It would be really tough to draw the line, and would probably be another big kerflufle, although at least we would not be holding so many lives hostage on the result. I do think that on that you have to give some credit to parents, and let them choose for themselves. A defect that we might consider minor, such as down syndrome, might still be too much for a poor single mother to handle, while another family with more resources might choose to have a child with no arms or legs and love and care for him/her. Note, I am absolutely not going to agree with sex choice abortions, etc. That said, I think my family has more right to talk about this than most pro-life folks. My sister is adopted, a refuge from China's "one-child," policy. Her adoption (at 12 or 13, we are not completely sure what her age was because of the circumstances of her transfer to the orphanage) meant one less abortion in China. How many pro-life folks can say that?

You cannot enslave the unborn therefore you cannot franchise the unborn, and in law the unborn do not exist as a "legal" PERSON. They are however a living child, fetus whatever. Peace and comfort, Michael While I kinda agree with you, (and btw your reasoning applies to many uses of the morning after pill too), I think family planning as broadly understood includes planning for what you do after you make a mistake. I can provide financial planning for someone who forgot to pay their car insurance and then totaled their car. It would certainly have been a lot cheaper and better all around if they either had paid for insurance, or not driven without, but that doesn't mean it is too late for me to help them. At the end of the day, either we force women to raise children they don't want, and don't feel they can take care of, or we do not. I suspect that the world where we do isn't a picnic for either the mothers or the children involved. Then again, some people argue that it is better to live a life of misery than not to have lived at all... (and don't bother talking about adoption as an alternative to abortion, unless the adoption agency agrees to pay all medical bills, wages for lost work, liability insurance for future costs of the birth and if requested provide a C-section a few weeks early to reduce strain on the mom).
