That's...my point. Yes, it is arbitrary and ambiguous. I don't want a court deciding which are "good" and "bad" words-- the point of having rights (particularly free speech) is so that nobody else decides for me what words I can use.

I don't think you do, either. There are plenty of people in this country who think that discussing kinky sex, or sex at all, should be outlawed, because it might influence their kiddies.

Sorry... I'm sure I'm misunderstanding something here... You're not intentionally criticising a parent for a) wanting her child to be educated in the mainstream b) having an issue with same child being bullied?

actually, I don't know what you're referring to--I don't recall us "interacting" in the past. And obviously I did miss your point. what did you mean then by the "Pussification" of America?

Descrite--

in the public school system here, not all kids qualify for the schools that specialize in kids with developmental disabilities. In my nephew's case, he is fairly high functioning now (thanks to the meds he takes) and the school has an written plan to accommodate his physical needs/learning needs. Most of his biggest challenges are social interaction with others--the special needs schools here are for those who have more profound developmental and intellectual challenges. my guess is that if the problems continue, his parents will have to find a way to finance private school, although that's no guarantee that he'll do better there.

I wasn't trying to "blame" the children being bullied for being pussies. I was blaming the adults who have decided that teaching children to stand up for themselves is a bad thing. That's what I meant by the "pussification".

We've turned our society into a bunch of erst-while victims, looking for a bad guy to blame their lot in life upon (and sue those who can afford to be sued) instead of teaching them that at the end of the day, you can only count on yourself, your family (and not always them) and maybe a few close friends. After that, no one gives a stuff about your problems.

That's not to say that a majority of us don't want world hunger to go away or gays to be able to marry. It means that when we balance those things against our own issues, we want our issues sorted, first. It's human nature.

I don't blame the children who are being bullied. I blame the people who are supposed to be educating them (both at home and at school) for giving them an unrealistic expectation of a Utopian society that doesn't exist.

If you want to get anywhere in this world, you'll have to "fight" your way through. True enough, as we become adults, hopefully physical violence isn't part of that fight but, as little children, it always has been and always will be.

I understand you not remembering our previous interaction, you were pretty dismissive to me but, in fairness to you, I find that happens quite a bit, around here when someone has the unmitigated gall to express an unpopular opinion.

Yes, I believe you put me on Hide after I called you out on your use of "Femi-Nazi." Do we have to have a similar conversation about the use of the word "pussy" or will you just agree to confine it to female anatomy and cease to use it for a synonym for "wimp" or other derogatory words?

Sheesh.. how was I not understanding that no matter how severely you are being bullied, you MUST stand up for yourself! It doesn't matter if you are being physically, emotionally or sexuallty threatened by your bullies, just stand up to them, all will be fine!

I agree that the educators and parents hold some responsibility--but not because they don't give their kids realistic expectations-- teachers who ignore bullying and allow it to happen share the burden of responsibility, and more importantly, the parents who failed to do their job as parents in instilling decent values in their kids. (those parents who raise bullies) AND those parents who don't support and help their kids who are dealing with it.

I'm sorry that you were so offended by some exchange that was obviously significant to you..and clearly less so to me. Ironic, actually. Perhaps you should...how did you put it? Wipe the sand out and get over it?

Anyway, I think I saw something to the affect that this wasn't really a case of bullying so much as stalking by an ADULT predator. That changes things quite a bit for me:

To expect children to be able to defend themselves against adults that are extremely more "world wise" than those children are is insane. I do feel bad for anyone who feels driven to the point of suicide but, I also know that for some people, it almost seems like it was pre-destined.

Last March, a dear friend of mine ended his life. I was devasted, even though he had made passing comments about just that thing.

At the memorial service, I had a chance to speak with his mother and something she said really struck me: "I always knew this would be how Xxxx left us."

I thought that was a bit strange but the more I talked to her and the more I thought about it, I realized she was right. There are any number of people that you just know that's where they're headed. Jim Morrison, that young lady that just died, a couple of years back? A singer. I can't think of her name. For some reason, life is just to painful/difficult/complicated for them to deal with. They're a very small percentage of the population and one could argue that you are always going to have occasional people that fall outside "the norm". I'm sure we're all pretty familiar with that?

But, no, this case seems to be a case of a child being stalked by an adult and that is never okay and I would fully support any law that actually removes that type of behavior (or the stalkers, themselves, of course) from our society.
