I have no idea what is in the code of other websites. I'm not on any of their programmer teams. I know from personal experience from the websites I've developed that these solutions are not particularly difficult to code.

I do, however, see dramatically less overtly phony users on OkCupid and POF (after they made intimate encounters a paid only feature).

Lol, so you're ignorant, but willing to state your opinions as facts anyway.

I've been a mod of OKC off and on for years. There's a LOT of 419 scam profiles. They are caught more quickly because the mod team there is much larger than the CM Support team.

At this point, it seems to me that the primary reason you can't hook up is because your inflated sense of self is getting in your way.

I just don't see you interacting in good faith here, so I'm off the thread.

Excuse me, are you in the data base?

In other words.... there isnt anything the site can do beyond vetting... and unless you are willing to start paying to use the site, thats not going to happen.

So, utilize your block feature and move on.

I do this for a living so yes, there are many things a site can do to. Keyword flagging, pattern recognition, challenge/response questions, etc.

You did notice there is a verification string, yes? Supposedly to help reduce bots from making accounts.

And, since you do this for a living, you know its not cheap, correct?

How much are you willing to pay?

CAPTCHAS are just the beginning in the process of dealing with this problem.

Please don't attempt to speak authoritatively about a subject you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

X amount of time x hourly rate of programmer = cost of job. I've coded these solutions for other websites in under 2 hours.

Sheesh! I will have you know, I have my own zip code in the data base! *Pounds chest and then struts off*

I know the economy is challenging, but this is no way to obtain a job.

OP: You won't get much sympathy here on the Boards. As you can see, many (most?) of the regulars have the "I got mine, screw you" and/or the "it's not an issue for me, therefore it's not a problem" mindset.

In a nutshell, fake accounts keep this place in business. And yes, it IS a business despite all the claims of volunteer staff. The more accounts the site can claim the more they can charge for all the ads you see.

I was encouraged the other day when several fake accounts appeared (each numerically incremented from the last ie: Mary1, Mary2...Mary29) and then all got removed at once. It almost makes me think someone cares. But then I see another dozen profiles pushing xxxchat.nl and I realize they don't.

About all you can do is block them before they view your profile.

Good luck with it.

~Dave

Handonyourneck, there are people posting on this thread who have met over 200 CM people in real life. I've met maybe half that. This is a big part of why we're finding it hard to take you seriously. Also, your "do it for a living" spiel is a bit much, especially given the non-suggestion you provided. Your stating you're an expert on the internet (something nobody has ever done before) isn't going to sway anyone's opinion, unless you indicate in concrete, non-glib terms, how you would solve a highly nontrivial programming problem.

As we say in CS research, if it were easy, someone would have done it already.

I never purported to be an "expert on the internet". I am a web developer, which is not something anyone would likely brag about and if they do I'd love to meet the people who would be impressed by that fact. I'm also not disputing that Collarme is an effective tool to bring people in this community together. I'm merely offering a suggestion to improve that process. I'm not sure exactly why there would be resistance to that. Surely you don't like the SPAM accounts either, or do you?

Solving this problem without knowing their architecture and seeing their code is impossible. I don't even know what language its coded in.

Seriously. How do you use a site where 95% of the messages and profile views you receive are CLEARLY spam accounts? At the very least they could flag accounts with the SAME URL in every profile description or members that claim to be "native american" and are clearly not.

How much are you willing to pay for people to police all those profiles?

Uh huh.. and yet you already have admitted you dont know about the coding here. And you insist there is more they could do here.

Exactly where do you get your personal experience from in regards to this web site?

How about taking your own advice...... Please don't attempt to speak authoritatively about a subject you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Unless you are on the programming team here, you are not in the "know" about what can or cannot be done with THIS web site.

You should demand that CM return all fees paid by you for membership right away! Didn't pay membership fees, you say? Then I suggest the next best thing...delete and move on with life.

Right...b/c offering suggestions to improve the user experience is completely absurd, right?

Absurd when you pay for nothing, yet expect a mountain of work to be accomplished just to make your life easier. If detecting spam profiles is as simple as you say it is, how about handling your own business instead of bitching about others not doing it for you? You're welcome

SimplyMichael -> RE: Collarme needs to do a better job of policing its userbase (6/13/2013 11:39:51 AM)

The support for spammers by admin is why fetlife is kicking collarmes ass.

As many of said, easy programming fixes could solve a lot of this and the fact they haven't implemented them, speaks volumes.

I think sexyred1 touched on something when she mentioned your profile being a
magnet for scammers/spammers. Most are aware that finding a potential match for
a woman to join an existing relationship is a rather difficult feat, especially if they are
trying to do so via the internet. The accounts that are viewing you are hoping you are
desperate enough to fall for what they offer.
I bet Rubysoho33 doesn't get these types of views/messages, right?

Luckily for you, you are wiser than most, and haven't fallen victim to their shenanigans.
Yes, it is frustrating, and yes, there are many ways in which this site can be improved upon.
But until then, try and find ways in which you can enjoy your free membership here, instead
of turning into a completely negative experience. There truly are some wonderful people here.

I don't see how bringing something to the attention of the memberbase and staff is turning this into a "completely negative experience". gnorance, I guess, is bliss.

I can do one other thing, which is bring it to the attention of the community and the moderators. It's going over like gangbusters. Thanks for the understanding, though.

The fundamental misunderstanding here is the need for manual intervention. I'm not advocating hiring a staff of people to wade through accounts. This can be accomplished through programming.

The foreign scammers often use that phrase... but I don't think it means what they think it means.

In fact I'm sure of it. From the context they obviously thought "Native American" meant anyone born in America. They mention the fact in order to reassure me that they were "reele," that they truly wanted to be my "anything salve," and had "no peenes" between their legs.

Yeah, nice attempt to use my argument against me, but it doesn't quite work that way because you still don't know what you're talking about.

It is also irrelevant to my initial argument that the problem exists and something should be done about it. That is indisputable, unless you like SPAM accounts.

It's really not a "mountain" of work, or at least it has not been in my experience, but hey....who needs facts?

The fundamental misunderstanding here is you thinking that you have some unique grasp of the problem and the ideal solution for it. You don't, but thanks for playing anyway.
