to some degree that disconnect is "normal", or moreover it's what society teaches and tries to instill in people.

patriotism ? sex ? violence ? religion ? social roles ? those are all things that define social groups and threaten social groups. the last thing the group as a whole wants is individuals questioning group doctrine on any of those subjects. just look what happens when anyone points and laughs at what passes for "the norm" in any social group, like for instance here.

[un]fortunately, humans are quite capable of turning their head off and following, something amply proven by the electric shock experiment.

i call them idiots. some people choose to just avoid them, as another poster suggests. i preffer to piss them off. in between these extremes, your position awaits :)

Suck it up?... I would rather argue "true" "real" sub vs slave ... how words affect others.. anything.. but to see a post that states.. suck it up... makes me want to reach thru screen and smack the shit outta someone and tell them to suck it up.

But then again.. that's just me.... lol <fast reply used.. not ment towards no one person>

The person who used the phrase "suck it up" was not making that statement personally but using it as an example of what someone might say who is convincing someone to take abuse because it's accepted as "part of the lifetyle".  So calm down, dear, smooth your hackles back down.  lol.  It was only a hypothetical statement.

Fantasies about WIITWD not yet expressed in reality and Lust are huge common sense altering drugs.

Still, even though I have made a couple mistakes(not major) I have learned to respect and take in wisdom from those who have walked before me.

The incredibly stupid acts of some people sometimes do work out for them.  And then they pat themselves on the back and think, "Man, I called that one right.  No one believed me, but me."

Of course, it's awfully damn hard to pat oneself on the back from a 55 gallon drum buried in the barn of some guy's property.

Just how much should one be willing to risk for a maybe?

Well of course there is a disconnect, it's called an erection.  To my way of thinking, expecting rational behavior from horny people displays a lack of common sense.

Using fast reply, this is a generic question to anyone.  There was recently a thread on this forum about humility.  And it seemed the overwhelming response was that humility was a good virtue.  So I ask here in this thread, what is the purpose for pointing out another's stupidity?  It is an expression of humility?

Maybe that is my hang up here.  I certainly have eyes that see stupidity.  I just do not understand the need to constantly point it out.

I've done my fair share of stupid and will no doubt continue to do my fair share of stupid. ::chuckles:: I've also had my fair share of mediocre and .. rare flashes of brillance.

It's not necessarily stupid is as stupid does.. it's more, hey, I'm only human so if it's out there to be done, I'm probably going to do it all from stupid to brillant and everything in between.

When asked for advice or an opinion, it would be well if the advisor keeps in mind that the advisee has the perogative to ignore what has been offered.
Sometimes we take it personally when our ''perfect pearls of wisdom'' are rejected.  That only leads to frustration.
All I can do is offer my thoughts; I do not expect anyone to feel obligated to heed them.

Hello Celeste,

I read your post and laughed aloud.

I really don't think I'm going to suddenly be immune to *acts of stupidity*.

History tells me that I'm capable of some *moderate to very* daft things and life throws enough situations and options at me to be fairly sure that I'll chance a few more.

Being stupid is a far cry from doing *stupid things*........anyone with a sprog or two, can work that out.

Pointing out another person's *stupidity* isn't an act of humility, it's an expression of someone's perspective.

The idea of *stupid* is subjective, overall....ie...Allowing my 14 yr old to have beer, here and there, could be viewed as *stupid*. I  suppose you could say that I'm *humble* enough not to disregard any other parent's information about it. I'll bear it in mind and weigh it up , along with all the other factors.

In that case, I can say quite emphatically, that intelligence( academic) means *didly squat* when it comes to  emotional life in all it's disguises. It  seriously just isn't *that* simple*.

I don't think that throwing caution to the wind is a sport exclusive to the kinky.  There are women who are prepared to get so drunk that they lose control of their bodily functions, and are not only incapable of consenting to sex, but also incapable of remembering the next morning whether or not it's taken place.  Some of those same women probably have degrees or are in the process of studying successfully for them.  Ditto the rich, famous, creative people who indulge in various life- and career-destroying drug scenes....not safe, not sane...but nevertheless, it's what some people do/risk.

In other non-kink-related insanity I insist on feeling free to walk home from the train station in my own city...even if it's midnight.  Some people might call that crazy.   I call it not wanting to have to live under a curfew.  My choice.

And....crazy as it may seem, people taking a leap....I can relate to the examples you give of people uprooting their lives for the promise of a new one.  Some people are just more spontaneous than me to start with.  And others may be much like me...they've done the 'being sensible' thing all their lives...and where has it got them?  And this chance of doing something wild and free that touches their dreams comes along....and they take that chance, along with the risk.  Like me walking the streets after dark....they think the freedom to make their own judgements about people and probabilities is important enough to give it a go...just for once.  Maybe?

On the other hand, praps some of them are just smart as an encyclopaedia but thick as an entire shelf of volumes of the Complete Oxford English Dictionary....it's all a matter of personal judgement and sheer blind luck how well some things in life work out...

Laura

As someone who has pretty much checked off all the "stupid BDSM human tricks" boxes I think that common sense doesn't apply here.  If you are sitting on a bus and woman steps up and there are no seats, you stand up and offer her yours.  If you are dominant and a submissive walks in, the obligation to stand is at best murky.  I have struggled with who carries the toy bag, do I have her do it as "service" or do I, as the man, do it?  Is it cheating for me to shove a ball gag in a woman's mouth and stand her in a corner so I can flirt with another?  Am I being an asshole?  Super toppy?  What?

While I am always willing to give the benefit to the doubt to someone who applies common sense to something inappropriate, it doesn't mean that having a solid common sense will allow you to float through the scene as things are often upside down or not what they appear.

It would be interesting if you would post some examples...

To the OP...as a big proponent on common sense..Sometimes one can be too careful in life ..then you watch it pass you by..You can analyze pros and cons til the cows come home but eventually one must say "to heck with common sense, lets see where this goes"...So essentially what it is I am saying is that highly intelligient people still can make mistakes..but sometimes you still need to take a deep breath and jump!..otherwise you may look back and regret that intelligient or so common sense life for the remaining years you may have...be well..Tempting..

Thats just beeing a jerk(the part in red though the entire post screams jerk to me) as for the whole bus thing... If you feel that you should stand and give a seat on the bust to a woman when she comes on then you should do so to ANY woman that comes on a woman is no less a woman or deserving of that seat beause she is a sub nor is  dom more worthy of one (again this is my opnion) then again I do think Im hijakcing here so Ill bring it back to what the OP had tended this to be about.

We are all humans we all do stupid things Dom or sub we are all people and we are all prone to doing stupid things.. You would just hope that common sence would kick in befor doing anything really harmfull or dangerouse. wich unfortunetly it doesnt and we end up with people like erins friend who give it all up and move to be with a Dom that then turns them away.. Which i think is disgusting considering he asked her to move her had her sell all her things he has an obligation to her now and in my eyes cant send her away at least not without helping her get her life back... You cant have someone move to you leaving their life behind and then just wash your hands of them even if it doesnt work out you have an obligation to help that person.

Erin.
You keep saying you are not calling anybody stupid, however the thread's title and your OP make it clear you think these people are being just that.

Guess what? You're right, they are being stupid.

People do incredebly stupid things all the time. It is the only true constant in life....people do dumb shit! They excercise the one true universal right of all human beings, the right to fuck up.

We all do it, hopefully we survive and learn, and damage as few people as possible in the process, but there is no point asking why. People who do stupid shit (and remember, that means all of us) do it for many reasons, but the root reason is rather simple: "It seemed like a good idea at the time".

Why did I start smoking? It seemed like a good idea at the time
Why did the drunk drive home? It seemed ...etc., etc., etc.

Remember common sense isn't.
