Actually doing helps with early detection of this disease.

Bullshit. Von Willebrand's is detected with a blood test. It's a hematological disorder, docking and ear shaping won't make a damn difference in it's detection. Ken is right, it's a breeding issue, a responsible breeder won't breed a dog with the disorder.

http://www.gentledoberman.com/veterinary-care/common-diseases/von-willebrands

That article says that the docking and ear cutting shows that the disease is not an issue in doberman's. It says nothing about early detection.

From the article you linked.
quote:

If a prevalent bleeding disorder did exist in the Doberman breed, all of the systematic cutting of the Doberman would certainly reveal it. At least some Dobermans would bleed excessively, but this is extremely rare. So why is discussion on von Willebrand’s disease so common in the Doberman community – when it’s not a real problem? I suspect it has much to do with the simplicity of the test, and breeders who love to flaunt a passed test regardless of its importance.
Face it, it's an unecessary surgery done purely to make the dog fit a certain artificial image that for some reason various people have decided a doberman should look like.
It serves no useful purpose whatsoever.

-10 for being a dumbass.

What Arpy said.

Dear OP......I wish I could crop YOUR tail and ears! Sans anesthesia of course. The ridiculous way in which you've defending your point on this thread disgusts me. Your reasoning is blind and only makes you look stupid.

Thank god the vets around here that will do that sort of shit are growing less and less.

I hope LadyC sees this thread!

Well i hope none of you have gaged ears, peircings, tattoos, removal of cats claws. Also i would suggest if you all feel this strongly about it to stop eating beef, pork and chicken. All those animals recieve much more cruelty then weather I dock/crop my dog.
End of the day, theyre animals, theres no law stating that this is illigal. its a world wide controversy and personally, I paid for em, ill do what i want.  Thanks for showing me who the trolls are and derailing yet another fucking thead on these boards. Good job. you have all been blocked and this will be my last post on this particular thread. You are entilted to your opinion even though its factless bullshit but there it is.

Oh yay......a dumbass blocking me......my heart is breaking.

BTW, unless you edit it, the first paragraph of your most recent post on this thread makes no sense at all.

I think what dumbass means is that he has hidden our posts. I clicked on his avatar (yeah I'm bored) and I could still access his profile...mind you blocking us would still be dumb because we would still be able to read and respond to his posts, we just wouldn't be able to contact him privately, which I wasn't going to do anyway.

Oy someone this dumb shouldn't be in charge of animals.

I kinda figured that is what he meant but knowing people like I know people......he won't be able to avoid reading what we write anyway. It will drive him batshit crazy.

I am waiting for some new 'expert' to come riding in to defend him. I always love when that happens.

I could have posted a whole long bunch of stuff to argue his validations. I've NEVER had a canine rehab partner mutilated to protect them from aggressive dogs, nor have any of the experts I've worked with recommended it. Not one vet, even those that have admitted to doing the work, advised it be done.

But yanno..........stupid is as stupid does. If someone truly likes what they are doing they will fight tooth and nail to continue validating it, even when faced with facts proving otherwise. It's just not worth the energy to argue shit like that.

And here's the kicker. By posting that he's done with this thread he can't reply to us without looking like a total ass...mind you he's already done that.

Does anyone know a vet that will cut the feet off of my puppy?  See her name is "Stumpy" and I feel like she should match her name, and wouldn't the little short steps she would take be soooo cute and darling!  So please help with this.

On a serious note..  I got a Rat Terrorist..  err.. Terrier from a breeder, it was a rescue in as much as they were not supposed to have bred (dog got out)   apparently a stumpy bob tail tail is also natural, but when she waggles her little stump, I am saddened.. I wish she had a REAL tail, and hope the breeder didnt cut it.  I'm not judgmental, but macho man having macho dog,  spinning like a top to justify  his choice of mutilation.. <sigh>

Thre are some breeds which carry a mutation that results in a naturally short tail. I'm not aware of rat terriers carrying any of those mutations but it is possible. Just check the tip for a scar. If the tail was surgically docked there will be a scar if not there won't be.

Fact, it is illegal in Europe and in many other parts of the world.
Fact, it is a purely cosmetic mutilation done stricty because a breed standard written over a century ago mandates it.

Blocking everyone who is a better person than you are may make you feel good but I doubt you'll actually do it. You're the sort who can't help but read what others have to say about you.

So in an effort to add some levity to a thread that has taken a turn allow me to regale you all with a tale of one of my walks....as I'm walking the dog, with cat trailing I notice the cat has gone into hunter mode....tail swishing back and forth, back arched, body wound tight like a spring.
Seems some silly bird thought it was safe to walk along the ground looking for seeds, food or whatever.....Cat pounces catching the bird still grounded.....and starts batting the bird back and forth....as I rush over trying to stop the cat from killing this bird....another bird swoops in,placing him/herself at risk.I was flabbergasted( I would never have guessed that birds were capable of heroism) the cat was distracted...first bird recovered and took off.The cat slinked away from the site of the battle having been bested by two birds....lol

You're lucky your cat didn't run into a crow.  They're the gangsters of the avian world.

Blue jays are the gangsters close cousin.

I remember getting attacked by them as a kid. Redwing black birds will attack people that get too close to their nest also.

I was hoping Lady Constanze would see this thread. She lives with two Dobbies and adores the breed. She also has some very strong opinions about mutilating an animal to make it conform to arbitrary breed standards. I was thinking about offering her some help with practising docking on the OP.
I for one are glad to know that this barbarian practise is illegal in most of Europe, as is declawing a cat, by the way.

Our family dog when I was growing up was a poodle.
We had his tail docked. He lived a long and happy life but
my mom has always regretted doing that to him because he
did suffer and it was unnecessary suffering. When we got a
second poodle we left his tail alone.
I think declawing a cat is barbaric, my vet refuses to do it.
One of the most disgusting stories I've heard on this topic was something
I read in Kathie Lee Giffords autobiography. She said her first
husband had a dachshund who was yippy so he had a vet slice it's vocal
cords. She tells about the dog running up to her barking but making no
sound.
On a happier note. I have a shih tzu, two cats and a Appaloosa horse.
The dog and cats are all rescues. I want to adopt a rescue rabbit and
maybe foster for a rescue rabbit organization.
I'd love to have chinchillas and guinea pigs.
