That was one of the Big 5, but I know there were other accounts that weren't used as much and only posted on the boards a handful of times. ArPig, his psychosis, and his enablers made the whole place toxic. I emailed Alpha and 21 asking them to please fix the problem and then left for a few months. It's much better now and I also think it's a kinder, gentler place than when I first joined.

There's no question this place requires a strong personality to survive and thrive, but I don't see that as a bad thing.

I think that thread was the turning point for cc. The forums lost a lot of trust and good posters that day.

For that, you're gonna need to give me a blowjob...or the cis female equivalent.

This was not one of those. This one got banned for his own asshattery that had nothing to do with the Canadian lesbian brigade.

That would work, but it would also involve making an effort.
Which is probably exactly the reason why the mods are unlikely to do anything of the sort, especially when it's easier to change one of the member titles, and then pretend that they've achieved something constructive...

I don't think it's fair to blame the mods for the stagnant nature of the site. They're volunteers - anything which takes a significant extra investment of time or money comes down to the site owners.

The mods do a thankless job and get a lot of criticism for it. I'm grateful for them - I sure as hell wouldn't want to do it.

i've been online forever and i've watched oh-so-many forums and hangouts die. some die with a bang, some die with a whimper. some die with a flurry of federal subpoenas (RIP yahoo bondage user rooms). i haven't really fit in anywhere since the 90s zine scene bbs'es died. my mom says this is because i'm special*. what i've learned is that some people just can't find their niche in some communities, and they almost invariably blame it on 1) evil regs, 2) fascist mods and 3) some conspiracy between evil regs and fascist mods.

it really isn't up to a community to try to keep people around. the kinds of changes that might be useful are, in fact, massive coding undertakings and a rethinking of the social networking side of the board and i get that those are (totally understandably) not up for discussion.

i haven't been around long enough to see the mods in action, and i've never complained about a mod in my life (not even the absolute monsters who have disciplined me through the years). in general i'd say that communities thrive more when they are allowed to self-police with minimal interaction from moderators, but sometimes that just isn't possible. boards that tolerate a little bit of trollish behavior seem to be healthier than boards in which the ban-hammer is deployed immediately, but of course there are limits.

so far i'd say this is a pretty decent community and i've already had some good interactions. i'm not sure there is a good way to "retain posters" though, it's mostly a matter of the right kind of person stumbling on the site.

I get a bit narked when the same tired, whiny old voices witter on about 'the clique' driving away new members. Yet I'm looking on the boards and seeing new people joining every day, and even hanging around and joining in.

Being on any internet messageboard requires social skills, a thick skin and an ability to join in. Those who don't hang around lack at least one (but usually more) of those particular traits. In which case, is a messageboard full of sexual deviants, some of whom like to hurt or be hurt, really the right place for such a precious snowflake?

I think of it as e-Darwin in action

ps - welcome to HipPoindexter - I think you're going to fit in just fine

I agree with this for the most part. I have run many a group and I have 4 on FetLife. I tend to be fairly lazy as a mod and allow people to speak as they please as long as it doesn't cross over into abuse.

Unfortunately, the mods have tried that here already and it does not work. There are posters here who simply cannot or will not abide by the simplest of rules. For a very good example of this, pay a visit to Politics and Religion and see the free-for-all it is. I would not touch that clusterfuck of a section with someone else's dick and I do not want the rest of the boards to become like it.

Right now, I think there's a pretty good balance. CollarChat is not a "safe space" but I do think it's generally a decent place for those with the testicular/ovarian fortitude to find a way to fit in. However, as you pointed out, there are some people who simply can't do that, for whatever reason. There's not much point in trying to please everyone, but I like it when threads like this come up because the moderators do actually listen to what we say.

If there is any saving grace about the discussion of new posters sticking around, it's that they'll never have to shift through the Arpig/Fab Four fiasco.

I do have to wonder a bit if the ideas for 'safe zone' forums is going to have the same negative side effect as that lousy "newest local user" thing has on the profile side. If people want new folks to stay, and I agree with RedMagic that it's in the site's best interest particularly when women stay, (don't believe that concept, ask Alt) the idea isn't to stick targets on them. Any person with half a brain cell and a predatory nature is going to figure that one out rather quickly. A 'safe zone' here isn't going to work the same way as it does at an event or a con because there are too many other methods.

I'd also like to ask Chi and Gamma the difference in what the site is considering a minor coding change and a major coding change and how much potential there is to work with? Brainstorming is great but it helps to know what is constructive and what isn't.

True. But as someone else pointed out earlier on the thread, posting on the forums does not necessarily imply consent to be turned into a fetish delivery system for everyone else. Even RACK requires express consent. I don't think we need to or should coddle the poor widdle fee-fees of the speshul snowflakes, but we don't need the Domiguys and Awarenesses of the world being assholes to everyone either. Striking a balance is going to be better for everyone in the long run.
