Status: offline 		All other things being equal, I would not mind them voting for a bill impoverishing their staffers, they have seen to that for the rest of our citizenry.

Would you prefer if DOJ had spent a boatload of time, energy, and taxpayer dollars defending a law it considered (accurately as it turned out) to be constitutionally indefensible?

They swear an oath to preserve, protect, and defend that document, they better know more than the teabaggers/independents/conservatives/republicans know about it, because it is pretty obvious they dont know shit.

(a) I did. My colleagues and I trudged home with bags full of work. We'll be toiling at home, since the government building that houses our nonprofit is closed. A travel writer friend got ejected from a national park. Several fellow Washingtonians wondered if they'd get paid in time to make the rent--or ever, for that matter. I couldn't get the research materials I need for a work project because the Smithsonian library that has them was shut. The National Zoo was eerily empty on a gorgeous, perfect-for-zoogoing day. The businesses across the street wondered what will happen to their bottom lines without tourist revenue. Ditto for cabbies. ABC reported that NIH is turning new patients away.

(b) As the old saying goes, there are none so blind as those who will not see.

You mean the repeal bill that was put forward by a Republican Senator, argued for in Congress by the Republican Secretary of Defense, and passed by like 2/3 of the House?

Actually, he ordered the DoJ to continue to enforce it - just not to defend it in court. It ended when the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional.

But regardless of all that - yes, if the GOP wins the Senate and the Presidency in 2016, they'll definitely be able to repeal the ACA if they so wish. I think that it will be hard for them to fight for taking people's health insurance away once this goes into effect, but they could do it. Because we live in a democracy, and that's how democracy works. By voting and accepting the outcome, not by shutting down the government when you can't win the vote.

What would happen to their credibility if the law they've demonized for years now proves a success?

I know that I'm worried. A lot of our customers are federal employees. If they don't get paid, how can they pay me? And I have friends who are federal employees who are worried about paying their rent and buying food this month.

Even if it has a lot of problems, and I'm sure there will be some, it absolutely will provide affordably priced health care for at least a few million people. After 2 years of that, it'll be real hard for Republicans to call for a complete repeal and have all those people lose the insurance/Medicaid they've become used to. They'll be stuck fighting for reforms, rather than a complete repeal.

Lets do the math here, gracie.

Lets use your figure of a few million people. I'll call that 5 million.

1.7 trillion dollars = 1,700,000,000,000 $
divided by 5,000,000
=========================
340,000 $ / person.

So gracie, by your own math - would you rather have your healthcare - or the government give you $340,000 every year.

All the courts that reviewed the law agreed as did every Constitutional scholar I could find who wrote on the subject.

It was the most obviously unconstitutional law since at least the Tenure of Office Act.
