Yeah, this bill is a total POS.  I sure hope Congress listens better than they did when they rammed TARP down our throats.

I doubt this law can be stopped: the purpose of politicians always is to screw the voter.

If it goes through, I expect people to move away from the USA-Internet. Who needs the USA?

Europe can start its own Europenet and people in the rest of the world could then switch their web from the USA to Europe. Let's exclude the USA, just like one of them former Soviet republics now excludes the rest of the world.

Or start your own microweb in your own neighborhood. No Internet providers breathing in your neck and no copyright trolls violating the privacy of your communications.

Though he’s not faced with possibly having to sign either bill into law yet, the Obama White House has come out with an official response to the anti-SOPA petitions on Whitehouse.gov. It’s a lengthy rebuttal, but here’s the most important part:

“While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.”

Now, I was tentatively going to title this post with a “Game Over” at the beginning, as this sort of condemnation would indicate that the current bills are now useless as they’d never get his signature, but reading on, I’m not exactly clear on the fine print.

“That is why the Administration calls on all sides to work together to pass sound legislation this year that provides prosecutors and rights holders new legal tools to combat online piracy originating beyond U.S. borders”

So they do want to pass some sort of anti-piracy legislation this year, but one that doesn’t kill the entire internet. Admirable, I suppose, but what does that mean? If the parts of the bills that mandate courts to force ISP to block access to sites are stripped (and indications are that they will be) is that enough for the White House to support them? That’s unclear.

good on one hand but until its demolished, its just a mater of time. I like the thoughts

I like to think of myself as a patriotic American but who the fuck are we to make laws that will impact people in other countries? Has our government become so arrogant and tyrannical that we now think that we have some kind of authority over some poor sap in Provance? London?

I don't care how they dress this up, it's still a pig (I'll explain the reference, if I need to). This is not about stopping piracy in any way. It's about allowing a federal government that's run amok a foothold in censorship. It is a "little step" to get us on the path to accepting Big Brother's complete control of our lives. Saying that it's about piracy is the "spoonful of sugar".

It's disgusting that we have come to this. If President Obama signs this, he will have done more to kill the first and fourth amendments than President Bush and President Clinton, combined.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Uh, no, it mostly about allowing media companies to control content on the interne.

There are real problems for content providers here, it's hard to sell media content when it's pirated within minutes of it's release, but the shutdown process in this bill is iffy, these things tend to get politicized, and the trend, particularly on the right, has been to pack every government agency with ringers from the industry they're supposed to regulate, this is not good, industry already has input in the form of lobbyists.

There needs to be a relatively impartial body to make and review these decisions, not a bunch of party or industry hacks, all the big search engines already filter searches, you have no idea what content is being blocked if you never even know it's there.

ITC can't handle the workload? Increase funding for the ITC.

this is just the latest in a long battle of cancelled bills, Obama has come out against it
if he doesnt follow thru?yeah hes pretty much done.in my nsho
the fact that congress has a repub majority and not enough senators are onside just yet, ..it may well come down to him refusing to sign it.
But that is just a wait and see.
Im not speculating, Im protesting
Ive done what I can, its something that will affect me if it goes thru.
Its a shame more people dont see just how bad it will affect everyone even on this board
refuse to come out against it JUST because of their hate of obama.

Some sites aren't going down but they are like blacking out their logos and stuff like that -- i.e., google has a big black box over the Google logo saying something congress please don't censor the web with a link, fet has a big x over their main page photo saying censored by SOPA or something like that and offering a link to their stance.

And craigslist comes up with a page that gives you a spiel against SOPA/PIPA, and won't let you into the site for 30 seconds or so.

Fet has a clickable banner on top.

Well if you have automatic sign in you won't see it, you have to log out and then go to their home page.  They do have the feeds however down for maintenance which i don't know if its part of all this or not -- i don't think it is.  grins, part of the plan is to frustrate a lot of people i think so they do something but if they aren't explaining it, then its kind of moot to redact the message.

I just went to google before reading this and saw the black box. I assumed my computer had gliched and didn't pay any attention. Now I find out they were trying to make a statement. Personally I don't see the ones responsible for the bill caring if they can or can't get onto some web sites, but I supposed it's better than doing nothing at all.

Oh please. We make laws that impact people in other countries continually, and have done so for centuries. And yes, our government has felt that way for a long, long time.

Rant aside, how exactly is addressing piracy "censorship"? As for complete control, the Internet runs of federal infrastructure--it has had complete control from the start, if it wanted/wants; it could turn off in a second.
