I would bet the Pope, if honest with himself, has had moments of doubt.

Sounds like it.

The pope replies: “Yes, in this quest to seek and find God in all things there is still an area of uncertainty. There must be. If a person says that he met God with total certainty and is not touched by a margin of uncertainty, then this is not good. For me, this is an important key. If one has the answers to all the questions—that is the proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. The great leaders of the people of God, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord, not for our certainties; we must be humble. Uncertainty is in every true discernment that is open to finding confirmation in spiritual consolation.

The problem with the very concept of this thread is that it presupposes that anything outside the boundaries of atheist doctrine is flat out impossible, and also denies various studies, and results, RE non-harmful religion and "religious ecstasy".

Atheist doctrine? What would that be?

No, you're the Rakshasa who is invisibly watching exactly 13.3333333 feet away.

Oh you forget the few noble TURNCOATS, who did not eat human flesh, who sided WITH Hanuman to help Rama regain Sita and later fight against Ugrasena and all other supporters of Ravanna.

ANYBODY can give up eating the flesh of other creatures, hell, even *I* could (at least for several years).

I don't know if religion causes depression or not, but these claims, if verified, are certain to depress numerous Christians:

"American Biblical scholar Joseph Atwill will be appearing before the British public for the first time in London on the 19th of October to present a controversial new discovery: ancient confessions recently uncovered now prove, according to Atwill, that the New Testament was written by first-century Roman aristocrats and that they fabricated the entire story of Jesus Christ. His presentation will be part of a one-day symposium entitled "Covert Messiah" at Conway Hall in Holborn (full details can be found at http://www.covertmessiah.com)."http://uk.prweb.com/releases/2013/10/prweb11201273.htm

For those interested, a brief introduction into the debates around the historicity of Jesus can be found here:

I think religion can cause a lot of fear and guilt within people that can lead to depression. Religions always have a long list of rules to follow, detailing how people are supposed conduct their lives, telling them what (not) to wear, what (not) to eat, what "impure thoughts" they're not supposed to have. That's an awful lot of pressure. (I'm reminded of a funny scene from the movie Heaven Help Us where some teenagers at a Catholic school are lined up waiting to go into Confession.)

I think religion can also create unrealistic expectations in people. People think that "God has a plan for you" and they "expect a miracle" to happen any day now. When it doesn't happen, one feels let down. If one believes that an intelligent entity is actually running things in this universe, then one might very well be disappointed with the results.

In essence, religion tells us that we're living under a dictatorship, with God as some kind of evil tyrant who will send you to a permanent fiery afterlife if you get out of line and fail to worship and love the Almighty no matter what kind of shit happens in this world. There's no escape, no democracy, no protections against cruel and unusual punishment. It would be kind of depressing.

No more than the rules laws and regulations of any society. Like it or not most western judicial systems have their roots in religious doctrine.

That looks pretty damned fascinating, I must say. Perhaps the anarchists were right all long about the purpose of religion being social control, eh? The only problem is, though, that I'd have to feel quite a bit more knowledgeable than I do in order to be able to judge his thesis.

RE that last: I checked the link to the historicity of Jesus - interesting, isn't it, that there's no mention of Jesus by writers of the day who one might expect to mention him?
