Why haggle over wording?

Butch

That's what the Founders did, Butch. The crossed 't's' and dotted 'i's' were looked at for substance, definition and value to the whole. The Founders knew that haggling over the words was an important part of the process and they were some pretty savvy cats. Some of that haggling took hours if not days. Some of the haggling of future words added to our Founding documents took years if not decades. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

We are not the Separate States of America so using language which tends towards separate but equal undermines of the very name of our country and doesn't sit right with me.

Because gay couples want their relationships to be treated with dignity and respect, not as a second class relationship

Now if a state was saying they could not be married in a Church of their choice then I would agree but that is not the case.

The legalities under the law are only for property, taxes, and children and if they were the same laws...one called civil and the other marriage it would make no difference...It would not be second class just a different name.

In the Church it would be a marriage... outside it is just a different name for a license…damn get the meat and potatoes first then worry about the gravy.

Otherwise I agree that is would be silly to call the same license and rights by different names to appease another person's sensibilities . But in reality it would it not be better to get the rights then work on the names?

Or be stubborn and get nothing perhaps.

BitaTruble I am all for a federal law that gives equal rights and dignity and if they want to call it a marriage fine with me. But it would also be fine with me if the federal law called it a civil marriage. I am a realists…usually…lol.

But for now we are talking about individual States with different religion and ethnic make ups and goals may have to be different and take time…

Unless the federal government steps in, which they will not do in this political climate, then different words with the same protection may be the way to go for now.

I got this from a friend on Facebook:

I see some more states have legalized same-sex and Marijuana use.

I thought this was unusual for such a conservative, Christian country - but then, I remembered the bible teaches that a man that lays down with another man should be stoned.

I thought it was great!

Peace and comfort,

Michael
