I cant help but think there are going to be a lot of people looking foolish on the 22nd.

Would they prefer to be right but dead??? [&:] I mean, Doomsday is Doomsday, no one is gonna survive no matter the guns, food stocked up and bunkers..

Actually, the most common non-professional crackpot generated interpretation of the prophecies is that 2/3's of the world's population would die, the survivors would then be responsible for building the fifth world, your basic paradise where everyone gets along and there is no strife.

However, my thought on that is that you cannot build paradise with flawed humans.

The ones that really made out over all this are the people that wrote books on this bs, and all the Doomsday Supply retailers that have been selling stuff to the people that believe this.

I am a prepper but I am not fanatic, I have 2 months worth of supplies in case of something bad happening.

I grew up on a farm, you "prepped" cuz you only went into the city once a month for whatever supplies like flour, etc and in the fall the huge veggie garden had to be harvested and frozen, canned, pickled or otherwise preserved.. we had a huge freezer full of food.. and jars of canned fruit, pickles, and potatoes, etc in the cold room.. why have a garden otherwise? But I dont think of that as prepping in the Doomsday Prepper TV way.. I think of it more as learning a lesson from the little red hen.. [:D]

True, I grew up on a small cattle ranch, same thing.

Between Hollywood and the History Channel, everybody should know by now that according to some, Dec. 21,2012 is the end of the world.

10% of the world wide population believes this to be true.

That's worrying because it means a lot more than 10% of the world's so called educated believe in such crap. I suspect there are billions around the world who have it so difficult to struggle by from day to day that any apocalypse would be a welcome interuption in their daily drudgery.

It would not surprise me however if our civilisation destroyed itself through over consumption and the despoilation of the habitat it depends on but that is not destroying the world, just our civilisation.

To imagine the world works around human belief is the ultimate in human conceit. In the great scheme of things, I doubt humans are either here nor there, they are just another expendable species that if it disappeared, would be replaced by something else in the niche it leaves vacant.

Well, I guess today is the day. Is it supposed to happen later on? I have quite a bit to do at work today, and I'm not sure if I'll get it all done before the close of business. Do you think they could postpone the End of the World? Do they grant extensions?

Moonhead -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/21/2012 5:24:01 AM)

I'm not actually sure I buy the 10% figure. I'm sure a fair chunk of that is going to be people who've followed up on the constant references to this stuff, thought "yeah, right," and dismissed it. You might just as well argue that everybody who's read the Necronomicon believes that it represents an authentic system of pagan magic that predates all of the hermetic and chaos magick stuff it greatly resembles. Some certainly do, but rather more don't, and there's a lot more readers who don't care either way and haven't even tried to summon up the watcher. I suspect that the same objection applies to a lot people who've read Terence Mckenna's ridiculous (and fiddled) attempt to prove the Mayan date for the end of the world using the I Ching and the various "us to" cash ins that have emerged since. Like any other book, it's perfectly possible to read it without believing a word, and the 10% figure seems to be based more on book sales than anything else.

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/21/2012 11:18:56 AM)

Well I have checked all the news sources I can think of, no volcanoes have erupted, no major earthquakes, no alien invasions...

Moonhead -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/21/2012 11:25:50 AM)

It's a pity Terence McKenna's dead. If the twat was still about, he'd be making a fawning apology on tomorrow's news.

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/21/2012 5:07:32 PM)

Well, so far no catastrophes, invasions, or nuclear war....

Could the Mayans been thinking of the Fiscal cliff?

tazzygirl -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/21/2012 5:18:25 PM)

Or the NRA announcement today?

Or the NRA announcement today?

I am waiting for the real extremists at the GOA to make a statement.

tazzygirl -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/21/2012 6:50:38 PM)

Now that will be interesting to see.

Wait, they already did. May wanna google that.

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/21/2012 10:46:18 PM)

It is past midnight CST and nothing has happened.

Think of all those believers who are going to look stupid tomorrow.

Look, as I said, on one of the calender carvings, there is a date for a feast to honor one of the Mayan Kings, and it is still 400 years away, gonna be kinda hard to hold that feast if the world ends.

That must be Santa!
