In an interview today the President said the following

OBAMA: I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.

I wonder when the people so opposed to it will see that "equal rights" means equal for all, not just to the people who think, act and do as you say...or your church says.

He's pandering for votes, nothing else. He was against gay marriage before he was for it.

He was never against civil unions.  Obviously he has come a little further down the line in his thinking.

It ain't like he was all the way one way then another.  What would be a Romney style flip-flop.

Calling Obama a panderer I'll except that bit damn what's that make Romney who has been on both sides of damn ear every issue. Could it be that like the rest of the country Obama has slowly changed his belief? The thing is the what's the argument against it? It's an equal protection issue. Gays like starights should have the right to civil marriage licenses.. No one is going to or can make a church marry them

Yeah, like last fall and winter's republican "cavalcade of gay states" wasn't?

Lemme tell ya, once they figured out the rest of the base wasn't happy about New york... they made that issue go the fuck away fast.

Course at least you're showing consistency with your hypocrisy.

A conservative, a liberal, a libertarian and a mormon walk into a bar.

This is political. He thinks gays should be able to marry, but he doesn't feel the need to actually do anything about it... It's a states rights issue to him. If he really believed it was a civil rights issue, why isn't he backing serious federal legislation to protect the poor unfortunate LGBT community from the evil religious nutters?

All he has said is basically that he thinks that maybe it would be kind okay if everyone could marry who they want to, but he's not going to force people to respect their rights. You know... like with child labor and slavery, women getting to vote, and abolishing the Jim Crow laws.... Gays marrying gays just isn't worth the effort to him.

"Um, uh. My teleprompter tells me that I believe gays and lesbians should get to marry, but, um... and I'll fight for gay and lesbian rights! Unless of course, the people in your state keep banning gay marriage and I still get your Electoral College votes!"

This is why he is an ineffectual and embarrassing President.

Thats sort of the point. He has no policy, and there is nothng to celebrate. Obama is proving once again that he's an empty suit.

If he can pass health care, surely he can come up with a bill to introduce to Congress on Gay marriage. He nothing and he is offering nothing...

You don't seem to know much about politics yourself...

Whatchya say we shine a little light on the pandering thing and watch Mitt try pandering to BOTH in 2011

Course... he's had a WIDE STANCE on the issue in the past ... take 2006 for instance:

Then there's the famous misread of the NH Vietnam Vet....

http://youtu.be/fShnC2SQc94

Yeah, be concerned with Obama.

Yeah, read your constitution pal, he doesnt come up with bills. He is telling you now that he is for gay marriage, and I doubt he has given his last speech on the subject.

In fact, I expect to see the words...

I urge congress to support and pass legislation.........

Before his next term expires..........

You are entitled to your opinion.
Is the president not entitled to his opinion?
Your post seems to be saying that you do not approve of gay marriage and you want the president to be more forceful in his beliefs...why?

Why should he? If they harm anyone physically as a group based on some doctrine, it's a hate crime. And that's already been on the books long before Obama held any office.
And like say they just want to their free speech and call gay people "damned" or whatever? Not much we can do about that. Hell we even have nut jobs come here occasionally and call the women vile names for their stance on certain issues.
The right wing are the ones turning this into a farce. Who for instance pushed the legislation in NC?

What y'all are missing is that after Biden gave his full support to same-sex marriage on Sunday and White House press secretary Jay Carney flubbed the follow up question the next day, Obama needed to take a stand one way or the other.

His support is actually anti-pandering as it has more potential to alienate the independents he needs to cultivate.

Because marriage laws have always been state matters.

The only thing the federal government needs to do is repeal/overturn DOMA and await the inevitable equal protection lawsuit just like the one that ended miscegenation laws in 1967.
