I worry for friends and strangers a like, be safe. I can't imagine what it's like for anyone in the path, some may look at it with "Oh this thing again" but for me, so far from any coast and in a city where natural disasters are uncommon the unknown is scary and I fear for you even if you don't. I've never lost anything to a storm, or feared that one would do damage and it is beyond my scope to understand what standing in a house without power being buffeted by a storm that can, and has, kill is like.

Be safe people, all of you.

Not a joke.

No one was hurt but it's a total write off. I'm away in Virginia at the moment. I can't even go look for myself for a couple of days because there are 400 miles of storm swept roads between here and there.

Exciting!

That is awful, I am sorry for your loss. Everyone I know in NJ has lost power, except for me, thank goodness. Just some water damage and a few scares (6 neighbors in my apartment building had their windows blow in).

It wasn't that much of a loss. The house was just a place. I wasn't even keeping my stuff there. I lost nothing but money, and I had wanted to sell the place anyhow.

I feel sorry for the tenants and the neighbor. It tool 4 firemen to get her out of the house - I've never seen her leave her front porch. Even on the porch she was only ever dressed in a housecoat and slippers. My father is now taking care of her parrot.

Monsoon floods in Pakistan over the last two weeks have killed more than 400 people and affected more than 4.5 million others, the government disaster relief agency has said.

At least 37 died in the capital when the heaviest rains for over six decades inundated it, causing 10bn yuan (£1bn) of damage. Officials said 25 drowned in the city, six were killed in house collapses, one was hit by lightning and five were electrocuted by toppled power lines.

At least 60 people are now known to have died in the torrential rain and floods that paralysed the northern Philippines this week, the country's disaster agency has said.

flash floods that killed at least 171 people in the southern Krasnodar region, the Russian government says.

Since the start of the monsoon in June, the government says more than 1,200 people have died in India alone, with scores of others killed in Bangladesh and neighboring Nepal, where floods have hit low-lying southern parts of the country.

Some 19 million people have been driven from their homes in the two countries in recent days

What was the point of that post?

A simple google search will show that 78% of the United States will be affected by the storm in some way. At least 33 deaths are attributed to Sandy; 8 million people are without power; 80 homes were lost to fire in NY alone.

Everything is relative - everyone, everywhere in the world has their own struggles. Key word: OWN. Being passive aggressive doesn't actually help the people in NYC or Pakistan, now does it?

I'm going to bet that you've never been in a house that was gradually jackhammered to gravel by 165 MPH winds.........

Jersey and NYC took the worst of it. Up here, in the mid Hudson valley we have power outages but that's it. They closed one bridge yesterday for a couple of hours. Nothing like Manhattan which is still totally isolated.

I think what reduced the damage here is that Irene and Lee last year took out every weak tree. Our winds didn't get much above 50 mph and a strong oak can handle that easily.

Still waiting for ferry service to be restored to see if the house on Fire Island made it through. Thankfully we had put all the outdoor furniture away last week so there shouldn't be anything for the wind to propel through the windows.

For Y'all up in the northeast if (God forbid) this happens again.
If you have vinyl outdoor furniture, hyperchlorinate your pool and throw the plastic patio furniture in there before the hurricane comes.

That way, you dont get dirt in the house, the furniture doesn't end up in the next county and it gets clean.

Signed. An old hurricane vet that spent 18 years in miami.

Thanks to everyone who checked in with us NJ peeps.

I have a bit of water damage, but never lost power, which is unusual here.

I hope everyone else is doing well and is safe and sound.

Good to see from those of you who checked in and are OK. Sorry to hear of Malcom's house fire and any other property damage. I hope all others out there who did not check in are ok.
