JERUSALEM — Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas formally announced Friday that the Palestinians will ask the U.N. Security Council next week to approve full membership of a Palestinian state in the United Nations. The announcement, in a speech to top Palestinian officials at Abbas’s office in Ramallah, appeared to seal the fate of last-ditch efforts by the Obama administration and other international mediators to come up with a formula to resume Israeli-Palestinian talks and head off the U.N. bid.

It actually makes sense, the UN created a homeland for Jews, why not one for Palestinians?

Once again the United States is diplomatically boxed in.We will use our veto in the Security Council...thereby further alienating the Arab world.
The stance of the Obama administration has always been that the path to peace was direct negotiations between the parties.

They actually did that at the same time they created Israel. Egypt, Jordan and Syria conquered Palestine and divided it up amongst themselves the day it came into existence.

Abbas is grandstanding. It takes a security council vote to admit a new nation.

farglebargle -> RE: Abbas formally announces U.N. membership bid (9/16/2011 6:00:54 PM)

Yeah, but all it takes is a flag to BE a new nation...

slvemike4u -> RE: Abbas formally announces U.N. membership bid (9/16/2011 6:19:45 PM)

No ,you actually needs folks to recognize and acknowledge that new flag.

Aside from a weapons dealer with a finance program?

Tell that to the Somalians...

jlf1961 -> RE: Abbas formally announces U.N. membership bid (9/17/2011 2:12:46 PM)

Moon, the Somalians dont even recognize their flag, or their government out side of the capital.

Moonhead -> RE: Abbas formally announces U.N. membership bid (9/17/2011 2:25:26 PM)

That's the whole problem there, really.

The independent nation of Palestine based on the 1967 borders, is recognised by c110 countries worldwide, who have exchanged Ambassadors with Palestine.

A question Americans might like to reflect upon is:
How will the US exercising its veto and denying Palestine full membership of the UN, advance US interests, or contribute towards achieving the US's stated goals?

"The United States believes that negotiations should result in two states, with permanent Palestinian borders with Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine. The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states. The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, and reach their potential, in a sovereign and contiguous state." Pres Obama May 2011.

Because one moron who got elected tries to change the US goals that doesnt mean that everyone else goes along with them. And his bungling of the Israel/ME situtation ensures his defeat, even if there are cosmetic economic gains in the next year.

And meanwhile, get the Israel lobby to hammer anyone in the administration or Congress who says aloud that maybe Bibi has made some mistakes, not just Barack. There, who says Mr. Netanyahu doesn’t have a strategy?

ashjor911 -> RE: Tom Friedman says Netanyahu is the problem.... (9/18/2011 10:01:04 AM)

Its actually a diplomatic move from (abbas), he want to do a thing which non really understand,
the PLO...... the PLO was just a movemet.... now its (Palestinian Authority), & now He is trying to make it a (state),

I think if he gose to the UN or not, if he get in or not, its not going to change the powers in that area,
& will not effect the peace process..... coz there is not any..

He want to become more legally, he is the (President), but he is just like me a (Palestinian refugees, Syrian),
& even that he is a Refugee, & the President, he is a refugee Still (meaning he is still holding a travel document issued from Damascus), LOL huh? what kind of President, who is not a citizen?

you can Imagine how it would be like if turn the PLO.... into his own State...... It would be (Fucked UP)

Christ, really? How much propaganda do you voluntarily consume daily? My guess is that the number is way above your doctor's recommended dose.

Even if what you said were true--and it most decidedly is not, unless you can magically such a ridiculous assertion-- Israel commits the daily war crimes of imprisoning a million plus Palestinians in Gaza, preventing food and basic medical supplies from entering and murdering innocent civilians. They regularly bomb and kill women and children in the strip. The last time Israel invaded Gaza they killed over 1000 Palestinians compare to less than 50 Israeli deaths--so who's the terrorists? My money is on the oppressing power that has all the heavy armor and modern air force, and not the people who can barely feed themselves.
----

For those interested, Glenn Greenwald has a piece related to this, regarding the culture of the Israel lobby in the US and various political orthodoxies that can or cannot be spoken aloud.

quote:

Walt and Mearshiemer merely voiced a truth [the Israel lobby's great power over US policy] which has long been known and obvious but was not allowed to be spoken. That's precisely why the demonization campaign against them was so vicious and concerted: those who voice prohibited truths are always more hated than those who spout obvious lies. That the foreign affairs columnist most admired in Washington circles just expressed the same point demonstrates that recognition of this previously prohibited fact has now become mainstream.
