It's somewhat interesting to see how uniform the responses have been, compared to when another poster on these boards shared the story of his own encounter with a burglar.

I remember that as well. The poster was vilified for taking the life of another human and all but called a liar. As I recall, there were several different members who went after him. It was a similar post about a home invader with a weapon, but drew a very different set of comments.

Thank you Lucy! I actually had forgotten what a thrashing Ori had taken. A quick re-reading sent my blood pressure up again. At least this instance has not turned so ugly.

I am not saying if this women was right or wrong but has anyone ever had a kid or heard of a kid who went off the rails for a while then realised the error of their ways and settled down to be a decent person?
I reckon quite a few of you know some people like that, maybe some of you know people who have had mental problems for a while but are fine now.
Wouldn't it be a tradegy if those people were now dead?
Every dead body is someones son or daughter, possibly someones dad or mother.
We will never know what that man wanted, he may have just wanted some cash, he may have just wanted to let off some steam, and obviously he may have wanted to kill her and her baby. but we will never know because he is dead.
Most people on CM seem to back the idea that killing anyone who threatens you, or your family or even just your property deserves to die but try for one second to imagine that it is your son or daughter lying dead in a pool of blood, still happy?

Welcome Lady
But FR

Im actually very anti "guns for everyone", for a number of reasons, and while I rarely get into gun right arguments, I do find the good needs to be shown as much as the bad.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/12/3-year-old-shoots-and-kills-5-year-old-in-colorado/
A 5-year-old boy is dead after a shooting inside an apartment Friday morning in Lakewood, Colo., and police say a 3-year-old boy pulled the trigger.
Police said they believe the shooting was accidental, but one of the adults in the apartment at the time, Adam Laham, 23, was arrested on charges of child abuse resulting in death and criminal negligence.
I mention this Just as a balance and why I am so very anti gun ....period.
Im not denying Im glad the lady is alive and well after her ordeal, so please no one put words in my mouth.

I've just read that myself. I didn't see Orion taking a thrashing - some fifty people supported him pretty much wholly. Only a minority of people questioned the truth of his story or put him 'in the wrong' for shooting the burglar.

Its scary tho that she said if it wasnt for the fear she felt for her child, that she wouldnt have shot the attacker.. if she had been alone she might be dead now herself.. Women need to get that their lives are more important, important enough to fully defend themselves even if it means killing their attacker, imo..

I'm wondering if her comment may have been the result of depression, and feeling lost/unmoored, as her husband had just died, and her dogs had been killed.

jmo but I dont think so.. I have read comments from women before where they said they would never be able to kill anyone (even faced in this type of situation).. Women are brought up to be nice to everyone, obedient, passive, etc which makes women more vulnerable & puts them at greater risk for rape, abduction, being murdered..

I have to say it's exactly that thought - in relation to my one-time very 'errant' older brother - that looms largest in my head when I hear arguments in favour of gun ownership for householders in the UK.

so its better that the victim be dead instead??? you have no idea what the intent was, I think its a pretty good guess that these guys killed her dogs,.. if they can do that then what value did her life have to them (once they were done with whatever cruelty they had planned)? They spent 21 minutes breaking into her house.. they werent just letting off steam.. imo this was planned, they spent weeks terrorizing her,.. Dont do the crime if you dont like the possible consequences.. especially if you underestimate your victim..

This kind of behaviour doesnt happen overnight.. parents have the opportunity to get their kid help or to get him to straightened out.. If they dont do all they can or if they are in denial then they are also part of the problem.. jmo..

Am I being callous in saying that the sheer incompetence of a burglar who can't break into a mobile home in under 20 minutes - deserves whatever comes to them?

Seriously though, the fact that they went back and forth from door to door seems to imply an intent to harass and terrify.  Combined with the suspicious deaths of her two dogs and you have a pattern of terrorizing that couldn't possibly have led to any happy endings.

Personally, even though I know I could shoot and kill someone if I ever absolutely had to, I know it would forever haunt me.  This young woman already has enough haunting her, I hope that whatever justification she finds in the shootings brings her peace.

As for the assholes who harassed her, maybe they might have repented their evil ways and become good citizens.  Not everyone gets to live long enough to learn from their mistakes.  I have compassion in my hearts for their families, but I definitely do not have any judgement to pass on the poor girl who shot the guy.

no of course it not better that the victim is dead, maybe there is a middle ground where no one is dead?
you are guessing that they killed her dogs then implying that killing a dog is the same as killing a mother and baby, not in my world.
I am just playing devils advocate, could she have gone out of the back door and run away? I don't know, but I do know that when you are dead there is no coming back.

The other side of the coin.. they rape her and kill both her and her baby, the police dont catch them and they go on to become serial rapist killers.. Many serial killers start with killing animals, after all.. again, that could be another possiblility..

I hate doing this but really, could you give us some stats to back up the kill an animal become a serial killer line?

no, i am implying that serial killers frequently start off by killing animals.. and to kill her dogs was a way of terrorizing her.. Do you think they tried breaking in just to steal a few things from her? imo they broke in to torture and rape her and possibly to kill her as well..

She was outnumbered, one guy likely at the front door and assuming there was a back door, the other guy likely there. Imo, she was trapped and knew it, plus she had a child to carry and run with..

I guess they were arrogant enough to not consider the possibility that they might be killed themselves instead.. if not by the young woman, then possibly by the cops.. Do you feel cops should also be all touchy feely when confronted with such attackers?

how many guesses do you want to make? in your opinion this, and that and the other. You are making stuff up to fit your fears
Maybe the cops will make an assumption or two when they see your loved one doing something a bit daft and shoot him or her. Happy?

I have read that in books about serial killers..
"According to the New York Times, "[t]he FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appears in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders"
