Status: offline 		We have three cute little monsters.

One elder statesman Somali and 2 Egyptian Mau's who are only 2. The Mau's breeder visited recently. Our Mau's have a cat flap and suffer the outside enviroment. The girl got stuck in a Oil bunker in the first few weeks and had to be rescued and the boy has a scar on his nose from a rat and massive scar on his leg from where he ripped it open on who knows what.

However the breeder was amazed at how much fitter and muscled our pair were compared to another from the same litter she kept. They're considerably heavier as a result. This despite having a huge outdoor run at her place and being fed exactly the same.

Cats may be happy for them inside but I live in Kitty heaven.... and yes I've lost Cats to Fox, Hunters and those that just disapeared.

And please no-one even mention de-clawing. Or amputation of the first joint of the paw as it actualy is...

Status: offline 		I would have to think that LaT was referring to the bad information that was stated regarding fleas.  Cats absolutely do pick up fleas.  In fact, the most common specie of flea is called the cat flea, even though it infests both cats and dogs.

Also, the notion that someone who lives in a climate that hits -40 shouldn't own a cat is ridiculous.  Let Me guess.  Some would suppose it's better to abandon the cat outdoors should the humans actually move from one region to another.

Status: offline 		More of a dog person myself. My youngest Tervuren killed one of the broiler chickens this week. Fortunately, my love was able to wrest it from his jaws, and we had chicken for dinner last night!

Well, suffice it to say, I would not want rats in my bed. I think I can say that quite definitively.

Status: offline 		I have, at this precise moments, three white, but not blind, mice sleeping in a terrarium on the kitchen table. They have been there for over six hours. The cat hasn't even looked sideways at them. She would starve as an outdoor cat.

I was only speaking of personal experience in every case. If you think that others' personal experience is fact whereas mine is only "bad information" then that's your call. So be it.

And further, I never stated that someone owning a cat in a -40 environment shouldn't own a cat, just that such owner had no business telling others what was "cruel" or not regarding cats. How selfish it is to take a cat so unsuited for that element, then tell others they are "cruel" for letting their cats out in an environment more suited to their nature, where their true spirit is allowed the freedom they are made for.

I understand that there are situations where the cat is best left completely indoors. I do not think it is "cruel" to do so, considering their adaptability.

But anyone who claims that it is "cruel" to let the cats be in their true element, and then further judge badly those who do so needs to be enlightened, to say the least.

Status: offline 		Edwynn, you are an idiot. I live in Canada. We have something called winter here. It can at times get fucking cold. Should there be no cats allowed in Canada just because we have extremes in weather?

Oh, and check with LadyPact about her weather conditions, she is further north than I am.

A tattoo on the inside of the ear doesn't necessarily mean your cat came from a breeder. It may have been involved in some form of criminal activity at some point and very likely escaped from incarceration.

I would recommend, for your own safety, that you visit the nearest vet or pet shelter and look at the wanted posters to be sure. And for the record, while I realize this is not entirely well disseminated information, if the first letter is an "M" or the number "6"....your cat was involved in a federal crime.

Status: offline 		How many cats does that mean that you've owned over your lifetime?  Now, take that number and divide it by the number of flea collars, treatments, etc that are sold each year, and then tell us of your great personal experience and knowledge about cats and fleas.  You do understand why people think that was an idiotic opinion, don't you?  I'm glad that you've never had to own a cat that picked up fleas.  Just consider yourself lucky, Edwynn,  You didn't get an infestation that every dang vet out there treats cats for when it happens.

Status: offline 		Ear tattoo is usually a sign of them being desexed (spayed/neutured). Most breeders wouldnt want their cats tattooed.

And yes, fleas are a PITA.

Status: offline 		Here you can have your animal tattooed whenever you want, regardless of spay/neuter status. The tattoo simply identifies the clinic and year the animal was tattoed. It has been widely used for identification before the chip system came into being.

Status: offline 		Oh okay. I just know that breeders rarely do because in the event you wish to show the cat, it can't be shown if it has a tattoo (or at least points are deducted).

(My cat is from a breeder.. not that it makes her any more special. And microchipping is mandatory in Australia for all cats & dogs over 8 weeks old).

Yes, you and LadyPact read that I disallowed ownership of cats by anyone north of whatever parallel, while no one else in this thread, (i.e., competent readers) did so.

Even in the upper Midwest and in Canada, there are reading comprehension improvement classes available.

Please take advantage of them.

Fleas have apparently been an increasing problem. I am not denying your own experience, but your overt hostility interferes with rational discussion.

Maybe it's just the discrepancy between dogs and cats (in my own experience), or maybe because my family was in fact "just lucky," but we never had a problem with fleas in the '60's through '80s of cat ownership. All my experience from '90s onwards has been with feral cats, but I never had a serious problem with fleas.

Again, I don't understand the hostility here. I did in fact have my last experience with a domestic cat I inherited from my departed mom. It is most certainly possible that I am not completely aware of all the shots she had, other than to say that she hadn't got any of them in four years and had no fleas. Just as my several feral cats into my living space didn't cause such problem, obviously no shots there.

I'm not saying that cats never carry fleas, I am not denying your experience. I just do not understand the hostility to an experience different than yours.

This whole question of how "cruel" humans might or might not be towards cats obviously has more to do with human 'ownership' of cats than it has to do with any concern towards nature.

The domestic cat I inherited from my mom was de-clawed, as she inherited it, but the insistent cat still found a way to bring more than a few mice to the step porch, and on few occasions, into the house. It is impossible to not love such a sweety as that, if you know anything about cats. She loved whoever wanted to be beside her, and let her into the house, even if at times she stayed away for two or three days. She felt the freedom to stay away however long she wanted because she was so secure in the humans she was associated with always being there, without fail.

All that "bless her heart" stuff, you know.

Insulting us only makes you look small minded. Either that or there has been too much inbreeding down in your part of the world. There is a great book you should read called How To Win Friends And Influence People. You certainly could do with some advice in these areas.

I never claimed that someone who took a cat to -40 below didn't have a "right" to do such a crazy thing, only that any comment from such a person should be considered in that light.

You came onto the discussion of your own accord, no one forced you to do so. When you fall completely short of understanding the simplest of statements, by telling me that I was an idiot because I said that no one in that environment should have a cat, when in fact I never said such a thing, do not complain or consider it an "insult" when it is pointed out to you that you completely miscomprehended the simplest of statement.

You have a lot to learn. Get used to it, if you ever want to get to a level beyond the domesticated cat.
