ORIGINAL: kitkat105 I cannot fathom that there are people still out and about on the cams of Times Square, etc. Just so arrogant and blaise to think that is an okay thing to do. I've been reading/watching stuff all day about this storm. Pretty scary stuff. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. I believe many NY'ers have an inflated sense of themselves in regards to seeing themselves as tough, and being able to handle more than others might. Having been born, and partially raised in NYC, I still see that coming out in myself, from time to time. How much of it is actually true or not, I am not sure. Granted, life in NY, especially in the city, can be challenging, often requires a thick skin, and a willingness to not back down when confronted, if one wants to get anywhere. You know, the old never show fear, and never say die sort of thing. For some, I'm sure it's a protective outer facade, and for others, well, maybe they were just born as mean as junkyard dogs. I think for the majority, it might be more a case of indoctrinated/adopted pride that turns into a portion of our sense of identity, as we all hear from one another (from birth on) how tough we NY'ers are, and we end up taking a near nationalistic pride in waving that flag. That being said, having been born and bred in NYC, as tough as I like to imagine myself at times, I have always known Nature is waaaay bigger and badder than me. I will neither taunt nor disrespect her, as I have no delusions about being invulnerable. It never ceases to amaze me how some people, all over the world, have what seems like no sense at all. Like in the case of hurricanes, tornados, etc., while most sensible folks are preparing for, evacuating potentially dangerous situations and getting as far away as possible, the delusional stand right at the shoreline, or as close as possible to the tornado, and watch it in wonder. What is it that makes some do this? I have no clue. Maybe they've gone through, and survived unscathed, multiple weather situations that were overly hyped up before hand, so they figure warnings are exaggerated, and need not be heeded. I dunno.
