I shall put on my most serious face for this post, Lady C, so that you may be in no doubt that I'm in earnest and *not* joking in a way that you don't appreciate:

Get one of those big white plastic storage boxes from Wilkinsons - the ones with lids. They're about six quid. In your garage, upturn it, with the lid underneath, and arrange two long sticks to hold the box some eight inches off the ground. Around the sticks arrange a lasso of string. Put some cat food and maybe catnip on the lid and under the box. When this cat comes to feed, pull the string and drop the box on it. Then move swiftly to push the box down onto its lid. Cut a hole in the lid so that the cat can breath.

Take it to a vet who you don't know and give him a false name. Get it neutered, then bring it back and release it.

Couldn't you get the woman fined or something for maybe trespassing even though it's not her, it is her cat or maybe charges of neglect? I can't believe there isn't some kind of law in the U.k. to cover this. Then again when I was in Portugal cats and dogs roamed EVERYWHERE and no one seemed to care. They would even allow them to wander into their shops and restaurants. My daughter and I actually decided to have a little game to count how many we saw in one day lol. Is it the same in Europe where you are? I've been told Italy has the same problem of stray cats.

Actually it is not a stray cat, somebody feeds it more or less regularly and lets the cat into her house, but technically unless the cat has a collar or a chip, I can reasonably assume it's a stray and have it neutered...

Stray cats aren't a big problem in the UK, hence not really any laws, and this cat is freaking psychotic, something fundamentally wrong in the head. I went down as I heard one of my cats screaming in terror, psycho had cornered one of mine, I tried to shoe him away by waving my arms and it launched itself at me and went for my face, I put my arms up and thankfully it's a chilly night and I wore a long sleeved, rather thick cotton shirt, which now features fashionable slashes... I dread to think what would have happened to my face and eyes. We're talking about a cat psycho on roids, fucking cats attacks both of my dogs, and they're really big Dobermans. I love cats and dogs and they usually love me back, but I start to think that it might be called Satan or something like that. Other half (who's not a small guy) walked the dogs the other day and the cat was on the pavement, instead of moving away, the cat got up and started hissing and going towards him and the dogs. It possibly thinks it's a lion or there are some really odd drugs dealt among the cat population.

Uh yeah, and sit all night in the garage waiting? The bugger then would most likely just piss all over the garage and think "Hmm, plastic box and human? I think rather not!" Plus that would mean that I would have to change the electronic cat flat and switch it off... Not such a great idea, we ordered the Amazon trap, seems well worth the investment

Well, in that case, if it were me, I'd go for my spring-loaded gate idea. But for that I'd need to draw a diagram and point you to the exact bits to buy from Wilkinson's.

Yep, as you say, probably best you went for the Amazon trap.

Great. A cat that has been smoking bath salts...

If this is learned behavior for the tom, then all your efforts, expense and risk are going to be a great waste. Even if the cat cannot be seen once trapped, it will very likely create one hell of a racket. If she hears that coming from your yard, it's a dead giveaway about who took her cat. Catch it, take it it the pound in the next county, and tell yourself a lie about it going to a wonderful home if you need to.

And use welders gloves when you handle the trap with the cat in it.

Oh trust me. The full name of Carol's second cat was "Ramie Jean Rat Cat the Devil Kitty" and Carol has the scars to prove it. I had the cat upside down in my arms like a baby in about 2 minutes. The worst was the stray I came across in NJ. Damned thing made me woo it for 4 freakin hours before it gave in. But man, she was the most beautiful black cat I've ever seen and I wanted her. As I said, cats & I get along :)

And I'm just having a bit of cat fun here LadyConstanze... I get the nature of the problem and I agree that the least hassle most likely to succeed solution is a prefab deal. I'd get the cat without a trap but I'd also end up sitting out for hours to get it plus you'd need to buy the airline tickets. It's just gotta be cheaper to ship the trap than to ship me :)

Cats Protection League may be able to help. Although the RSPCA are very good and of course are actualy empowered to prosecute by the courts (ie do not have to go to the police). However the Cats Recue folks are more focused and dont destroy animals unless they cannot be saved...unlike the RSPCA who do destroy animals they cant rehome.

Catching strays is an art form. Spent a summer doing it in Venice and I advise a set of leather gauntlets :-)

A rare Fast Reply...

I frickin' hate cats...! The only place they belong is a "Funniest Home Videos" type show. Go to Ebay and type in cat trap.

Had a real problem with feral strays when I first moved here. Trapped and shot about 80 of them in the first year. And they were awful specimens - some of the males were especially BIG, they stank, were covered in burrs and you wouldn't believe the number of bloated ticks many had around their mouthes and ears etc.

Me, I much prefer the many bright coloured parrots that come in the yard, esp as opposed to bright coloured parrot feathers all over the yard. Since they don't mix, I choose and cats lose....

I have my same two drop traps I made years ago. Basically a largish cage with a drop door held open by a baited trigger arm. Cat goes in, yanks on bait and door comes crashing down behind.... A left-over chop bone is perfect bait or anything with a bone in case days pass without a catch. And check it daily as I've also caught magpies, a kookaburra and even a possum. Just when you thought a cute possum wasn't a meat eater....

My sister was also having problems with ferals so I bought her a couple of traps off Ebay. Not as sturdy as my home-mades and required a bit of assembly but they worked fine - door is even spring loaded and self locks. As for disposal, well my way's a permanent solution.

Caught the neighbour's cat awhile back. So it got a reprieve - and a thorough drenching with the garden hose before I sent it on its way. A few months later it was back again. Another drenching and this time a follow-up sprinkle of curry powder cos cats just lurv licking themselves clean (or dry).... And a few months later again, the cat's not a learner. I was pissed and decided to pop it this time and leave it in the street like roadkill (and for closure). You think the mongrel would go near the trap again??? Ok, it learnt something....

Called them, told them, they said they fully approve of the sterilization and as long as the cat is not chipped, not a problem, asked if the cat has a collar, said no, they said "Good, mind you it could always lose a collar", they're not keen to rehome it as they have more than enough cats on their hands (plus stupid owner would just get a new one) but said they'd give me a voucher and my vet is part of their campaign, usually it's students, pensioners or people on benefits who get the voucher where it costs only £5 to get an animal neutered, but they are trying to get strays neutered and vaccinated to stop them spreading diseases. We agreed that Hitler cat must be a stray... They do have cat traps but actually a long waiting list as well and the deposit for them is more than the Amazon one we already ordered, I might donate the trap to them once done. And yes, already figured that I will not touch the cranky bastard, I like to have both hands and all fingers...

You could try that yourself if all else fails: it certainly doesn't sound like you'd have to worry about anybody else's cats getting into the feral tom's territory and eating it.

They're an environmental and ecological nightmare in some areas. Hundreds of thousands of them are going thru the native fauna like the Tasmanian Devil thru a Buggs Bunny cartoon.

I do know that. Just... being the crazy old AMERICAN cat lady that I am, it was a kneejerk reaction! (and hey, dammit, I was GOOD!! I didn't cal him names or anything!! LOL)

Yeah. If we just neuter every person that seriously mistreats, unnecessarily kills or irresponsibly handles an animal, humanity will be a vastly improved species in about two generations. Burying might be better to reserve for repeat offenders, though. In any case, I think I will enjoy the revised penal code when it enters into effect up here. Something about me legally demolishing a car to stop the owner from running over people's pets for fun strikes me as exceedingly appropriate as a first postwarning measure.
