When we had a cat, trying to keep her indoors was an exercise in futility. Yet to see a better escape artist, or one so brutal for that matter lol

gotcha, LC.

Fortunately, both my current kids were young enough when I got them that "inside" is normal. This does not negate the fact that my comfy armchair is frequently mistaken for a scratch post (yes, I do discourage it, but the spray I use does wear off in a non-specified time frame - or they learn to ignore it after a certain scent level has been breached). To me, it's the price of sharing the joy of CATS in the HOME!! No biggie! I can always get the chair re-upholstered :) I can NEVER replace my individual furbabies.....
and please understand.. I am not dissing you for the choices you have taken in re: your adopted fuzzybutts!

I didn't see it as an attack, just explaining that my cats were used to go outside and really didn't like being kept inside, they were literally bouncing off the walls and seeing that we live in a relatively quiet area without much traffic, I have the liberty of letting them roam, if we would live next to a main road, they'd be house cats.

Our girl, Angelina, has always been vaccinated, until this year. When we went in for her check up and shots, she was diagnosed with kidney failure, and we decided not to overtax her system with the shots. She is a 100% indoor cat, and doesn't get boarded at all.

We also have a cat leash law here, so your neighbour would be in really expensive trouble for having an outdoor cat that comes and goes as he pleases.

not meant as an attack: but I have to ask.

why can't they be indoor cats anyway? if they would still be bouncing off walls in either scenario.. ???

Because they are too used to going outside, they don't go far but they simply enjoy visiting their cat friends or basking a bit in the sun, it would not really be nice to take that away from them, when it would come down to their lives being in acute danger, yes, of course I would keep them inside, then survival would be more important, but they are super active and simply enjoy climbing up and down the trees, one of the houses nearby has a garage with a flat roof, which in summer the "cat beach", as you can see up to 10 of them being stretched out there and sunning themselves, they seem to have a pretty active social life, why would I want to take that away from them? I mean we deliberately picked a place away from main roads and in an area where there are obviously cats (as we could tell from the cat flaps around), there is one cat in the area who's not allowed to go out, and it's quite sad, that cat is always on the balcony, talking to the other cats and I think it's only a question of time until that cat says "sod it" and jumps down...

I just don't want to keep my cats as prisoners in the house and since I don't plan to move to a place next to a busy road, I really don't see a reason to take away something they enjoy... And I can tell you that the month they spend inside when the birds start to fly is quite expensive, because they really really try to tear the place to shreds because they have too much energy.

LadyC, I love the visual of the "cat beach", although I would have problems with that much cat poop!

I've never seen them poop on the sun roof, they are just all the "social" cats in the area, I would assume they all have their litter boxes in their own homes, though not too far away is a completely overgrown piece of land, a house was torn down ages ago but nobody build there, local rumour has it that the heirs are fighting over it, I do have the distinctive suspicion that it's the public toilet of the local cat population as they often seem to head over there and come back after a very short time...

That seems reasonable. We were feeding some stray kittens last month beford we managed to trap them. I have a number of flower pots in the backyard, that have lots of dirt but no flowers. They were all full of poop, even tho we had placed a litter box outdoors for them to use.

Picked up the delinquent from the vet, he's got shots, is de-flead and had the OP, still seems to be a bit groggy, vet also chipped him and put the CPL as contact info on the chip.

Since he's still groggy from the surgery, I sprayed the cage (put him in a dog transportation cage, he can move around there and a litter fits in) with Feliway and put a bit of water in for him, decided to let him recuperate in my garage, if he's still a bit odd, he might cross a street and be run over or injure himself. Also put pillows in where my cats sleep on, so he gets used to the smell of other cats. Vet reported that there were casualties among the staff and they used a dart to tranquilize him, because he got several nurses and one vet (a round of band aids, I guess).

Dunno if it is the Feliway or him being still dizzy from the anesthetic, but I could actually touch him without losing fingers or arms, girlie dog stuck her nose in and started to mother and clean him and I was a bit worried, but he seemed to enjoy it. I possibly need to spray a lot of Feliway around the back and hope that it will calm him down too. He should be fully awake when it's dark and I just let him go then and hope for the best.
