So a question for those in the service industry.

We usually tip on the credit card, but but all I've read here I was wonder if it would be better to tip cash.

Does the government have an accurate amount on what you've been tipped if it's on the credit card, and not when it's cash?

The reason I'm asking is this: we tip much more than what the government assumes is tipped on a bill, and I'd rather see the extra go to the server than to taxes. If tipping on the credit card slip we make that impossible, we'll tip in cash from now on, so that there is a little extra wiggle room for them to declare to have gotten less than what we actually left.

If the server is being honest in reporting their tips (in order to avoid an audit later) then it doesn't matter they're tipped. If the server isn't all for reporting his full tip amount (and risking being audited later) then cash would be preferred. When I was working as a waiter, the manager said "Look, I can't force you to report accurately. All I can say is that an audit is NO fun and the IRS will get theirs no matter what. So it's up to you what you report."

And if they don't deliver, they don't sell pizza. Simples.

Actually it's not. There was a booming pizza industry long before home delivery. If they don't deliver, the lazy masses have to get up off their asses and go get it themselves.

SO long as a server declares 10-15 % of tips, I have never seen an audit.
They seem to save the audits for the dumb bitches who declare 0 all the time.
ETA
Than again, those same dumb bitches are normally bad servers who get low tips anyways, unless they go to hooters.

Perhaps, but the threat is always there. I reported all mine just in case. I still did 'ok.' But as I got older 'ok' wasn't good enough.

Ishtarr -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/25/2011 4:35:05 PM)

Great to know. We'll be tipping in cash from now on.
I'd rather give them the opportunity to pocket the extra than have them pay extra taxes.

So did I!

I personally am a bit irritated at all they took out for social programs- and now that I am on temporary disability, which is one of the things I thought it went towards, I get 95 bucks a month.
I could have saved all that money myself and been way ahead... as well as supporting several others and STILL be ahead.

Actually, by under reporting, you are only hurting yourself. FICA is based upon total earnings. By not declaring it all, it makes your earnings appear less, so your benefits will be less.

But, imagine the IRS doing a mass audit of all servers. They dont have that kind of man power.

What they look at is the paychecks and the total tip out of all employees for a business. They will do a business wide audit. The warnings are merely to keep the business out of trouble if the business is audited.

What benefits?

tazzygirl -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/25/2011 4:54:49 PM)

Social Security

Many people wonder how their benefit is figured. Social Security benefits are based on your lifetime earnings. Your actual earnings are adjusted or "indexed" to account for changes in average wages since the year the earnings were received. Then Social Security calculates your average indexed monthly earnings during the 35 years in which you earned the most. We apply a formula to these earnings and arrive at your basic benefit, or "primary insurance amount" (PIA). This is how much you would receive at your full retirement age—65 or older, depending on your date of birth.

Forgive me.. when I say SS and Medicare, I mean FICA. Only SS, at this time, is income based.

I generally prefer to tip in cash as well.

However, sometimes you can (or may want to) tip on a card as well.

I kinda have a scale for how much, and how I tip (thinking specifically about restaurants here):

1. Very poor or disinterested service by the server (this doesn't count if there's a problem, and it's not their fault.  When in doubt, assume it's not their fault): Something under 10%, generally in cash or card.

2.  Barely adequate service.  Not anything worth complaining about simply because it's not worth the hassle, and I don't plan on coming back.  Generally, some of all of the dining experience was less than an enjoyable experience: 15% (to the penny) on the card.

3.  Good service (the minimum required to see me ever return).  20-25% cash.

4.  Above average service:  25-50%, cash.

5.  Outstanding service: 50-100% cash.

Occasionally, since I know that any tip on a card will be reported, I will "overtip" if I don't have enough cash, or the right bills for a tip, so that the tax man's bite comes out of the "over" part.

On the other hand, by tipping just the 15% on a card, I know that the tax bite will make it less than the minimum 15%.  But that's the message I'm leaving.

Pizza delivery companies deliver pizza.
Sorry you're struggling with the concept.
If I choose pizza, I'm already being lazy. I want it delivered, that's part of the whole convenience angle to it. If I want something better, I go out to somewhere nice or cook it myself. I don't 'go out' to pizza joints.
Having a Chinese or Indian meal delivered is slightly different.
It's been cooked in a restaurant, not compiled on a production line.

tazzygirl -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/25/2011 9:13:50 PM)

lol.... I work in a Pan Asian Restaurant... you might be surprised at what constitutes " cooked".

Pizza Delivery.... What would anyone expect from a job advertised as Pizza Delivery? I order a takeaway because they OFFER that. They aren't doing me a favour.

They really are. They use their own personal vehicles and gas. They don't get company vehicles. By not tipping the deliver guy you're saying to them "I don't care that you're using your gas and vehicle to spare mine."

I do care that they use their gas and vehicle to spare mine. However, I don't need to tip them to show that I care about them using their equipment. I already pay them to show that I want them to use their equipment. There is a delivery charge on the bill because they are delivering instead of me picking up.

That being said, we ordered pizza again tonight. Domino's warned me that they where extremely busy and it would take a little longer than usual. They quoted me an estimated 30 to 40 minutes before the pizza would get here.

The pizza was here in 20 minutes.
The delivery guy got a 30% tip (cash this time and from now on).
So while I won't tip to show him that I appreciate him doing something I already pay him to do, I WILL tip to show him that I appreciate that he always gets here as fast as he does.

A joke.. well.. almost a joke.. among many servers is this....

There should be a mandatory law that every one in America should have to wait on tables for at least 3 months.

I used to drive cab so I know how important tips are to people who depend upon them. I also know how fucking aggravating it is when someone pulls THIS SHIT on you. I can tell you from experience that this is nothing new, those “Christians” of a evangelical bent were always giving out those stupid tracts instead of a real tip, thinking that they were actually doing you a favor (I took them home and put them in the bathroom as an emergency toilet paper supply… ya know, in case I get snowed in by a blizzard or something).

The Jehovah Witnesses were the worst of the lot. Those bastards NEVER tipped (at least with the evangelicals you got the stupid tract) True story: Low on change one day I was unable to come up with the last five cents owned to some Jehovah’s. Did they say, “oh, never mind,” and leave it at that. Nope. I actually had to go out of my way (wasting my time and thus not earning any money because we worked on commissions) to a store and make change for those cheap bastards so that they could have their stinking nickel. A FUCKING NICKLE!!!!!! Cheap fucking bastards! [>:]

Christians of a more liberal bent tended to be more generous… the Unitarians were the best.

Other lousy tippers:

Welfare recipients.

Country club people (the members, not the employees).

Canadians (sorry to my Canadian friends here on CM but the truth must be told).

Teen agers.

Social security recipients.

I can understand someone on a fixed income giving no more than the standard amount but I don’t care what a persons situation is… if you can’t give a decent tip, don’t engage the service. These people need their tips.

And folks, I’m far from rich myself but I pride myself on being a generous tipper and I implore everyone to do the same. Make someone’s day… especially if they look like they’re over worked and are having a lousy day.

Marc,

I'll tell you a secret....

I travel a lot.

#1, I always tip 30%, cabs, restaurants.....those people work hard...and......for me. (Unless I get shitty service, and then I tip 15%...but I never go back).

#2. I love Christianity, I doubt Christians (and I am one),

#3.  I own 3 company's and I've been ripped off by more (in this order) Christians, Doctors and Lawyers.

Sorry bud...there are some folks out there that respect what you do and are thankful for it.

You're the one who's struggling. Let me help. There are no "pizza delivery companies." There are pizza companies that decided to incorporate delivery into their concept years ago. They were doing quite well up until then and simply wanted to continue their expansion.

And you pay for that convenience -- hence tipping the person who's bringing it to you.

Pizza isn't 'compiled on a production line.' I've worked in a pizza place and I've ordered from one where you get to stand there and watch it being made. Even the dough is made there on site. It's not simply shipped to them.

The delivery charge goes straight to the company. Not one penny is given to the driver. It's one of the great misconceptions of the business.

And if everyone followed that mindset, there'd be no drivers because they'd not be making enough money to justify the cost of filling their own gas tanks nightly.

Since Ishtar got her pizza in 20 minutes I'm guessing Domino's does.
