I know this tazzy. I think it's a shame that service staff in the USA have such poor wages that they rely on customers to supplement their wages.

agirl

They have a different tipping culture in the USA, agirl. Me, it would fry my brains. I hate all the awkwardness around tipping, too.

Some years ago I read in my Mum's book of etiquette that one is supposed to tip barbers and hairdressers. Ashamed at not having thought of this before, I duly started giving an extra quid on top of the £9 charge. After a year or so, my barber gave me a deeply embarrassed, squirmingly uncomfortable lecture . . . "Look, mate, no offence, but I hate it when you give tips. Thanks and all that, kind of you, you're a gent - but wish you wouldn't".

*Sigh*. My mother's book of etiquette was published in 1958. Things change.

I just find it cute that you checked in with your Mum's book from 1958...lol.

I love working for tips. (well til I finish school anyways)
What I make is based purely on my performance.

If I work harder, take tables when everyone else wants to go home, take the tables the other girls just "don't want to deal with" and consequently do more work, I leave with more money then them.
I like that.

This makes me happy, as I am often putting out more work- compare this to when I worked retail and you had a bunch of lazy people not doing their jobs, which left more work for me- while we got payed the same.

ETA- my actual paychecks normally range from 0.00 to 20.00, Since taxes are taken out of them.

Why am I asked to contribute for a gift for the class teacher at Christmas and the end of the year.  Teachers in my area get paid quite well, and more than I do, and get all the benefits that go with a professional's salary.

Perhaps because the teacher is someone who often spends more time with your child than you do a day? I did it because it was a nice gesture.

Why should I tip the postal worker? Unless he does something unusual (walks through the snow and ice to deliver my mail). The rule is, if your mailbox in obstructed, you don't get mail. I have always gotten the "certified slip" in my mailbox to pick up a piece of at the post office even when I've been home, he didn't try to deliver and get a signature.

Then you should be complaining instead of tipping. You do have that option. How often do you "tip" him? I just give a gift at christmas.

quote:

I've gone a hairdresser, and (I believe calculated because I was a good tipper), would have someone shampoo, then he'd do the cutting, then ask me if he wouldn't mind having another person do the blow drying because he was backed up. The person who did the blow drying kept whipping the chair from side to side and have me contort forward and back (didn't move a muscle herself) - so therefore I'd need to tip three people for one haircut. (yes, I still did the tipping, but found another hairdresser eventually).

Which is why customer service in such a setting can cost... sometimes towards the benefit of a great hair dresser and sometimes against them. I hate moving for that reason. It can take me years to find a great hair dresser. Last time I went, I was there for three hours for a cut color and style. I never got pawned off onto someone else. My hair cost me 70 dollars.. pretty cheap, actually... and I wont go back. She just didnt "wow" me. I tipped her ten and left without making another appointment. It wasnt her performance that I didnt like, it was the outcome.

My first one I had for 15 years. Melinda was fantastic. Told me what would work, what wouldnt, and didnt mind telling me "no". He advice was invaluable. And fix ups were never questioned, or charged for. I called, never had trouble getting my appointments, she would always make room, and sometimes she would cut other's hair between working on mine. Spiral perms were the rage and... with waist length hair, it would take her an hour just to roll mine.

I've also heard stories from servers of the "Thank you - and thank you again" on the bill. Watch the automatic gratuity charge on bills, often the server will scrawl an embellished "Thanks for coming here, Steve" over his little part of the bill so many people will tip on the entire bill that already included the tip.

I have seen this... and I will specifically ask not to have that person again. You do have that option. You have the option to question any charge on a bill, including tip. As for myself, I always circle that part in red, write next to it, "Tip included, thank you!" and inform the customer at the table who is paying by leaning in close, handing them the book and whispering the percentage of tip included already for "his" convenience. Anytime during the process he can, and some have, questioned that charge.

quote:

I've seen gas attendants that have tip jars now and a sign "Tips are appreciated". Sorry, unless you've done something other than pump the gas (or simply just taken the money, most are self-serve here), no tip is going to you.

Which is why I dont tip at counters. I may drop in the coins from change, but even that is rare.

Wait staff have also been known to "do things" to your food or drink and have the last laugh. So, think twice about ordering your pizza from the same place you've stiffed the last driver - you don't think they've talked?

Thats just unfair, and has not been the practice at any restaurant I have worked at during my 30 years as a waitress. Those movies are cute, but not the norm.

I work(worked, will work again) on average 35-40 hours a week.
Those are bi-weekly paychecks.
I really do live off the tips.

Um... Not sure. : /

Crumbs, that would be enough to end my *shopping experience* with ANY store.

I'm always worrying about money, never have QUITE enough to go round comfortably but bugger that for a game of soldiers.

Being pleasant and helpful must be just the standard around here. Even in the stores I don't like , such as Tesco, the staff have always helped me pack my bags.

eta.. It's encouraged to bring your own bags here too. In fact you get rewarded for doing so. But if you forget, there still are free bags.

agirl

Many people are pleasant and helpful simply because that is their personality. Many do so in the service industry because they see the money potential in being so. O have customers who love that after just a few visits, I know them by last name, I know what they like to drink (alcohol or not) That there may be a specific section they prefer to sit in, that when I train a new person, this information is passed along to the new person in front of the customer, that I remember any problems with their dining experience the last time and double check to ensure it doesnt happen again, that I remember if someone had an allergy, if someone didnt like someting in particular.... I have a gentlemen who tips me 50 dollars when he comes in with his friends because I remember what wine they had last time with each course and what they did or did not like. That I can look at a table of regulars, see their drinks are low, and grab refills even when their table isnt mine that night. That I remembered a child was going to camp because he was so excited about it... and that I remembered when I saw him next 6 weeks later to ask him about his adventure. That I remember a 3 year old who comes in and likes extra wasabi on all his rolls. That if they like extra sauce, and they forget, they dont have to worry because I will remember.

Yes, I have seen many terrible servers in my life time, both from the table and from the back... but they are not the norm. Those who dont remember, those who dont care, those who are just there for the money, dont last too long. Its a hard job.

My mother is a postal worker. Tips are not expected, but every year at Christmas time she gets massive amounts of presents in the form of money, giftcards, and edibles. She is an awesome postal worker though, and the people on her route love her as she will go out of her way to get people their packages, talks to the people on her route to know when they are not in town so she can hold their mail, delivers to mailboxes that are blocked unless it is a regular thing she has asked about and been ignored on, etc...
She in no way asks for these Christmas gifts, other then being amazing at her job, though she does love them ^^ And shares them with her T6(person who runs her route on her day off).

I want a hairdresser like that! Would just love to go to someone who I trusted and tell them to have their way with me...
I got a haircut a few weeks ago, didn't think much of it at the time, but when it dried later and I started looking at it, I loved it! So even though I had already tipped her, I went back, gave her another ten, and told her how much I loved it and she had better be findable next time I need a haircut!

Ahem... much as I hate to disturb such myths, as they can scare some people into tipping decent instead of crappy- I have never seen this happen at any well run restaurant I have worked at. Mad as we may be, no asshole customer is worth losing our jobs over, and being caught at something disgusting WOULD result in immediate termination.

Do you pay tax on tips? ie, Do you have to declare them on a Tax Return?

Ouch- i think I understand the question now, and at mine I think they can only tax credit card tips, not based on checks.
They just threaten to audit if you don;t "declare" atleast 10 %.

Yes, if you dont declare 10% of your sales as tips, you can be "audited". Imagine a nationwide audit of every server... lol

The way it works at mine is... all credit card tips are recorded and taxed. At the end of the night when I clock out, a thing pops up on the computer that asks me to declare how much I made in cash tips, which is then also taxed.
The taxes are taken out of my paychecks, which are 2.73 an hour, and if I have had a decent two weeks and claim most of it, can reduce said paychecks to nothing.
It sucks a bit because the paystubs tell me how much I made before taxes(in regards to a paycheck), which is normally anywhere from 130-150 every two weeks, and then it shows fed withholding takes this much, SS takes this much... til it is at 0 or sometimes, happily at a bit more. [>:]

If you are cashed out at the end of the night... even on credit cards, then your check can be that small after so many hours.

If they hold credit card tips until you get your paycheck, then your check will be higher.

Either way, you are still paying taxes on those credit card tips as income, and adding any cash tips you delcare on the way.

I have literally gotten a paycheck for 19 cents.

Ok, this isn't making sense to me.

Here, a single person can earn £7,475 before paying a single penny in tax.

Don't you have tax thresholds? How does this work?

Not really, agirl. Everyone pays in. You can get some of it back at tax time, but typically I end up breaking even and never see that back.

Let me adjust that by saying up to a certain point... like maybe 50 dollars, you may not pay anything in federal taxes. almost always we pay in state taxes.. and FICA will always be paid.
