"Can you get pregnant from nasal sex?"
"No, I don't think so."

What is the real medical reason for sounds, anyway?

The instruments often referred to as sounds in the BDSM community are actually Pratt style uterine dilators.  The mix up isn’t their fault, BDSM vendors have been mislabeling dilators as sounds for many years.

Being that I used to work in OB-GYN clinics, I know that both sounds and dilators are used in a D&C (dilation and curettage).

Uterine sounds have graduated markings along a thin shaft and a teardrop or bulb tip.  They are used to measure the depth of the uterus.  The bulb at the tip is to prevent puncturing the uterus.

Uterine dilators do not have graduated markings and are either a single tapered instrument or come as a series of instruments in graduated sizes.

A curette has graduated markings along the thin shaft and an ovoid loop on the end. The loop has a sharpened edged and is used for shaving tissue off inside the uterus.

The doctor probes with the sound to get a measurement.  He dilates the uterus to make room for the curette.  Then he inserts the curette to the desired depth and scrapes back and forth while rotating it to remove tissue.
