Certainly some of that is occurring now and will continue to do so. You'll regret wishing for such certainly.

We have now entered that area in which I can lock this thread. If I must come back and remove anything else, the thread will be locked. I am sure we all have better things to do.

Thank you

It is going to be tough for either side to make concessions. The split in this country is right down the middle and the politicians know it. Going against what they ran on would be political suicide...So... they will continue on until disaster.

What has happened in the past and will need to happen now and in the future is something that will change the thinking of the American people. Some traumatic event that will show one side or the other to be undeniably correct.

That's already happened:

Congress Approval Ties All-Time Low at 10%

I can understand the Republicans initially pandering to their tea party constituency by being jack asses, but the American people have since loudly voiced their disapproval. It's long past time for Republican concessions.

It has happened in the past...but not this last election. The voters said otherwise....They may be unhappy with congress in general but they did not vote change. That would have taken an overwhelming swing in power one way or the other... That did not happen.

Both sides, and their voters, think their way is the only way and are still blaming the other for obstruction. When the taxes raise and the economy, such as it is collapses, I think there will be a big swing in power in 2014…just not sure which way it will go.

But maybe they will surprise us and come to a compromise agreement.

I think its a lost art Michael. And I'm not just laying that at the feet of the Right... or any particular country...
I sure as hell don't think many of them here in Canada are thoughtful or intelligent and I thought the same when I lived in the UK.
Ignoring social reality is the downfall in the main for this past clusterfuck for the right.

Considering the economic disaster Bush handed Obama, I think he has done okay, but his policies are clearly very middle of the road. He stabilized the status quo, saving banks and wall street is hardly socialism.

I think the rights media organs have polarized the debate in order to facilitate public blindness to the robbery that is going on. Taxes shifted to the middle class, profit taking by banks and wall street, subjugation,of our economy to china by and for the financial classes that would sell us out for a slice of the chinese market, ala wallmart.

The republicans should own the unions and the working middle class but they dont. Their social and econ,ic policies war on both and enough in both groups see through the Fox fog. "Buy American" and "hard work" are trademark Republican slogans but they are both false and hollow.

That part is what I cannot see, as to why anyone supports the corporate GOP, save for the immense amount of political money they provide. Even the small and medium companies are looted by these amoral corporate pirates in so many ways, and they are the ones having the United States in oil wars and such.

While some here have said the GOP should drop the religious reactionaries, the better move would be for the GOP to dump the oligarch and patrone GOP, in spite of their monies they provide.

The original Opposition Party in the US was a party that opposed the Democrats wanting to expand slavery. And yes, more than one were elected. You see, the Republicans had not really formed up yet. But they very much opposed what is called Bleeding Kansas and allowing Kansas into the union as a slave state.

Wasn't the first opposition party the Democratic-Republicans (home to Jefferson and Madison)? They opposed what they saw as the central-government excesses of the Federalists, and they were particularly unenthusiastic about Hamilton and Adams.

The first opposition party in the United States were the Anti-Federalist. BTW...at the time both Jefferson and Madison were Federalists. The Federalist and Anti-Federalist were the Proto-Parties to the two party system that exists today, so America's two party system has been around from the start of The Constitution. (A document born of Potomac River water rights between Maryland and Virginia that finally brought to a head the weaknesses of The Articles of Confederation. )

Jefferson then formed his Republicans in opposition to Adams Federalists (but only AFTER leaving Washington's Cabinet did Jefferson start opposing Federalists and when Washington made it clear he would not run again and after losing to Adams did Jefferson's faction take on the air of a political party) and in short order, ended the Federalists as a National power. (Though many held out in New England.) By the end of James Monroe's tenure everybody that mattered (except for Chief Justice John Marshall) were Republicans and the general consensus by the end of the Era of Good Feeling was that America would stay a one party kinda place.

But the best laid plans as they say....

The Republicans even at their zenith were splitting in two The Democratic Republicans and The National Republicans, though both would claim they were of one party, with Thomas Jefferson as their founder. The Presidential Election of 1824 would be a one Party election in name only and Adams would win but the Jackson factions (now calling themselves simply Democrats) would have the last laugh as they took control of what would forever now be called the Democrat Party. (That's why we have Jefferson/Jackson Dinners fund raisers to this day)

Out of the ashes of the National Republicans arose the Whigs (Standing as the Opposition Party to King Andrew) and though they were never a really a major power in the House or Senate, and though there were other pretenders to their 2nd party, the Whigs nonetheless would hold The Presidency twice.

The Whigs fought and lost on The Compromise of 1850 and never recovered and from their ashes came The Republican Party, who's first President would be Abraham Lincoln. (Lincoln Dinner fund raisers!)

Their would be one note third parties popping up from time to time and The Democrats themselves even split in the 1850's over Slavery but all in all, America works best as a two party system. Mainly as a Third Party almost always mean, a win for the party furthest away from where the Third Party Split. (And example would be Wilson in 1912 thanks to TR or Clinton in 1992, thanks to Ross Perot)

There may be another effective party in the United States some day but that party will be one of two, not one of three.

Be careful what you wish for Owner,a splitting just might remove the fringe elements of the party .
Leaving a much more functional entity ready to once again,in time, contend for the White House.....of course that would all be good for the country,so disregard that "be careful what you wish for crack
