Greta, yes, she IS chinese Singaporean and she has said that her husband has never complimented her on anything, even when she gets a promotion or commendation from work.
The first time either of us complimented her (I think it was on her looks and dress one evening) she went bright red and lowered her head and refused to look up for a half hour or so *smile*. She was beautifully groomed and made-up and wear a gold cheong-sam and high heels, so I will leave it to your imagination the impression she made.
As for men, I think I have to agree that those who can't Accept compliments with ease would have no idea how to Give a compliment.

Haha she should dump her husband. Even my x-husband was not that bad. But that is weird, if she is beautiful she should technically receive compliments. I had compliments since a teenager with local men, and I am truly not even above average, I mean, when I compare myself with some really beautiful Singaporean girls.
Because in school, you'd get chase by men non-stop for just being average looking, you get more men because you are average and acceptable looking, because they are intimidated by the really hot looking ones, but the hot looking ones would still have the super confident men after them. Anyway, that was my experience.

I just hope her husband isn't the asshole type who's been tearing her down and telling her she looks terrible no matter how great she looks, that's why she's reacting that way.

Great: I think she IS considering dumping her husband *smile*, not just for the reasons we are talking about but a combination of others too and she wants to start a new life over here if she can figure out a way to do it.. Maybe once she is here, she will learn to accepts and pay compliments too *smile*.
I also agree with you about men being intimidated by beautiful women. I have known gorgeous women complain that they couldn't get a date because the men wouldn't come near the. Weird. I believe in asking any woman I am attracted to. She can only refuse or tell me to perform a physical and sexual impossibility.

And you just nailed her husband in one. she can't do enough around the house. she can't do anything right. she doesn't know how to dress and anyway, he would rather spend time with his brother and male friends than with her........................am I missing something here ?????

Let me clarify--I would specifically steer clear of a man who is stingy with giving compliments, or stingy in any other facet of his behavior.

One who is generous in giving compliments can be a double-edged sword. Not with the men you described, but there are men who are pone to flatter, thinking that women will fall for their b.s. You know, the slick-talking players. Or the gushingly obsequious FemDom-obsessed males who are convinced this is how a sub or slave is supposed to act toward a Domme.

I'd rather get one compliment given with the utmost sincerity than a thousand insincere or half-hearted compliments.

The probable other issue is. Chinese men standard of a beautiful Chinese women differs greatly from the Caucasian eye. It's honestly night and day. She may look beautiful to a Caucasian guy but not good looking to a local guy. It's not uncommon for local guys to be puzzling why certain Caucasians are dating certain females, when they can't see the attraction. It's just different taste. I mean the typical slim, long hair is already the norm. It's the type of facial features.
And some chinese men have low confidence and deliberately choose a woman whom he finds plain looking because it makes him feel more secure, like she won't cuckold him because no other men will be interested in her, and he makes his wife feel that she is really plain and lucky to have him. Could be too.

Why wouldn't men like compliments as much as women?

Because men think differently to women.
Women accept a compliment for what it is.
Men tend to be very suspicious about compliments.

All people like flattery?

Ummm... nope.

quote:

ORIGINAL: sexyred1
Why would they be suspicious?

Because a lot of men just are.

I mean I do understand the old "you are the best I ever had" or "your cock is huge" (and you know it is average), that I get.

But sincere compliments are great, for anyone.

Maybe. But not everyone thinks the same way.

Yes, most healthy people do. If you are suspicious of a compliment, there is something wrong or you lack the ability to be gracious, or you lack self esteem.

He really sounds like the type of chinese guy that married her because he truly thinks she's plain. That's why his behaving that way. She should dump his ass and find someone who appreciates her better.

I got to admit that while I can take compliments on my clothings and shoes and stuffs from females, but if my girlfriend ever told me I was beautiful, i would freak out and ignore it. Probably that's just being homophobic, but I love compliments from men! And would beam and show appreciation over it.

Actually I love compliments from women and I often compliment them.

Do you actually think a woman giving you a compliment means they are hitting on you?

How sad. Women are beautiful and we have lots of things to compliment and empower each other instead of being competitive.

Greta. I have offered her a place to stay here until she can sort out where she wants to be and what she wants to do. As for her husband, he is just a prick with ears who wouldn't know poop from putty until his windows fell out

If they compliment on shoes, clothes, hairstyle, then no. But one of my girlfriends looked star struck at me and said, "OMG, you are gorgeous! You are like glowing today and the tan looks fabulous, you're beautiful!" Now that made me uncomfortable, now if a man says that, I'd be beaming. But I ignored this girlfriend and change the subject. And she laughed, she knows I'm homophobic. I don't even like any woman to physically touch me. If any girlfriend hugs me, I'd stiffen up.

That is different from simply saying, "Hey! I love your dress! Where did you get it?" Or "Hey, cool handbag!!". She could have simply said, "I love your tan!! " That would have sounded better to me. And I'd be able to say, "Yea, Awesome right??!!!" Because I actually do love being tanned, I am a sun person. And just came back from Phuket Thailand hanging out at the beach.

The usual 'compliment' I get is "Gods you look scary. I have seen better heads on flat beer. The doctor must have smacked the wrong end when you were born, or better yet, smacked your mother instead"

Scary I don't know, I mean, I think Steve Austin is hot, so that's how my tastes run.
But you do look like a pretty cool pirate!

I never thought about it but I don't think she is interested in me as a Master. More as a friend and I am content with that

I wouldn't have taken that comment as a come on. I've met a few women that I have said something to that effect to them. Some women just have a natural beauty that it is hard not to remark upon. Now I don't gush on to the point of making them uncomfortable.
