Status: offline 		I have a serious problem with an un-neutered tom cat one of my neighbours has, it's super aggressive and attacks my cats, my dogs and even goes for humans (rabies is not an issue in the UK), after getting a massive scratch on my arm and checking with the authorities, the neighbour could try to drag me to court if I nap her cat and have it neutered, but in that case I could then (because I told her several times and requested that she neuters it and quite a few people saw her cat acting aggressively) claim the vet costs I had because of her cat (abscesses my cats had and they needed to be drained and treated) and/or give her the choice of me reporting the cat as aggressive and a danger.

I now only need to find a way to trap the cat without losing a limb, and preferably without the neighbour noticing it (I'd rather not risk bricks through the window or poisoned food over the fence to my dogs) and then have it neutered, any clever ideas?

Status: offline 		contact the RSPCA. They should have humane traps you can use. Or look into cat rescue organisations.

Status: offline 		Any kind of humane trap in your back yard with a little regular food in it and an on call vet. Explain the situation when you call ahead and find one that's willing to do it on a last minute basis.

The risk you take is being seen or having the trap seen and your neighbor taking revenge.

Is there any way you can convince your neighbor to let you just pay for a neuter and you both go on your merry way? Try to approach the subject as non aggressively as you can and act like she is doing you a HUGE favor by letting you deal with this issue.

Bad neighbors are a pain in the ass and sometimes it feels like no matter what you do or say you're going to make the problem worse. But living with a situation thats upsetting is just as bad. Mr and I had a bitch for a neighbor for years and when the situation finally exploded (I'll tell you the story in CMail if you're interested) there was no repairing the "relationship" she just became a worse bitch and I was miserable over it until we finally moved.

That btw is also an option, though probably the most extreme one...you can always move

Status: offline 		I have offered to pay to have her tom neutered, she thinks it's not "natural" and it's just how cats behave...

Checked with the RSPCA, problem is there is a long waiting list for the traps, I think I would have to keep the tom in the garage over night, vet said they can always make it happen on the same day (my vet totally supports me on that, as she said a non-neutered cat is a serious danger and will not just father lots of unwanted kittens but also a lot of diseases) as it's a fairly simple and easy surgery, anaesthetic and snip.

I figured I can have the trap in the backyard, get the cage into the garage, have the car in front of the house and put the cage with a blanket over it into the car parked in the front, her front door faces away from her property...

The problem is really just getting the damned trap, can I improvise with something and build a trap myself? I don't think I have the patience to wait another couple of weeks

Status: offline 		I just sent other half an email, for some obscure reason Amazon refuses to let me log into my account, tried to get the password reset, but they seem to have a problem with the site.

Definitely getting the feral cat one for £31 (£25 plus £6 delivery), I called a farm shop but they only have rat and rabbit traps and not the humane ones, £40 for the procedure including aesthetics, so with roughly £70 not much more than treating one abscess on one cat costs, bargain...

Don't get caught!

You know, your alternative is just to catch the poor thing and turn it in to the SPCA and feign innocence if your neighbor questions you. It would have been just as likely that the cat got hit by a car or picked up or something.
I just worry that you're going to get this tom it's little gems snipped and drop it back off and your neighbor will know exactly who got that done.

Status: offline 		I feel for your situation but if it were me, i would not get into doing something that could make the neighbor an enemy & start World War 3.. I would take a different approach and simply put up or add a cat fence (either back yard or both front & back) to keep the offending kitty & others out.. Imo, you could even use these designs to make your own.. jmo..

Status: offline 		I actually feel really sorry for the cat, so I don't want to hand the cat over to the RSPCA, while she seriously is not an ideal owner, it might be better than the cat sitting in a cage and being put down because nobody will want the stroppy manky cat.

Well, there are several people in the area who had "discussions" with her because their pets were attacked or her lovely tom marked the washing they had out to dry and other such "niceties", it attacked the toddler from the woman further down the road who had a massive rant at the owner, so there is a fair chance that she can't decide who to suspect. My only regret is that I can't have the stupid b*tch done with the cat, because she's one of the people who shouldn't have animals. In the 5 years I've been living here she went through 7 cats and 3 dogs. The male cats are not neutered and tend to stray and get run over, she's on the 3rd dog now and I feel so sorry for the dog, in dogs she has females and she also doesn't have them neutered, the previous 2 died of cancer of the reproductive organs - for her normal because she doesn't believe in neutering animals... Don't get me started...

I got cats myself, so it wouldn't work and seriously, I don't want to change the house into a fortress because of the stupid bint. We changed the cat flap to an electronic one about 3 years ago to stop her previous unneutered tom from coming into the house and pissing everywhere, there is a good deal of communal ground that is shared between the houses in the same close, you can't really sit there (it's a nice little sun trap) without whipping down the benches her darling has marked, if you're a bit unlucky you are sitting in the sun and that freaking cat comes and goes for you or pisses over you...
The fence would also mean my cats are fenced it, they're neutered and quite shy when it comes to strangers, so I can't really see them attacking anybody.

I basically reached the point where I'm boiling, what might be an idea would be to talk to the other neighbours, who are also seriously pissed off to lay a false trail, aka, during one of our walks we saw your cat at the other end of town...

Status: offline 		Is it possible to just have all the neighbors file as many complaints as possible and get this person banned from owning animals at all?
Here in the US if enough people complain and the offending party gets taken to court, a judge can order them banned from being pet owners. It takes a lot of shit, and the person has to be proven abusive or neglectful, but in the end it's worth it if for no other reason than it's the most humane thing to do for that persons prospective future pets.

Just a thought.

Status: offline 		Wow LC! I do not envy you that neighbour. If the animal is causing that many problems, and she refuses to do anything about it, I would trap it and turn it in. Our SPCA here adopts out animals life that if not claimed, and they are also given away free to farms as mousers. Just you turn him in doesn't it will be the end of him.

She isn't French by any chance is she? The French don't castrate their cats and dogs because they say its not natural but they happily drown the kittens and puppies.

5 years ago I had a similar problem. We had a vicious tom in the neighborhood that terrorized the other local cats. Everyone complained to each other and even to the owner but nothing was done. My female cat then went missing for 2 days. We searched the roads to see if she had been hit, put pictures and notes of her on lamp posts and knocked on neighbors doors to get them to check their garages and sheds. One of the neighbors told me he heard a cat screaming and saw my cat being chased by that vicious tom. Eventually we found her but she was very badly injured and pretty much lifeless.
The vet said she had been hit by a car and to leave her with him so he could check the extent of the damage. He then called me to say, 'this is no road accident, its a cat attack and the cat that attacked her has tried to kill her'. He went on to say, 'this tom cat needs to be put down because even if he is castrated, at this stage in his adult life it wouldn't make any difference.
The vet called the RSPCA but they weren't really interested and so I purchased a cat trap with the intention of catching him but I ended up catching every other cat in the neighborhood except him.
If I had, had a gun I would of shot that cat. My beautiful little girl had to be destroyed because she didn't have the strength to fight the infections she got from her injuries.
I don't know what the answer is but my vet told me that once cats start seriously injuring other cats they get a liking for it and there is no stopping them.

well,... yes i can understand how you feel.. for me, i would have a fence up to keep my kitties in also (if i had kitties today).. but even in the city I have lived where wild animals come, and I have unfortunately heard the scream of a poor cat dying by coyote.. .. where you live is likely quite different.. yes it does make it look a little fortress-like but that is my style, to control what is within my right to control.. its not that i havent thought about doing the same thing (cat napping & fixing) to stray cats tho..

Even if you to take the cat and get it fixed, that might not stop the spraying or even stop the aggressiveness.. When i had 2 male kitties, at 6 months they started spraying and getting them fixed was no guarantee to stop the spraying, lucky for me it did work and was definately worth trying..

Good luck with your plan, I hope it works.. having an irresponsible neighbor like her would drive me nutz..

Status: offline 		She isn't abusive, she just thinks that pets shouldn't be neutered because it's cruel and doesn't get that it's much worse and more dangerous for the pets to not be neutered, and unfortunately you can't force somebody to have the pets neutered unless they are classed as dangerous dogs from a banned breed...

She was all tearful about her female dogs getting cancer, I said that if you don't breed them the risk for them is really high, reply "But it's not natural and I don't have the right to take away the sex", if somebody doesn't get that risking cancer for your dog is a much crueller option, what can you do? She lost so many toms because they stray and get run over,, she still thinks that they had a normal and natural cat life...

Status: offline 		In all reality, the bit of garden we have is not big enough for cats, especially for years they are used to play in the area, they go and visit their cat friends (actually really surprising, cats get along, each of my cats has special friends, always thought they would be more solitary)...

The vet said the spraying is very likely to stop, regarding the aggression we have to wait until the testosterone is out of his system. It's worth a shot, because realistically and the way the houses are build, it would be quite difficult to have the fortress and still blending in, there are quite a few restrictions to the area due to listed buildings...

Status: offline 		That's kind of hilarious, stealing someone else's evil cat and having it neutered behind their back. I wonder if there is a law against neutering a cat without permission?
You can get traps from the animal control people for free if you say a stray bit you. Then you can just return the trap later and say you never caught the stray.

Status: offline 		This is an awful situation. I would do catch it and have no hesitation about getting it neutered. There is also a hormone shot the vet can give the tom during the desexing operation. Might be worth looking into.

I know cat breeders ften give it when they retire a stud, just to help them settle into hormone-free life a little easier.

Status: offline 		Might also want to consider a softgun for warning shots. If you check the spread to make sure you know how far away from the cat you need to aim to avoid the risk of an accidental hit, you'll be able to scare him. At least in my experience. Takes a couple of times before he makes the connection that it's specific to your territory, but at that point he will probably stay out. To the sensitive ears of a cat, those plastic pellets make a pretty loud crack. And if he does attack your 'kids' again, those things are less lethal than a real firearm.

As a sidebar, a tested and correctly used softgun can make for a novel flavor of impact play.
