Just a quick mention in regards to titles. I tend to address men in general as Sir, be it in a business setting or in a lifestyle setting. and ofcourse Ma'am for ladies. This for me is common courtesy. I'm not trying to win favour with anyone, it that i can feel my mother standing behind me about to wack me in the back of the head if i don't lol  It's become so ingrained in my personality that I just do it.

Even people i know well, i'll tend to say "yes Sir",or  "thank you Sir". I've never seen it as giving someone a title.

If i was to title myself *eg* it would be "smart assed imp"

I have always believed that everyone deserve respect until such time they prove themselves unworthy of it. And well I'm pretty sure Sir and Ma'am is a lot better then some of the things that pop into my head

I have been called Master for as long as I have been in the lifestyle, something like 30 years.  I have never required anyone to use Master as a title for me even though my sub does.

Most subs when they talk to me call me Sir.  My sub out of respect to other Doms call them Sir.  When I am introduced at an event most introduce me as Master Charles.

By the way, I wrote a letter to President Eisenhower when I was ten years old, his reply (by someone not him) was to Master Charles, I guess that made me a Master LOL

Like I said - titles are not telling anything in the scene life.

Only thing that matters is that you can look your submissive straight in the eye and vise versa and feel that the sub trusts you 100%.

That is the only title I think anybody needs from his/her submissive/slave.

In most cases they are self appointed, in some cases they are granted by a group or a submissive.  But keep in mind, not everyone views it at a title.

What makes me a master is simple, because I began by mastering myself and continue to do so.

I will admit to being jaded at this point - however, the most sincere DOM's that I have met haven't had these titles.  They are simply "Joe".  The submissives always grant them the title.

I have some submissives in my life, while not being mine, still refer to me as 'Sir' and it is completely natural to me.  I ahve some that just call me by name until we start playing, and then I become 'Sir' or 'Master'.  And a rare few just call me by my name, which is what I prefer.

I never encouraged any of this title nonsense with any of them, and usually try to discourage it, since it does tend to put me on a pedestal and, well... I hate heights.  Some people insist on it, though.  While I can't fathom why, it's their call, not mine, so what the hell, right?

Man, am I ever late to this party...

I'm not quite sure which titles you're talking about. In academia, I've earned the title of Dr., but I never use it. In the D/s community-- such as it is, and of which I'm only tenuously a part-- I don't have a title. Halcyone calls me 'Sir' and I call her 'miss' or 'my girl,' but I don't expect anyone else to refer to me that way; it's just something between my slave and I. We decided on our forms of address together, as those that felt most comfortable to us.

I call Him, Sir, however, he has stated a preference for: "Master, my sun, my moon, my stars and centre of my very existance".

(just a quick reply)

How did I get the title of Master?

I earned it!!

My background is from a leather community where there was a practice of "rights of passage", mentoring & recognition. There wasn't anyone with a self-imposed title. Even submissives went through a period of mentoring before they were courted by dominants that had already received blessing by those that the submissive fell under protection with.

Do you mean titles, as in titles used in conversation, or screen names?

If you mean titles, the only ones worth having are the ones that are given by someone else. It means nothing if I call myself Master, Dom, Daddy, Goddess, etc. anymore than it means anything if I call myself and Olympic Gold Medalist. Only when someone else grants me that title does it mean anything... because it was earned. The problem for most of us is that online titles and screennames SEEM synonymous, but aren't.

I get the idea behind giving yourself a screename that is descriptive, like DomDaddy38, because it tells people a little about how you view yourself, even if most of the time what they think and what you meant by that screename are different. But calling it a title? Afraid not. Personally, I'm not too impressed when someone tries to insist I call them Master, Dom, or sub, slave. None of them are titles until I give them that status. At most, they're self-descriptions of what the person WANTS to be.

As for me being called Master, I don't really want anyone else calling me that but my love. Nor will I respect you in the morning if you do.

I was into BDSM for years before I came online and when I did, I entered a room that was a quasi-bdsm chatroom. I used my own name until one day a very irrate older Dominant told me that the people in the space who were into bdsm were required to have tiltes that distinguished them from everyone else. At first I wasn't really serious about it and I chose the name Octavian, thinking people would know that Octavian had been an emperor and therefore a Dominant, but they didn't get the connection and so I became Lord Octavian. Strangely enough I found this title somewhat freeing and the tilte became a kind of alter ego.

well now a question I feel like answering .

titles titles who's got the titles .....

I have many of them and they all mean different things to me and to others

My On-line tag and the one I use most of the time in my writting and in Doing demos and Seminars is Lord Wolf . Oddly this is not a Lifestyle title not an On-line title but one given to me In the Outlaw biker realms. to Explain ...

I have been Wolf since I was around 12 years old , My family called me Little T , But my friends all called me wolf? Why ? Well,  because I bite people , Still do to this day < shrug> this tag followed me when I bought My first bike at 14 . And it was Displayed as my name on my colors . The Lord affectation came from my interaction with people . I used to be told I was the most polite and well mannered Outlaw , a 1 %er for those in the know, anyone had ever met LOL. So those that I rode with started calling me Lord Wolf because of my manners.

When I first got On-line 14 years ago , I bought a computer for my daughter , It came with AOL , so I signed up , My First screen name Included Name and my address at the time . BadWolf666 , after a month of recieving email and IM's from satanists I changed it to Lordwolf00 < BTW if you search that name on google you may be surprised>

I Kept it in the BDSM realms because I like the Dictionary definition , It explains so Much about who I am and what I am ...
.
Main Entry: 1lord

Function: noun
Pronunciation: 'lo rd
Etymology: Middle English loverd, lord, from Old English hlAford, from hlAf loaf + weard keeper -- more at LOAF , WARD
1 : one having power and authority over others:

< I have power over others ::smile:: By their choice>

a : a ruler by hereditary right or preeminence to whom service and obedience are due

< I run My Family Business>

b : one of whom a fee or estate is held in feudal tenure

< I will Inherit said business and its holdings>

c : an owner of land or other real property

< Yup I Own My House>

d obsolete : the male head of a household

< I dont think its obsolete , ::smile:: It works for us>

e : HUSBAND

<Have been , will be again >

f : one that has achieved mastery or that exercises leadership or great power in some area

< The Shadow academy , My School , Which I lead and well have power over LOL Some would say I have great power in the BDSM realms , Personally I think they are blowing smoke up my ass LOL , But it also fits because I believe I master the tools Of BDSM>

5 : a person chosen to preside over a festival

::smile:: there is more but this one fits also , I run events and festivals LOL . I also do Not bandy about the title "Master" because I feel its a title earned Not given or taken by oneself , But thats a personal choice and I have no trouble with others usiing it as they choose. Thats one of the reasons I Use Lord as a title because only those who offer themselves to me are allowed to use the title master in referance to myself.

Now I suppose your wondering about my signature line " HeadMaster" well actually that has Less to do with a BDSM title and More to do with the administration and higherarchy Of my School . A School Needs a headmaster to run it , and thats me . Trust me Some of my instructors still balk at using it,  But then Fem Dommes sometimes Dont like a title of respect used towards a Male . I suppose they put up with it because , I hope, they in some way respect me < shrug>

I dont disallow any title people wish to use, But the one that really sort of burns My butt is " Dom".  Dominance and Submission are parts of our nature,  not what we do . A Person IS dominant , But you need not be Dominant to dominate someone , You just need to be cruel. Abusers Dominate also you know . Dominant is what you are , Submissive is in your nature , these are not " Titles" to explain what you do , But to discribe your nature . Anyway thats another topic all together and One I constantly get in trouble over discussing LOL

Anyway Just my two cents worth

Shade and sweet water in your Journeys

My lil girl calls me "Daddy", those in the community, regarless of role, call me "Eric", those who either can't remember my name or are just being proper tend to call Dom's "Sir".  Once when I asked a sub why he called me sir, he replied that it was his show of respect to those he saw as real Dominant men and "Lady" for the women.

I think screen names are just for role recognition.  Sir_Winterwolf on my yahoo doesn't meant anyone need call me Sir or Lord.
Sub's that give me a title mean it as a sign of recognition, respect, or term of endearment.
Like one: "Master Bator"

Technically, My title is Lord.  I achieved this title by being elevated to 3rd degree in the English Traditional and Gardinarian Traditions of Wicca.

As far as BDSM (or Wicca for that matter) is concerned, IMHO, you don't get the title.  There's not a day that goes by that I don't have to earn that title.  Whether or not I am working with a submissive partner, or working with My Coven, I feel I need to do something everyday that defines that I am in control of Myself, and therefore can control and lead others.  If I don't exemplify who I am, then what's the point?

A title is just that. I could care less about them unless that is something that she and I like to have for the sake of intimacy. Otherwise it is a name.
