Here in Western New York we're not expected to get the brunt of it but they are still predicting high winds (gusts up to 60mph), downed tress and branches, power outages and flash floods. The coast lines of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie have high wave warnings.

Things are expected to get going around 5pm (local) today so we will probably shut down the office around 3pm. We are about as ready as we can be. My best wishes to those who will have to bear the brunt of things.

ETA:

Let's see here... flashlights, check. Candles, check. Ice for the cooler, check. A good book, check. Jug of wine, check...

Take it out. I had my super come by yesterday and take all my AC's out of the windows. Since I am on the river side, they indeed can be ripped out of the window.

Thanks, my neighbor took it out. I put towels underneath but did not see the massive amount of water that was his lame excuse for not doing it.

I keep extra water routinely. But not a D battery to be found. Have candles though.

You can make water candles out of a cup, a bit of string, water and some vegetable oil. Instructions here, but a bit of string poked into a disk of plastic will do and you obviously don't need the decorations. I used to do this when I was camping and had run out of both torch batteries and standard candles.

Good luck to all out there. This is looking a bit nasty - please take care.

My thoughts are heavily on all of you within the path of this mighty storm.

Please take care and I hope you all make it through, safely!

My concern is not the storm itself but the effect of strong winds on tree limbs and branches that are already damaged by the tornado, Irene and the snow fiasco of last year.
My town was hit by all 3... but the snow was the worst of it in my immediate area.

High winds can turn those things into missiles if there is any breakage.

It seems as though the rain and wind will pretty much be hitting separately so that should minimise uprooting trees.
I have not heard much on tornado risk.

I've spent the weekend taking care of my travelers. I only have two left and they look like they'll be outside of the storm.

I talked to Mom. She has the windows taped, buckets of water to flush the toilet and wash up, bottled water, food that doesn't require cooking (she has an electric stove), ice and the generator has fuel.

Stores by me were only half a day today then they sent employees home. During that time they were moving things to the large freezers and out of the isle freezers. We lost power last time for 9 days. It was a horrible. Me and my apt. manager got into earlier today because I don't understand why it's not mandatory that people removed things from their patio's especially the 3rd floors during this storm. Seems like common sense to me.

I'm grateful to hear the shelters this time are allowing pets in our area, they didn't during the last storm.

I hope you don't lose power, especially for 9 days!
UGH!!!
Thousands have lost power in my area, so far I still have it.
Good luck!!
The storm coverage and damage is really incredible, sea walls crashing in Florida, floods, storm damage, and even blizzards.

There is NOTHING like mother nature!!!

I'm in Georgia, and there's nothing much going on here except it is quite windy today. The skies are looking clear and I've heard it's just gonna be a bit cloudy/windy for a couple days. No classes cancelled for me... but alas, I guess I should be thankful for that ^.^ I wish everyone and their loved ones well. Stay safe~!

As a resident of Louisiana.....My personal thanks to the East Coast for taking this one. I'm still cleaning up from Issac! Us Gulf Coast residents appreciate someone else taking a turn for a little while. In the meantime We also know what you are going through. Prayers and thoughts are with "Yawl"!

I cannot fathom that there are people still out and about on the cams of Times Square, etc. Just so arrogant and blaise to think that is an okay thing to do. I've been reading/watching stuff all day about this storm. Pretty scary stuff.

Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I have winds that sound like my windows will blow off any moment now and I have rain coming in through the windowsill.

Called the super and all he could do was put plastic on the window sills and placed towels rolled up.

I feel fucked and not in a good way.

I hate this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

red, I have been thinking about you near the river in NNJ!!
You are in one of the worse area's.
Do you still have electricity?

I am watching the coverage on tv.
I hope you are in the interior of your dwelling, consider sleeping in the bathroom/bathtub.

Be safe and keep us posted!

My lights are going on and off, I doubt I have electricity too much longer.

Time to make more coffee and prepare for no electricity.

Phone is fully charged and I am ready.

Good luck to everybody dealing with hurricane sandy!
