While the grading of Lehrer's performance is preponderantly negative, I thought I'd add this comment.

Jim Lehrer Debate Moderating Performance Savaged

...He also gets points off among the commentariat for allowing himself to be steamrolled by the candidates. Okay, so the guy fails in a test of wills against two men who are putatively the most strong-willed people in the country.

Lerher’s real problem was that, for one night, he hads to play stand-in for the entire American media. And if there’s one thing the American public enjoys, it’s bashing the American media, no matter how it performs.

Talk about not prepared. It was as if he didn't watch the republican primary debates. Romney did the same thing. He also "declared" victory in each. As we know, the "wins" didn't mean shit in the scheme of things.

Romney's vision is: I will focus on job creation by stimulating growth in small business, cutting costs for energy, and repealing the expensive, "rammed down the American's throat" Obamacare program. I won't cut taxes on the wealthy. Job creation will save the nation and repair its fiscal problems, and I will not expand the scope and reach of government into areas where the private sector and individual states can do a better job. Obama's had four years to fix the economy, and he hasn't done it. Reputable think tanks and business organizations support my plan. I got things done in MASS by being bipartisan, I will do the same thing for the USA.

------

On a side note, I find it particularly irritating to hear Presidents talk about fixing America's schools and education. This is way beyond their scope of powers, and this truly is the states' job. Frankly, the Federal government should not meddle in education. Its just a morass of bureaucracy. The most important element in a child's education is its parents, not schools, teachers, or funding. I don't have a solution to this problem, but neither does either President.

The quicker fix is expanding immigration to allow the US to bring in superior talent from overseas -- speaking from an economic development standpoint. Obama should have stood up for the Dream Act, too.

I'm with Heretic, I'm glad Jim Leher let the candidates speak. If the goal was enforcing time limits, there should have been a 30 second warning given and then either a bell or buzzer when time was up.

Romney was really able to distinguish himself. He's a lot more dextrous than McCain ever was. He's 7x more verbal than GWB. He's also been toughened by the hazing he took in the Republican primaries.

I give both of these debates a yawn minus and I haven't seen the one, nor will I see the other.

Besides all the platitudes you listed. Can you give me one solid thing that you know he will do. With details......Anything.

And please, let me compliment you on inventing "facial metrics". It is shameful that Ekman and Friesen, Fredrickson, and Larsen stole this science from you.

What the fuck are you talking about, F? When I flow debates, I score non-verbals. Other judges only went point by point exclusively, or had their own key things to add/deduct on. Is there some sort of problem with that?

Don't attack me, because your guy didn't have a game to bring.

Gee H.eally don't take a tongue in cheek complimemt well at all. I was elevating someone who was claiming proficiency into a strata that is held by the founders/refiners of the science of modern analysis of public speaking in politics. I apologize it was difficult to interpret it that way.
I think perhaps I need to stop responding to remarks where the respondents have a history of being defensive about my remarks enough to include trigger words like attack in their responses.
One should consider that when they make themselves known as challenging people via their sourcing or implying the use informational crutches, or even some sexist remark, one should expect some ribbing back

Lehrer did fine. Those were two big boys up there, not third grade children.

What was beautiful was Romney pointing out with the 90 biilion he threw at green energy sugesting he doesn't pick winners and losers but he picks losers. BURN !!!!!!!

Romney isn't the only one who needs a new accountant. Several independent fact checks have published the detailed accounting of that factual BONER.
But I'm not exactly talking to an 'independent' here, am I?

We replayed the Bush-Gore debates early this morning at the Gloucester democratic headquarters. There was a good deal of interesting dialogue following that.

Ron, I too was.disapointed that Romney decided to just bullshit viewers instead of just trying to win them over with a porn slideshow.

Actually you are talking to an independent. Even if we elected my definition of the perfect candidate I don't think he or she could stop the ultimate crash and burn of our currency.

As for green energy just to give you one example, Solyndra went bankrupt after having secured 500 and what ever it was million down the toilet. This is what I took it to mean picking losers.

I am frankly shocked Romney attacked Sesame Street, considering it's where most of his supporters learned virtually all they know about government.

You can take it to mean whatever but the reality, as Romney's campaign admits, is different.
