I'm grateful to hear the shelters this time are allowing pets in our area, they didn't during the last storm.

After the mayhem of katrina & animals having to be returned to owners in houston from rescue in oregon (no joke) as well as number put down HSUS jumped down FEMAs throat...change didn't finally get signed until 26th when size of storm path was determined.

The death toll from the storm itself sucks, but what they won't be putting on the news is all the people who die in the next month also because of the storm.
LOL, ok, now for some humor to be injected...
I know there has to be someone out there who's paranoid and wealthy enough to be having the same thoughts I do about building underground or buying up an old bunker in a very stable region and turning it into the underground city of kink when the world ends... how come that guy never hits on me? We'd be perfect together! I'd put up with his insanity and he'd put up with my desire for actual preparedness for anything that's possible to be prepared for. And c'mon, tell me all of you wouldn't consider moving on down and renting space in a city that's built on kink and brains! Anyone with me on this? (OK... now anyone who could actually do this project, 'cause it's going to take me years to save up that capital, and it seems like a project to start sooner than that)
Sorry, thought a little half-serious humor might not hurt here.

For $25000 you too can own a decomissioned missile silo in nebraska!!!
The drawbacks: its nebraska & 80 miles one way to the grocery store

LMAO, point of fact
From my current location it's 50 miles to a grocery store, an extra 30, not such a big deal to me. However, you are awesome for knowing where abandoned missile silos are available for sale and if I ever build my city I will give you slum rates on a penthouse sized place! (PS, once you have a city of your own, you just order supplies in bulk, and make it the company that sells them's issue to deliver to you. And I'm pretty sure half a dozen kinky truckers would deliver on their way home if I gave them a discount too)
Now about that funding... shit, I need to become one of the fetwhores and marry a nice kinky sick old man. I might even be able to live with myself for sleeping with someone I find sad and gross if I can manage to give him a heart attack the first time... win win? SIGH
Anyone who wins the lottery do let me know... lotto tickets are also 50 miles from here so I'm not about to start playing now.

Know truckers that would deliver just for the zoo factor if allowed inside. Most silos have a small farm house or barn to house the elevator equipment & exhaust so no reason to advertise who or what is underground for deliveries.
Silos um yeah know some people that actually own them & have seen really cool abandoned military stuff that came with them. One is a part of the actual launch station...big joke when bad stuff is on news you hear "awww shit, don't make me get the (launch) key"!!!
As for the rest...hey lookie nookie you were looking for a roomie, how about a building full of willing kinksters & you are mayor?? Not the MLM i meant but could be profitable

To nochoice: no idea what he really looks like because I'm assuming he's not actually a baby gorilla.

I lost power for 3 days.
My move was delayed for 2 days.

I was grateful we eat mainly raw fruits and veggies so I didn't loose much of anything due to power being out.

It wasn't as bad here in the Bmore area as they expected it to be.

I can see where so many are freaked out by this storm . Let me just give you a clue from someone who lives this stuff every year or so . First off you all got lucky and just got the edge of the storm . I hope none of you ever have to go through a storm that has the eye pass over you and then get the mess on the other side . Flooding is normal for a storm . You clean up and move on . It is when you come home and not only is you home gone but the entire street is gone . being in a hurracane is bad but what we fear most is not that but the tonadoes that may or may not come with it . You hear the noise but are never sure what it is till it is to late . I have seen hurracanes come in and just flood but after the tornadoes did all the damage . You got some wind damage flooding and a few other things went wrong . You come home and your house is there you wave to your friends and nieghbors and you thank God everyone is safe . Now you wait another 10 years for the next time . Please remember this from June till November the southern states go through this and we have yet to let one bet us down or make us lose heart in our God Country or our friend and neighbors . We are here for you as you where for us . At times we are more than just one country we are an American family and there are millions of us all you have to do is just ask and we are there with hammers nails hot food and cold tea . Be well all .

Anyone else still waiting to get power and heat back?

My town in Northwest NJ (Sussex County) is still mostly without power.  Many of us have landlines that are with our cable systems, so no phones.  That includes cell phones unless you are with one of the big two.  As of now, it is one full week without power, and from what I understand, there are only a couple areas of the town that have electricity back.

My house survived the storm fine, although the cheap, plastic, corrogated roof on my patio is gone.  Well, not gone, just pieces all over the neighbors' yards.

That being said, I was told on Halloween night that we should expect to continue to be without power for at least two weeks.  Of course, we are now expecting a No'easter to hit on Wednesday which will bring the really cold weather with it.

The only reason that I am even able to communicate with the world is because I left for vacation on November 1st, and that was up in the air until I actually left my house, not knowing if my flight out of the US would have been cancelled.  I have been trying to call my friend via Skype since I left (he's watching my cats), and his phone is still out.  I sent some emails to people from our church asking them to check on him and remind him to toss everything in my fridge/freezer that still has no power.

At least half a dozen houses on my street were damaged from fallen trees, one of them having had the entire front torn off.  Same house had the same problem in last year's "freak" Halloween snow storm, the construction permit is still on the door from continuing repairs from that (I think I would have sold and moved).  I live on the lake and there are some people who didn't properly tie up their boats, which are now sitting on the beach.

Guess I picked a good time to go on vacation.  I was going nuts after a couple of days without power, running water and heat.  I lived on the Gulf Coast of Florida from Charlie through Katrina, and the damage from this storm is so much worse than the area I lived then.

The Jersey Shore basically doesn't exist anymore.  The boardwalks, piers and rides are all in the ocean from Point Pleasant all the way to Cape May.  I don't see how they will be able to repair that damage before Memorial Day, which means a huge loss of income for many people in the area who rely on summer tourists for the majority of their income.  I have family in Brick who I only was finally able to reach by phone today and they are also still without power.

If that No'easter hits on Wednesday like predicted, this is going to get so much worse.  When the storm hit, we were having unseasonably warm weather.  The new storm will freeze a lot of the water that has flooded homes.

Me and my family were very lucky to have avoided major damage and are grateful.  My thoughts and prayers are with those who didn't have our luck.

Hi LL,

I know where you are. I've been to Lafayette. I used to live south of you, in Morris County.

I finally got my power back late last night, thank goodness. I'm so sorry to hear about what's going on in your area!

I'm actually south of Lafayette now, just didn't go for the new nic.  I grew up in Morris County.  They are pretty much powered back up now.  So is the northern part of Sussex County.  Hopatcong Borough is just over Morris's border and it seems that Sussex forgets we aren't in Morris County, and Morris is quick to deny us, lol.  So wee end up being like the forgotten town after everyone else is up and running, they finally get to us.

Long Island still has 200,000 without power. Schools are still closed in many areas.

And the noreaster due in Wednesday is now not rain, but sleet up here. Ice storm, just what we don't need.

Most storms come right up the Hudson River, like Irene and Lee last year. Sandy came up Route 17.
