basic definition and have a link underneath to a discussion thread for more information and thoughts, and even point out that the definition isn't universally accepted - it's a starting point if nothing else. I personally think a good example of a BDSM dictionary can be found on Informed Consent, though I am not as keen on the forums there as here.

Right now I am posting from one IP.

I'm going to quibble with this "stop feeding the trolls" meme.

First of all, it is not infrequently the case that one person's "troll" is another person's hero. Who gets to decide who the "trolls" are? You? No thanks. And what's this "baby's first Internet" crap? Who gets to decide what posters another person may "semi-reasonably engage with," and who deserves to be insulted for not bowing to that wisdom? Seems to me there's a bit of trollishness right there.

Secondly, the theory behind the advice (I keep hearing) is that the troll will go away if it doesn't get any attention. But a little attention goes a long way, and it is simply unrealistic to imagine that everyone will agree on who is a troll completely worthy of being uniformly ignored by all concerned. So let's stick with reality, shall we? This whole "don't feed the trolls" theme is a sanctimonious waste of breath.

More seriously, however, the theory is wrong.

I once belonged to a Theology Forum that became infested by Fundie trolls. The membership consisted of priests, theologians, Buddhist monks, university professors, etc., who quietly ignored the trolls after failing in their attempts to engage them in a civil and substantive way. The trolls stayed. They disrupted every discussion, and were proud to announce (rather frequently, I might add) that the absence of argumentative responses simply proved that everyone knew they were right.

In my experience, there are only two ways to deal with trolls. Ban them, or squash them like the pestilent little pricks that they are. Given the unlikelihood of there being universal agreement on who is a troll sufficiently worthy of being banned, and given my deep dislike for censorship, I am not sanguine about banning as a solution. That leaves squashing them, exposing their idiocy and hubris at every turn (assuming you can, of course, which is always a detail worth considering when branding people trolls).

Simply put, peer pressure works. It may not work fast, and it may not work completely, but it is the only thing I have ever seen have any noticeable effect. Understandably, many people will prefer not to engage with the more trollish sorts. But there are always some who will take them on, and give them a nice lunch for their trouble. That's the important thing when dealing with trolls, feeding them the right diet.

K.

A troll is someone who is simply posting to piss people off. It isn't relevant what they're posting, merely that they're posting it for that purpose. The only people to whom they would be a "hero" would be someone who enjoyed seeing their fellow forum members being trolled - in other words, a latent troll. The only reason there would be disagreement on who is and is not a troll would be in the case that some people were incapable of reading a situation correctly, which is precisely the problem I'm bemoaning.

As to "baby's first internet," lighten up.

As to social pressure and so forth, if that actually worked the people you were dealing with were not trolls, they were merely stupid. The whole point of trolling is to inflame that sort of so-called "peer pressure." Pissing people off such that they attempt to shout the troll down is the entire point of the exercise. There is no amount of success that is going to make a troll stop trolling unless you can actually make them frightened for their real-life selves, and if the Police Benevolent Society forums can't do it neither can you.

And now another IP

ETA: And editing from another. I am signed into the site on two different IP addresses at the same time on a single computer, and if I wished to take the time to configure it, I could be signed in on the same account under even more IPs at the same time.

You see, the fact that anybody at all can surf the net on two IPs at the same time with no more computer skill than is required to use Firefox makes any "proof" they might have proof of nothing..

And wowzers!! I'm signed in too under yet a different IP, all 3 are signed in together on a single computer. See below....

IP addresses are indicative, not definitive, as to the identity of the person posting.

As you have likely demonstrated (I think, I can't see the IP addresses), with just a modicum of knowledge, one can change IP addresses on every single post.

On another forum that I use to post in, long ago, I was claimed to have "several" sock puppets, I got into a private discussion with a mod who made the claim, and had to explain "static IP's", "dynamic IPs", and "anonymous proxy server"

She still didn't believe me.

And now, if you look at the top of the page, you'll see that Arpig, Arswine, Arsow, and arcop are all signed in at once. Arpig is actually signed in twice, if I had another joke account i could have signed that one in instead, but i can't be bothered making it just to prove a point.
So I am signed in 5 different times under 4 different accounts on 5 different IP addresses on a single computer simultaniously.
