jlf1961 -> UK apology for India massacre? (2/18/2013 10:15:22 PM)

Should David Cameron apologise for Britain's colonial past in India, particularly the bloodiest moments like the Amritsar massacre?

His chief diplomat here was confronted with the issue after giving a speech in Delhi a couple of months ago, when an elderly man jailed by the British demanded to know when the UK was going to say sorry.
UK apology for India massacre?

Well, the event happened a hundred years ago, what good would an apology do now?

I mean seriously, what good would an apology do for anyone? It rates right up there with people demanding the US to apologize for the slaves brought to the states, the war with Native Americans, or someone demanding that some country apologize for the behavior of Attila the Hun.

Or the British demanding an apology from France for the hundred years war.

The past cannot be changed, what can be determined is the future by the decisions made by the countries today.

so do we get to see the queens head fucking roll off the guillotine?
that would be acceptable for the losses I think.

Seems to me that an apology is not necessary. Clearly the UK disowned responsibility for the massacre.

Nosathro -> RE: UK apology for India massacre? (2/19/2013 12:03:59 AM)

Symbolic as it may be it does show British is taking responsibility as we should for slaverly and the treatment of Native Americans...as to the Huns, it is not sure where they came from...it appears that they may have been a collection of various nomadic tribes.

It was roundly condemned at the time by Churchill and Asquith, the later rightly stated it was one of the worst episodes of our history.

My problem with an apoplogy for times gone by is where do you stop ?

It would seem that not only do you end up with the mayor of Rome apologize for the kidnaping of the Sabine women but Churchill and Asquith have already condemended the incident.

We shall see.

There`s a long history there.

The level of contrition to me shows the level of honesty and backbone of the nations responsible.

For example,it`s near impossible to get the Japanese to admit or acknowledge their atrocities against 1st the Chinese(and other southeast Asian countries they violated),and against the British,Australians and Americans.

the only reason any country would do that shit is if it is too late to sue for damages when its fucking meaningless!

The reason to do this would be to improve relations with India. The nations share many cultural details and have a linked history. The brutality of the colonial era is a major obstacle in their relations.

If it would work, I doubt it would, it could help the UK create the same sort of special relationship they have with the US with India which as India is almost certain to emerge as  dominant force in the next century can only benefit the nation.

Agreed. And additionally, nobody in India or anywhere else would believe the apology was in any way sincere.

Mongolia seems a fair bet. Maybe the Chinese should apologise? Who cares about the beastliness the Yuan dynasty got up to now that China has claimed their former homeland?
That's actually a pretty fair example of why this sort of retroactive apology is a waste of time, in fact...

mnottertail -> RE: UK apology for India massacre? (2/19/2013 12:55:16 PM)

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaas, the Lutherans have never apologized for the decimation of Norway.

jlf1961 -> RE: UK apology for India massacre? (2/19/2013 1:11:10 PM)

Hey it took 600 years, but the Catholics apologized to the Greeks for stabling horses in Greek orthodox churches in the various cities of the Holy Land.

mnottertail -> RE: UK apology for India massacre? (2/19/2013 1:12:43 PM)

Did they ever apologize to the Jews for the auto-da-feys?

BamaD -> RE: UK apology for India massacre? (2/19/2013 1:15:36 PM)

Actually it was the Mogols who came from Mongolia (imagine that).
The Huns came from north of the Black Sea.
Maybe the Arminians should apologize for them.
Who is going to apologize for Vesuvious?

mnottertail -> RE: UK apology for India massacre? (2/19/2013 1:24:30 PM)

The Borgias

Notsweet -> RE: UK apology for India massacre? (2/19/2013 1:30:08 PM)

Has any single apology from a country ever fixed anything? Did the dead resurrect? Did the original sinners do the apologizing? If not....why does anyone give a fuck?

Not to my knowledge, nor have they apologized for all those people burned at the stake for heresy and witchcraft.
