Since the Mayans predicted events after 2012, it would be rational to presume the end of their calendar wasn't meant usher in the end of the world. Doomsday, I suspect has been with us as long as humans have been self aware.

BTW What is the next 'end of the world' date to look out for?

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/23/2012 8:05:11 AM)

Well the Hopi Indians of the southwest have a number of prophecies predicting the end of the world, but no date is given. Many believe that most of the prophecies have come to pass.

But as for now, no new date is given for doomsday.

However, if I get a workable plan to start another ice age, I will let you know.

FR:
I have an image of angry apocalpyse nuts roaming the southwest shooting Mexicans for the next week or so:
"Codex? We don't got no codex. We do't need no stinkin' codex!"
*BANG!*
"Ouch."

More bad news, the asteroid impact thought to be going to happen in 2040 is not going to happen.

Hopi Indians of the southwest have a number of prophecies predicting the end of the world, but no date is given. Many believe that most of the prophecies have come to pass.

I think we have to take the disasters portrayed in "end times" visions as attempts to portray the seriousness of the state of affairs, not as literal descriptions of actual physical events.

The state of affairs that marks the depths of the Kali Yuga is mankinds farthest descent from its highest nature, a time that Krishna foretells will be filled with supreme hardships for people of ideals and values. In Christianity's end-time vision, mankind's fall from grace culminates in apocalyptic war. The end-times mark the perigee of mankind's descent into ignorance and separation. From the Lament of Hermes:

Darkness will be preferred to light, and death will be thought more profitable than life; no one will raise his eyes to heaven; the pious will be deemed insane, the impious wise; the madman will be thought a brave man, and the wicked will be esteemed as good. As for the soul, and the belief that it is immortal by nature, or may hope to attain to immortality, as I have taught you; all this they will mock, and even persuade themselves that it is false.

As with the Hopi prophecies, it looks like some of these too have already come to pass.

Look, Kirata, I am not the antichrist, but I am trying to formulate a plan to start another ice age. And the bugs from Klandathu will not loan me their technology to fling asteroids at planets.

Betcha you dont figure out the book reference.

I know you have a computer, but I figured this particular author was far from your style of read. He was quite political and had a socialist bent.

More of a fascistic militarist bent, I would think.

The overall theme of the book is that social responsibility requires being prepared to make individual sacrifice.,, Heinlein's Terran Federation is a limited democracy, with aspects of a meritocracy in regard to full citizenship, based on voluntarily assuming a responsibility for the common weal.

This state of mind, which subordinates the interests of the ego to the conservation of the community, is really the first premise for every truly human culture...

Suffrage can only be earned by those willing to serve their society by at least two years of volunteer Federal Service - "the franchise is today limited to discharged veterans"

It is necessary that the individual should finally come to realize... that the position of the individual ego is conditioned solely by the interests of the nation as a whole

I always thought the book was long on political theory, but while his idea might sound good, I doubt it would work in practice.

Moonhead -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/24/2012 4:59:19 AM)

I really don't see any leftist bent in that one. What the hell is socialist (even by American standards) about the suggestion that all of the population who haven't served in the military should be helots who can't vote?

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/24/2012 1:54:36 PM)

Heinlein's Terran Federation is a limited democracy, with aspects of a meritocracy in regard to full citizenship, based on voluntarily assuming a responsibility for the common weal. Suffrage can only be earned by those willing to serve their society by at least two years of volunteer Federal Service – "the franchise is today limited to discharged veterans", (ch. XII), instead of, as Heinlein would later note, anyone "...who is 18 years old and has a body temperature near 37 °C"

DomKen -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/24/2012 2:03:47 PM)

It is pretty important to keep in mind that Heinlein doesn't fit into any political label.

He writes approvingly of a fascist state in Starship Troopers
a libertarian state in Moon is a Harsh Mistress
a socialist free sex commune in Stranger in a Strange Land

Several books also express a less than warm regard for western style democracy.

"The world would be in much better shape if I were in charge."

That sounds a lot more like one of Heinlein's political arguments than trying to claim that Starship Troopers is a leftist work, yep.

No, I am a lunatic with delusions of ugliness who would put The Heretic in charge of domestic programs and Kirata in charge of enforcing tax law.
