Status: offline 		So there's a correlation between religion and depression, the religious are more likely to become depressed than the non religious. And the more religious one is the more that risk increases.

Status: offline 		I can't help but wonder if religion and depression are two symptoms of a greater mental condition? (I'd say 'illness' is not really correct - being prone to mental processes which have no rational explanation could be a root cause of a lot of erratic behavior. But then I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.)

Having been dragged down a deeply religious path for a few years in my teens, and seen more than a few of the seriously fucked-up people who decide that they are going to try plunging deeply into religion to magically fix all their problems, I'm not surprised by the finding you did share in the OP.

But the authors acknowledge the wide variety of contrasting findings from other researchers in the field, make it difficult to come to a definitive conclusion as yet. The most that can be said with any certainty, they contend, is that if there is a link between religion/spirituality and psychological well-being, it is most probably weak.
